Wooden gutters just sound like the most unnecessarily high maintenance thing ever
An option is to re-cast them in fiberglass and paint. Same look, little maintenance
People frequently become so obsessed with authenticity that they don’t consider the long term implications of neglected maintenance. Imagine not only cleaning your gutters but also having to oil them annually and probably paint them every 2-3 years.
Tom and Charlie Silva. I can not praise them enough.
Ilike the Silva's attention to detail and Tom has a good voice for explaining. The lady's table was very nice!
So good when Tommy and Charlie are working together. Great video, thanks.
Wood gutters??? WTF? These people are insane.
if it works it works.
Why so?
@@1rewd133 hmm, I wonder, now why would wood gutters not be a good choice for people that fall below the 0.1%? It certainly couldn’t be cost and maintenance could it? Nah.
That complex set of roof angles in the back is a ridiculous design. Ice dams waiting to happen in general and bonus bc that valley is over the open ceiling room which, no matter how well insulated, will warm that roof
Oh no.
Super Silvas and the rest of the awesome crew - I never even knew there were wooden gutters these days 😇. The carpenter bees around here would love them.
Wood gutters 😂 at some point you just have to say no
Tommy spent all that time cutting out for the pieces of lead but now he has a gully where water will get trapped and pool up at the mitres.
It will be great when it leaks!😂
I never even heard of wooden gutters.
My first experience with wooden gutters, looks a little labor intensive to me
I think it is truly awesome that her mother got involved to create the perfect outdoor dining table for them
How do you waterproof such wierd roofing lines
Never seen wooden gutters before. Just seems like a bad idea. Heavy and prone to rotting.
Skylight - simple is best. In 5 years that’ll be a mess.
They will be leaking within 10 years...
I couldn't imagine how much it would cost to have Tommy and his brother put a wood gutter on your house .man, they are labor intensive .look real nice but seems like a ton of maintenance. Real neat to see how they are supposed to be installed and didn't know they still made wood gutters
@@Navy1977 pretty sure that's his brother, there is 4 or 5 boys in the family he talks about in the special they did with him
I put a wood gutter on my old house in a historic district. Yes a ton of maintenance unless you lead line it.
@waterchickenwoodworxb… I can’t imagine how crappy your spelling and grammar is.
@@Navy1977haha. Just goes to show that you don’t know much paps.
The best show ever created....
This is smaller?smaller than what a motel?
😂😂😂😂😂
lol at 9:00, the dude casually using the sawzall as a hammer
It’s a very versatile tool 😂
I'm glad others caught it too!
Every tool has a hammer end.
Love this show amazing crew
Great work guys!!
That skylight is worth more than my car…
I was surprised to see Tommy use a corded circular saw, especially on a roof… in current times.
9:00 in.....I didn't know I could use my sawzall as a hammer. Thanks This Old House!
9:00 Did he really just smack the piece with the tip of the sawblade? lol
Timber gutters are not very practical.
Doesn't anyone ever make a mistake on this show?
THAT would make my day! 🤣
Watch at 21:50 - the screw hole is not countersunk and too close to the end of the miter. The screw head wedges the wood apart and splits it.
@@davidstewart1153 I THOUGHT that was gonna happen, and I was just waiting for it, but I guess I missed it. 😊
Tommy spent all that time cutting out for the pics of lead but now he has a gully where water will get trapped and pool up at the corners.
He cut away a thickness equal to the thickness of the lead sheet. The clear silicone doesn't show up all that well on camera, but it wold be filling any other gaps so the bottom surface of the channel is smooth. What is really important for wood gutters is pitch. There will always be a little water trapped in a few places. As long as you have proper pitch and keep them reasonably clean you won't have a large amount of standing water that takes days or weeks to evaporate.
I'm 42 years old I live in Ohio and I've never seen a wooden gutter every system I've seen has been aluminum copper PVC or stainless steel that's really interesting to see
Charlie is a chip off the block well done
@thisoldhouse what will the total square footage be when it's done?
No sealer or glue of any kind under the skylight before install?
Amazing work.. loving this season
What problem does this skylight solve?
Some people have more money than cents!
Dreamy for sure. 😮❤
Why cut open the skylight from outside vs inside?
These homeowners have do much money.
When is TOH back for the spring season??? It’s been a real bummer now that the magazine is no longer printed
Looks like Lexel, that stuff does not behave well outdoors and it is certainly not paintable outside -- it will sag within a year and the paint will detach.
What glue is the lady using to glue the pieces to the table
How is windowpowered?
Question Regarding the Skylight , Say if the Power goes out or The Eletcric Motor FAILS can it Be opened or Closed MANUALLY?????????
Skylight closes automatically with rain detection or power loss. I like Marvin windows but question the longevity of gadgets like this.
This project still confuses me. You took a 1,200 sqf home and attached what looks to be 4,000 sqf. It's an odd look and would have been better to remodel the old home or build something new.
This New House
THO skips steps again. They never addressed the electrical connection to the skylight. It looks so easy. Cut a hole, drill some screws and put down tape. Totally neglected the electrical work.
Making the turtle's head Orange instead of photographically and biologically accurate?!?!
Beautiful table!
Can only watch these slow pokes talk at 2x
Wood gutters 🤦♂️
So cute when Tommy double checks the quality of his own work. As if Tommy is going to make a mistake :D
🎶Not the same with "New" Jingle...... "This Old House Theme" made me want to get in Truck and head to Home Depot
Nice long video. Not those short little 5 min videos.
House gets Power Windows.
Good one!
What powered the skylight?
This "addition" is a monstrosity. I love Tommy, however.
too bad norms kid is not part of this. The electrician is ok, tommy, his brother, his son, rich n his son, n kevin are awesome, everyone else is a joke

My wife said smaller is better too
I know she's just trying to make me feel good
Ba-dum, tssssss
@nufcedkidyup8627 thank you, I perform here every night when my wife's boyfriend is in town
you would think the use of lead would be banned by now
why not just use copper flashing
Lead is usually used in water proofing environments like shower pans, etc
