I'm 75 and my Dad told me he waded ashore on Utah Beach. I would love to visit it in person.

My Great Grand Uncle died in North Africa,fighting the Germans.The other in the Pacific fighting the Japanese.

I'm just reading D Day Through German Eyes, the first chapter is based on one of the defenders Gefreiter Stefan Heinevez experiences of Utah Beach on June 6th 1944. He describes falling back to a triple bunker position which was wiped out in an air attack. The damage described is similar to the damage seen at the 18:30 mark in your video. Great vid btw.

My dad was here on his 4th invasion. His outfit had lost 700 men in operation Tiger during a practice landing in Britain.

The other issue with the magnetic readings is that the magnetic north pole actually shifts over time. That is why you have to add or subtract a certain number of degrees to convert a compass reading to match a paper map (which is aligned to the geographic north pole). The number of degrees to add or subtract depends on how far east or west you are from the magnetic north pole. Map makers have to periodically update their maps with the new number as the magnetic pole shifts. Most tourists looking at their compass don't realize their compass is pointing to a different North than it would have in WWII.
You’re absolutely correct. I’d love to go into that detail in these videos but I suspect it would only appeal to a smaller audience. I’d love to make some artillery specific videos that go into the technical detail

I have been to Utah and Omaha beaches, and they are truly sacred ground. We must never forget the cost of freedom.
I listened with interest to your comments starting about 27:45. I think that the German soldiers would have understood that it was impossible to resupply all of the weapons systems in place and that they would have been intended to be used until they had exhausted their ammunition.
I think that they would also have realized that their own lives were intended to be used up in the same manner, sacrificing themselves to provide notice of the invasion's time and place, and to give as much time as possible for the armoured divisions to make ready for battle. They well knew that they were "The Crust" and I find it difficult to imagine what they might have thought early on the sixth of June, when they awoke to see the naval armada approaching, with only a few minutes to make their peace with themselves.
Well said Gavin. In reality they actually withdrew from the position after the landing took place. When the allies assaulted the position it had already been vacated

Tell me about it! They used to try and destroy some of the buildings and anti mobility features with explosives after the war. Obviously it just cost too much

Have you ever thought about visiting the remains of fortifications around Cherbourg? or even the Channel Islands?
I once saw a B&W film of American troops using a captured Wespe SPA 105mm gun to bombard Alderney Is.
I was meant to go into Cherbourg but ran out of time. Channel Islands is definitely on my list!

The German 21 Panzer Div counter attacked inbetween sword and juno beach before taking heavy casualties... Wish their was footage of this somewhere.
They did indeed. There is some footage of the 12th SS but not much at all of the 21st
The next time you are going exploring, can I come, it will split the costs, I don't need to be in any video, I just love ww2 history and can't get an enthusiasts to travel with me to these places, liam form the west of Ireland

There's a nice little right hander in tis opening but the day it was a sloppy 9ft swell with choppy seas and most of these young soldiers couldn't swim or they probably never saw a beach . Most horrific for 18 year old soldiers and i say soldiers in the biggest respect

My grandfather killed 31 soldiers on Utah Beach on D-Day. He was captured, and spent the rest of the war in a prison camp in Mississippi.

Utah was the easiest beach landing in Normandy as there was no opposition, most of the 179 deaths were drownings and accidents. Compare this to Omaha which was the worst beach with 777 soldiers killed.
All true, but tell that the men who had to board a landing craft and make the run in to this beach. Bravery beyond measure in my book

At 21:27 don't you think that might be an an A-A with machine gunner i don't think Rommel would make a mistake like this. If it wasn't for enigma i think Rommel would not have lost Africa .and im a Tobruk person you know us rats..
