      Roz t Ragtime is the upgrade resource. It’s what helped birth jazz and blues. Without jazz and blues, we wouldn’t have even half of the music we have, nowadays.

      All popular western music today is descended from the new and exciting foundation that ragtime laid - it was _the_ quintessential music upgrade in US American culture, the USA's very own equivalent to classical music (in terms of its historical effect and legacy), aside from the blues.

    It's too bad more isn't known about Scott Joplin. He was African American in the 1800's writing piano music, and some of my favorite. The Entertainer, The Mapleleaf Rag, etc. etc. All these songs he makes all sound unique and different they are masterpieces of their own right. I'd love to see a movie about his life made like they did for Johnny Cash and Ray Charles.

    Ok something I've noticed is in ragtime, the left hand tends to bounce between a staccato undertone and a chord or playing an octave apart in a short melody. While the right hand plays a chord melody where the accented note isn't always on the downbeat, giving the ragged sound we know and love.

    This ragtime just makes you want to start snapping, tapping, and swinging, a lot of the chords are actually originated from old jazz, which also carries the sane kind of "mood" albeit at a much slower pace and more diminished chords, personally I like ragtime, it's faster, and more fun to play!

    • @SQUAREHEADSAM1912
      @SQUAREHEADSAM1912 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ragtime also has a bue of swing to, not as much as jazz tho

    • @billkelly8222
      @billkelly8222 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, ragtime and jazz are related. But as nationally popular music, it was ragtime that came first, then jazz. The main dates for ragtime are about 1898-1917. Jazz became popular nationally in the US from about 1915 onwards. It was jazz that borrowed from ragtime (and from the blues), more than the other way around. Two things that jazz added that ragtime did not make much use of were (1) blue notes and (2) swing.

    I like Joplin and I have reimagined some of his rags on the synthesiser (he'd probably roll in his grave if he heard them... then again maybe he'd pat me on the back for having the balls to do it). However great your playing is (and you are excellent) the sound isn't as good as it would be played on a beat-up old barroom piano. I recall the great pianist Winifred Atwell detuning a Steinway Grand (YES!!!) so she could give a Honky Tonk concert since her old brown box was not available. Of course, being an expert piano tuner, she re-tuned the Steinway afterwards so the next person to play it would never know.

    Wonderful tune by a pre jazz great.
    But it’s gotta be played alot slower.

      Nope, that's a misconception. Rags were not blazing fast, but they were not usually slow either.

      @@Persun_McPersonsonthen why do a lot of his rags say 72bpm? That’s a slow tempo…

      @@SQUAREHEADSAM1912
      Most rags of his didn't even have metronome markings, they had generic instructions like "tempo di marcia" ("march tempo"), "not too fast", etc. Some of his do indicate that it should be a slow march, which 72 BPM would fall under, but that does not apply to Peacharine.

    What key is it?????

    • @cobalt3142
      @cobalt3142 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It starts in E-flat major, but at the trio it switches to the subdominant A-flat major, where it stays for the remainder of the piece

    • @MrHamthepig
      @MrHamthepig 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly correct except you forgot that in this particular rag, the second section goes to the dominant of B-Flat Major. It modulates back to E-Flat next section and then A-Flat for the Trio.
