This one was initially an experiment into trying out new radio effects using another old time song that fit Alastor's aesthetic and the popular idea that he speaks French. But as the original version of 'La Vie en rose' is one of my favourite pieces of music, I decided to do the full thing justice. Even with the difficulties of singing in French since it isn't a language I speak, it was quite the fun challenge. I chose to base the actual performance as close as I could to Édith Piaf's original vocals and pronunciation, so I hope I did alright!
Sing2Piano's instrumental served as a perfect choice, with the real time recorded performance sounding more genuine than how I could arrange it using my own software. To balance out using another instrumental apart from my own this time, I made sure to add as much detail to the setup of the 'scene' as I could, similar to the cover of 'We'll Meet Again'. The image of Alastor's powers manifesting as he played, only to be briefly interrupted by someone hearing the song and entering to hear him. Who that person is is up to you.

How funny would it be if Alastor pulled something like this for a talent show at the hotel. Charlie suggests he do something and everyone freezes, expecting something horrifying and grim. Only for the entire populace of the hotel to be blindsided by a genuine serenade.

You just sit there, all around you there are corpses of sinners, smell of licor from broken bottles and the smell of tobbaco mixed with the intoxicating smell of blood and cheap perfume that makes your head spin and your nose wrinkle, but is also the only thing keeping you grounded. Telling you that you are not dreaming. You are dead. Well, you DIED, and now you are in hell. In a version you never could have imagined. Is this your eternal sentence? He keeps singing, and you are reminded of the smell of pastries and hot chocolate. The occasional scent of tobbaco and cheap perfume... You have been here before... In another life. In another time...
The song ends with imaginary clapping from an imaginary crowd and his voice once again calls you, breaking the spell at last, although still dizzy. His gloved hand in front of you and a wide, sharp fanged courteous smile which should sicken you to your very core, yet it doesn't. Your features don't look like those of an innocent angel either. Nor remotely human anymore.

I have pretty bad anxiety and I've been have quite a few panic attacks recently, but, when i first heard this song i felt a huge wave of calmness, for the first time in forever. I literally almost fell asleep when i first listened to it. And the fact that its alastor singing it just makes it so much better since hes my favorite comfort character, and i feel like hes singing to me to comfort me. I love this song, but i love alastor even more ❤️

Now this is such pure music, I got goosebumps during the premiere. I love how at the end Alastor just brushes over the fact that he sang a song with so much pure emotions. Oh my, DJ. This is just simply moving. As soon as I saw the title 'La Vie en Rose' my heart skipped a beat. My favorite piece of French music, arranged gorgeously and with your Alastor singing in French? Damn, I got quite excited, ha! I wondered how you would handle the French and all I can say is c'était exquis! Absolutely beautiful, my friend, and executed so well. And Alastor's radio distortions? They fit perfectly. Recordings of Edith Piaf singing this are older and in much less higher fidelity, exactly like Alastor's voice here and I loved how well it was executed!
The sound designs besides the distortion as well were a treat. The footsteps of Alastor approaching the piano, followed by the creaks as he sat down and opened the fallboard sets a great stage. Then while he plays and relaxes more, those wispy and rumbling sounds of his power idly drifting out and surrounding him lend to a great mental image of him being lost in the playing. It all fit just wonderfully.
Characterwise, this song also would certainly be one Alastor knows. He was Creole and would have known French Creole since he was from Louisiana. Further, with how proper he is, it would also make sense that he would master French as well. The song was from 1945 as well and is that 'traditional pop' style that Alastor's based his persona around. Although, the heavily romantic lyrics of the song when applied to Alastor might suggest some things...

Everything about this song has blown me away, from the sound effects to the musical composition, to how clear and concise each word is pronounced, to the accuracy of Alastor’s character-I really could go on for a while. This song somehow always ends up on my recommended when I need it to calm down. I always love listening to this when I'm tired, stressed, or nervous. Helps me calm down, relax, and gather my thoughts. So it means a lot, which does seem kinda silly, a cover of a fictional character singing a random song helps a person like me morw than you'd think. I was just re listening to this and got inspired to draw. Drew a pic of Alastor playing the piano while humming. (In my art style) thank you for the random burst of inspiration! :)
Oh this is just stunning-- just the idea that Alastor could 'tap in' to something he may have done while he was alive (Mimzy saying that if you got a few shots of Rye and the right music playing he'd be 'a kitten') is a fun idea to play with. There've been some great analysis that say, 'absolutely, yes, he's a psychopath by the clinic definition' while also leaving room for the idea that there are people who struggle with psychopathy every day, and that some part of him may be struggling against the behavior that got him sent to hell is honestly my favorite take on his character and this taps into that amazingly well.
Wow your singing is amazing. It makes me feel warm inside and safe. I can just listen to this song in my happy place. Outstanding!
Personally, I don't think of Radiodust when I listen to this cover song. I imagine that the person who finds Alastor is the lamb lady from the comic "A Day in the Afterlife."

The lamb lady finds herself in danger once again, this time captured by a gang of ruffians squatting in an old theater. As she escapes and hides from them, the sound of footsteps echo throughout the building. Then, a piano softly plays. What once was the cacophony of ruffians is now a rather peaceful (and romantic) performance. The lamb lady follows the music, scared yet entranced. She eventually finds the theater's stage. She freezes in place. What greets her is a macabre puppet show. Entrails scatter the walls, the seats, and the stage. Corpses dance like ragdolls on strings, pulled by massive, monstrous shadows. Blood stains the old dusty floor. The lamb lady looks up at the stage to find a piano... and him. The Radio Demon himself. The one who smiles. The gentleman who saved her life.
This inspired a scene in a fic I'm currently writing, so thank you for that. :) This is gorgeous.

when you previewed this on twitter, i listened to it on repeat several times because i just couldn't get enough of how beautiful it was! every song of yours pulls at a different emotional string but this one... i can't even BEGIN to explain. other than getting alastor's voice perfect, i can feel the tenderness and passion that went into this song. there's just so much to love and appreciate about the way you sang this; your voice and the piano accompaniment goes together so incredibly well! singing in a character's voice, on TOP of singing in another language you aren't fluent in (but you could've fooled me) -- it's just one surprise after another with you! i'll say this every time but thanks for blessing us with your skill, you are absolutely spoiling us with your wonderful content!

Since the lyrics are original, Alastor is singing about a man. The end changes from he/him to you (instead of "it's him for me, me for him" it's "it's you for me, me for you") which is original, though I can't help but think it's perfect timing on Paranoid DJ's part to have someone walk in right before. Personally I see him singing to Lucifer. Who else would an evil man fall for than the actual king of heck?
