I make my shepherd's pie with a meat, frozen mixed vegetables, and a can of cream of chicken soup. Top with a mashed potato. Cheap and few ingredients for new cooks.
In the UK these names aren't used alternatively. Shepherd's pie is with lamb, whereas cottage pie is made with beef. However, this can be a very versatile dish and you can actually make it with any meat and any veggies that you have.
The french onion soup and apple grilled cheese look amazing! I love apple or pear on sandwiches (particularly with brie although that one isn't as budget friendly unless you find it on sale), and french onion is my favorite soup.
Love to you. You’re an inspiration to me. Even when you may not be excited about what you are teaching.... you maintain the voice of a positive friend or teacher. Glad I found your channel.
I needed fall, yesterday. The only spice I put in Shepard's pie is caraway seeds. Tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce and a little beef stock.. Then frozen peas and carrots. Thin sliced pork chops are good pounded out, with Dijon mustard, a bit of sliced ham, some swiss cheese rolled up. Dip in egg and milk, into bread crumbs and baked. Use toothpicks to hold together. We stock up on pumpkin around Thanksgiving when it's on sale. It's good for dogs within reason. Helps soothe their stomachs and with digestive issues. We have a lot of dogs. 😁
@@rhiahlMT So many things you can make for the pets yourself. Save $$ and know what is going into it. I supplement their regular foods, special diets when they are older or ill, and of course a few treats now and then. ☺️
I love shepherds pie, I usually use lamb mince, but from what I’ve seen, lamb doesn’t seem as popular in the US?- I also put an egg in the topping to make it set a little more, and maybe some bread crumbs and/or grated cheese on top- make the topping a little “rough”/textured so you get crispy bits! I’ll have to try it with a sweet potato filling- I LOVE sweet potato!🤷♀️🥰
If you don't have microwave safe bowls, broil the cheese on the bread on a cookie sheet, then move them to the bowls. Much better than microwaving them.
Everything looked so good! One of my kiddos said they really wanted me to make the pumpkin risotto because it sounded good. She's not wrong 😅 it looks very good
Holy crow! All those dishes look absolutely amazing Maria! Fall is definitely approaching here in northern NJ. Time for cooler weather and comfort food. Thank you for sharing these recipes!
I make my risotto using medium grain Asian rice. We get a super huge bag at our international store at a really good price. We use it for sushi, fried rice, steamed rice, poke bowls, and I make risotto with it.
@ Misty Thompson are you referring to Cal-Rose rice? If so, it's so good and easy to work with; usually used to make sushi rice, it's perfect for risotto and rice pudding because of its starchiness.
I'm from the UK, and you do you of course, cook however you like, but traditionally cottage pie is beef and shepherds pie is lamb ☺️ I prefer cottage pie personally. I've done a dish similar with chicken and broccoli, it's tasty
I bought a couple of ice cube trays with lids that closeup completely. When I have left- over tomato paste from a recipe I store the leftover tomato paste in the ice cube tray by Tbsp in the ice cube trays then cover them & store in the inside fridge freezer.
I would never have thought about using sweet potatoes in shepherd's pie. This is one of my favorite meals. All of your fall recipes look really good. I don't think I will be putting my sweater on, though. I am in Florida. My car temp topped 105 today. I would have died with a sweater on lol. But can't wait to try these recipes. I love comfort food recipes and I often get sweet potatoes from the food pantry that I get food from. I will definitely be trying this one. I have canned ground beef in my pantry, so this will make for a quick dinner. I may share this with my youtube viewers if it is ok. I will make sure to shout you out if I do. I am always careful to not take credit for someone else's recipes. Anytime I reference something that someone else does, I will always send my viewers to the other channel. I M musician as well so I am careful about not taking credit for someone else's work. If this is ok with you, I think my viewers would love this.
We make sweet potato chicken pot pie. I couldn't find the recipe but I think it's from Kraft. The filling is veggies of your choice, I just use frozen, cooked chicken diced and a sauce that's based on cream of chicken soup and poultry seasoning. Can't remember what else. Mashed sweet potatoes on top. Then into the oven. Very similar to what you made.
Traditional Shepherds pie is made with sheep or lamb meat. Cottage pie is made with any other meat. People say shepherds pie because it’s commonly known over cottage pie but most people don’t use lamb or sheep therefore making cottage pie 😊 either way, one of my most favorite dishes and I am going to have to make it with sweet potatoes!!
I absolutely love your channel. I noticed in some of your videos you mention Shaw's. I live in New Jersey and work at an Acme, which is a sister store of Shaw's. Thank you for helping me to get new ideas for feeding my family and feel good about it.
Hi there, new subscriber. I just came across your channel today,👍for this video. I'm not much of a cook & looking for new ideas to make for my family.. I have watched a couple of your videos & I like your energy & style of your videos & also your recipes. Looking fwd to trying to make some of them. Looks delicious! Thx. Have a nice day.
I actually use diced onion for my French onion soup. My kid likes the flavor but not the long stringy texture of sliced onions, so if I dice them, it can be more appealing to people who might have onion-objections.
Love your video.❤ You have such good ideas that are easy and affordable. Your Shepard Pie looks yummy, but I am not a fan of sage. What could I substitute for the sage?
TIP: For any grilled bread in a pan, don't butter the bread! Put butter in the pan to melt and THEN ADD THE BREAD, swirl the bread in the melted butter and then let it sit and brown.
I think I would have mixed up a packet of Knorr chicken gravy and poured over the top of the chicken to keep it moist. The dish looked good, but a little dry.

It's hard to think of fall when it is 112 degrees. Ty for your recipes.
😩😅 I can understand that
@Sally Gordin. I watched a Christmas Romance on the 116° day. Thought the snow could make me think it was cooler LOL

The mashed sweet potatoes bring the shepherds pie up a few notches! Thank you so much for your recipes! 🧡
I’d agree!
I like to roast a butternut squash and then mash with butter and season and top my shepherds pie with it. So yummy 😋
Hard to think of fall when at 4:10 p.m. the temp here is 112 degrees. Maybe in Oct. but not complaining when so many have been flooded.
Oh my! Hopefully some relief soon!
Love that you give work arounds and alternative ingredients. Super helpful.

Yes to the caraway seeds ♥️♥️♥️ and we do the same thing as you with the canned pumpkin with our dogs, it's very good for them.
Sounds delish! Do the same with our pups. Freeze in small molds with banana, PB, or plain yogurt. They 🧡it.

Try poultry seasoning - it has some sage in it but it is not overwhelming.
I just use the basics in mine: garlic, onion, salt and pepper. It's homey and simple.
Just thyme and Rosemary will do! 😀
