i like old tools and appreciate when you share them. I also like to clean up old tired iron and tools to make them usable again. In some ways it's sort of our responsibility to do that. they were used with love and pride somewhere along the line, or at least i like to think so, and it is a waste to throw that, and the good metallurgy they are made of away. Lots of that stuff, even though gimped out and scarred is still better than what you can find on the market today. I know not everyone thinks like that, but i do and it's important to me to pass it on. i also keep good scrap and things like leaf springs, stuff with some good metal in them and make something out of it instead of letting it go to waste. junk tools though go in the scrap heap. a couple of years ago i discovered a way to deal with the scads of screwdrivers i had. made some with good steel into picks and such, and the junk one you can pull the handles off them (it's really easy, i never knew that) and use the handles for files and whatnot. Sort of a redemption for a junk screwdriver with steel that should of been used for nails.

That magnet you received for free is fodder for a video showing how to make a new nut to replace the one Bubba modified. The gear cutting attachment for an Atlas lathe is right up my alley. Great idea and I am looking forward to watching and learning all about it. Thanks.

5:00: I have a number of indicators with that back, Federal and Starrett. It mounts to, among other things, comparator stands (like the Federal 35) with the proper head. Another is in a Federal special diameter gauge (9.025" +/- 0.050"). It allows for rough adjusting the indicator position in a gauging setup while maintaining the axis. 7:30: I'll go through the collection, but it looks familiar. The Miti-Mite trademark (in this product class. It was also trademarked in several other classes. The P&H miti-mite is a truck mount- 10 ton crane) The Miti-mite trademerk went through a number of hands over the years, Enco (earliest I can find, at the original, pre-MSC, Fullerton ave address), Lufkin (later 1950's), and B&S (to current under Tesa) among them, IIRC, and was relabled by a fair number of others, including Ralmike. I have a number of them from several eras, including an ENCO lamp, and a Lufkin lamp and magnifier. Handy as all-get=out

"Miti-Mite" tools were also marketed by other manufacturers, such as Brown&Sharpe, suggesting that these were manufactured by an independent company and supplied to these tool manufacturers who added their own company name ("rebadged"). All of them bore the horseshoe magnet and "Miti-Mite" trademark.

    • @mrpete222
      @mrpete222  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mr. Pete, I found a round stock center finder at a scrap yard in nice condition. It was my first, but certainly not my first machine tool. I have a number that I've found, including 1-2-3 blocks, a step block and a bunch of no name parallels. A friend of mine is a machinist, so I gifted the latter tools to him since he would have more use than I would.

Heck, yeah, I like videos like this. I chose to watch this to see what you thought was a good value and to hear your thoughts about the individual items. Some of the TH-cam guys have ads for burglar alarms, dried algae, and meals in a kit. That puts me off too. You and I are close to the same age but you know more about this subject than I have years left to learn. There's a lot more quality vintage machinist's stuff in the Southern Great Lakes area than in the western Great Plains but I'd guess that box of stuff went for $150 if it was sold as a single lot.

I would have given $140 for that. I have no problem paying a little more for something I want and is tougher to come across. I’d bet the surface gauge is a craftsman that didn’t get branded. The plastic tips makes me lean that way. Enjoyed this video.

Both Federal indicator are sluggish and you already know what to do so I’ll leave it at that. The micrometer is used and off but it’s still a Starrett so again, you know what to do. The Mighty Mag is nice to find and always some use around the shop. The Starrett indicator holders are not my cup of tea ever since finding Noga so, there’s that. The plastic protectors on the surface gauge can be bought for a few dollars per hundred so that won’t help with age identification. If you made me, I’d say it was 80 years old (1940’s) based on the look/color of the steel, the type of screw and the shape and style and the knurled knobs. “ you couldn’t give me that” ha ha, I agree! The Lufkin Miti mite is kind of interesting. I like it because of its compact size but could guess when it was in use. The Union Tool square set looks to be made pretty well and I would certainly take some time to clean it up and then check it’s accuracy. It’s thin size could come in handy. The second adjustable square doesn’t look like a quality piece at all to me. I wouldn’t waste my Evapo rust on it. Knowing what exactly was in the box (as opposed to just seeing a picture), I’d bid $100 easy.
Yes, I appreciate you not taking a cut to sell me a homemade dining room rug and yes I’ve noticed the aggravating situation these days. Thank you for keeping the video on point and taking the time to show and explain what you’re up to.

Always a pleasure. Years ago we did a holiday magic show for the Catepillar company in Peoria. I got to go into the R&D department as we had to retrofit an illusion. The shop area was unbelievable. You could eat off the floor anyplace. I think you have an interesting box of tools that are perfect for day-to-day projects ... and even though they might not be a "top" brand they certainly appear to be quality. Your Union Tool finds interested me because their factory in Orange MA was literally miles from Starrett's factory in Athol, MA so I'm wondering if some of the Starrett folks spun off thinking they could do whatever, better for the right price! Please keep content like this coming!!

    1) $50 box
    2) The Union Tool Company. In 1957, Millers Falls acquired the Union Tool Company, a small firm of about 100 employees located at 48 East River Street in Orange, Massachusetts. Union Tool, in business since 1908, was a manufacturer of gauges, rules, squares and machinists' tools.

      3) Ingersoll Rand acquired Millers Falls Company in 1962. Twenty years later, Ingersoll Rand sold the Millers Fall Company division to the Millers Falls Tool Company, a new firm headquartered in Alpha, New Jersey.
In 2002, Hangzhou's Great Star Industrial Company, Ltd., located in Hangzhou, China, purchased the Millers Falls Tool Company trademark.

I like the “picking” videos, Mr. Pete. Old machinist tools are catnip!

Even though I already have most of what's in the box, I couldn't resist giving around $80 for what you have there. I love me some boxes of old tools. I especially like the Federal indicator with Caterpillar on it. I have several tools made by Union Tool Co., and one of which is that combination square which I think is of very nice quality. I also have one by Starrett which is very similar. I have seen a couple of wooden machinist chests with the Union name on them and always wondered if they were made by the same company that made the tools. The chests appeared to be quite old to me and of very good quality. I like looking through your plunder scores Mr. Pete!

That Federal indicator came from a special tool put together by Cat and available for dealer service departments to use. There were and are many different Cat engineered special tools for working on Cat equipment

I came here to say exactly this. I worked as a mechanic for Case New Holland, John Deere, Agco-Allis, and Gleaner dealers for many years. All of them have dealer only tools that are only available from the factory and sold to dealers only. Occasionally they may not a tool, but they would send a detailed drawing for dealers to make the tools themselves. I was the person at every dealership I worked at to make the tools if we needed them. I would bet that dial indicator came out of a dealer only tool kit. New Holland would ship and charge the dealers for these special tools if they sold a piece of equipment that would require one of these tools even though the dealer didn't order them. These kits were expensive and the owners were never happy when one would show up when they didn't order it. We would have tool rooms with shelves full of these tools that were very seldom and often never used.

Great find. I'd say $50-$60. Most of my tools are used, Ebay finds. There was very little manufacturing in the San Antonio, TX area up to the '80's, so not likely to find gems like these.

The Union Tool brand (Orange, Mass) was picked up by Miller's Falls and produced, at least into late 60's or 70's. There were many "Union" branded tools, and they were not all the same company. The Union Mfg Co has been re-started, and is making some very good quality hand planes and such, all in the
    U.S. of A.!
