- In today's video we will discuss about Gulshan Nanda, one of the most popular and busy story writer, novelist and screenwriter of Hindi film in 1960s and 1970s. He was a storyteller who had several super hit films to his credit, and had filmmakers as well as publishers lining up at his door. But the life of this great writer was not like this from the beginning. His childhood was spent in extreme poverty.Gulshan Nanda was born on 28 January 1929 in Quetta, now in Pakistan. His family moved to Delhi several years before independence.
As a teenager, he started working at an eyeglass shop in Ballimaran, Delhi. Seeing his ability to tell stories and imagination, someone advised him to turn to writing. For the first time a publisher named ND Sehgal gave him the opportunity to publish. His novels were being published under the banner of Sehgal Sahab's Ashok Pocket Books. It is said that at that time he used to get 100 or 200 rupees for a book. Then slowly his success started speaking and the amount started increasing. A time came that whatever amount they asked for, they would have got it. Publishers stood with folded hands at his door, vying to sign him.The magic of Gulshan Nanda's writing was raising the heads of both the audience and the readers, but this popularity was not getting respect in the field of literature. Renowned and eminent writers gave the name of pulp literature to the works of Gulshan Nanda and other popular novelists. Although that period was such that the number of people reading this pulp literature was increasing rapidly... The more people liked these writers,His pen made a big splash in films. His name is mentioned in the credit of many hit films as a story writer. The name and credit for which writers like Salim-Javed had to struggle a lot in the seventies, Gulshan Nanda was getting that credit without asking.Gulshan Nanda's association with films was through a South Indian film called Punarjanma. Released in 1963, this Telugu-language film was produced by AV Subbarao, and was based on Gulshan Nanda's novel Patthar Ke Hoth, and became a huge hit in South India. Later its Hindi remake was also done, which we will discuss further.
Gulshan Nanda made his debut in Hindi cinema with the film Phoolon Ki Sejh released in 1964, which was directed by the then well-known director Inder Raj Anand. The film starred Ashok Kumar, Manoj Kumar and Vyjayanthimala in lead roles. The film was based on Gulshan Sahab's novel Darkhe Chirag, and was a hit with the audience. In 1965, a film based on another of his books, Madhavi, was titled 'Kajal'. The film also received a nomination for Best Story at Filmfare. This was a very respectable thing for a new writer in the film industry. The 1966 film Sawan Ki Ghata was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta. The film starred top actors like Manoj Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz, Pran and Jeevan.
Gulshan Nanda Sahib, probably with the consent of the publisher, used to publish only one book in a year. Novelists believe that they used to do this deliberately under a strategy, so that the readers would wait for their next book and their previous book would be completely sold out from the stalls. The 1967 film Pathar Ke Sanam was based on Gulshan Nanda's novel Saanwali Raat. Directed by AA Nadiadwala, the film starred Manoj Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Mumtaz, and Pran. The film was directed by Raja Navathe.
in 1968, the film Neel Kamal starring Raj Kumar, Waheeja Rehman and Manoj Kumar created a stir. In this film, the story of reincarnation and meeting its soul has been shown in a very interesting way. The novel on which the film was based was also named Neelkamal, which was very popular among the readers.1970 film Toyya starring Sanjeev Kumar, Mumtaz, Shatrughan Sinha and Jeetendra. The film was a remake of the 1964 Telugu film Punarjanma. #twitch
