    Hi Matty ,
    Fiddly bugger to make !
    I have a set of 1/16 letter and number stamps ( i think 1/16 wide and about 1/8 high )
    I'm more than happy to loan them to you if you can use them to do your dials .

      Gday Ian, thanks for the offer mate, I’m still haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet, I have one more dial to make that I know of, it’s a big project this one mate, thanks again, cheers Matty

    That was very tedious work but the result was worth it. Just thinking about the numbering, can a guy acid etch numbers into it, have them made on a vinyl cut out machine? Then use it like a stencil. Excellent job!

      Gday Norris, that’s something well worth thinking about to etch the numbers on, I hadn’t thought of that, thanks for the idea, cheers Matty

    Part looks good, I agree that the graduation lines came out very well. I know you may have already finished the lines and numbering but I remember Patrick from Active Atom was using some special ink/paint designed specifically for lettering and numbering. Can't remember what the name of the stuff was but if you ask Patrick he would know.

    G’day Matty. Good to see you were able to recover the spigot, now that had a bad casting problem. Nice work on the graduations, very tedious and as for the numbers if you’re not sure you’re up for it see a local jeweller. Great results for the stops, would have liked to have seen at least a little bit of the machining, don’t worry about stretching the video series out.

    Hi Matty, Like Gibbsey9, I numbered my sensitive pillar drill table, over 25 years ago, my bum cheeks will never be the same, can't remember the correct setup, but the 3 secrets, I learned are (1) do a practice run on some thing first of the same diameter, (2) the blow with the hammer has to be of a consistent bash if you have to hit it a second time they are not the same....(3) and the most important one, use a SMALL strip of sellotape on the area where you need to place the numeral, this allows you to use your finger to lightly indent the sellotape and realign the workpiece or the stamp to the exact spot, yes it takes longer, but the job comes out as if you had taken it to the Jewelers. You will get a woody if you do it you self.

    Looking good, Matty!
    In his book, Prof. Chaddock wrote that this casting was made of a free-machining cast steel. Clearly there must have been foundry problems, because yours is bronze.
    As Craig pointed out, a rotary table is a mighty handy accessory for a mill. I am blown away with admiration for the work of the professor, who had neither mill nor rotary table, and did all his machining on an old Drummond lathe the same size as the Myford ML7 or the popular Chinese mini-lathes!

    • @MattysWorkshop
      @MattysWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gday Russell, I believe there was trouble with hard spots in the castings and that’s why they are bronze, I’ve seen many photos of the rotating base made for steel round stock which look good as well, when you read the book there’s so much work that goes into setups doing this all on a lathe, I’m being spoilt having the mill that’s for sure, thanks for watching mate, Cheers Matty

    • @chrisstephens6673

      The Prof did have the advantages of training and experience that allowed him to overcome any disadvantages of lack premier grade machinery. There is a Spanish model maker on TH-cam who shows equally well what can be done with the most basic of equipment if one has the aptitude.

    • @russelldold4827
      @russelldold4827 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisstephens6673 Agreed. There will always be those who will build a masterpiece using a hammer, a nail file and a cigarette lighter, and rightly earn our incredulity!
      Prof. Chaddock exercised many inspired design choices in the Quorn T&C grinder to ensure it could be completed with limited machinery. This was appropriate to the level of equipment available in the workshop of the typical model engineer of his day. Matty's lathe, mills, rotary table and other accessories were beyond the wildest dreams of most of those attempting this build 50 years ago.
      All this takes nothing away from Matty's systematic growing of his skills (including videography) by solving each successive problem with what he has available, to the point where he will complete a useful machine while many others have given up or not even made an attempt.

    Matty I agree the little knurled tap wheel is great. Joe is one of my favorites. If you watch his latest video of the mini lathe and the cross slide you will see an excellent way to cut the groves with the mill while it is still in the dividing head. Another great video you have produced for us here in Texas.

    It looks like we are running neck and neck on our Quorn builds. I purchased my casting set 25 years ago and 10 years ago decided I had to finish a minimum of one piece a year or it would never get done. I have been employed as a machinist for 33 years and can say without hesitation that it is a challenging project to build. I'm building mine up in interior Alaska and am curious as to how many finished or in progress Quorn grinders exist on the face of the earth.

    Matty, the new patron saint of patience.
    When i cut my graduations i used a 10thou thick 1" dia slitting saw and a spin indexer. Did all the 10 degree using a bed stop, then all the 5s again with a bed stop and finally all the singles. I figured if i missed any one it wouldn't show as each successive cut was shorter than the mistake it was recutting. I used a saw because i figured if i had to resharpen it the width of the cut would always be the same no matter how deep i went, unlike a tapered cutter.
    With your numbering problem, an adaptation of my stamp guide and stamp modification should work, i wish i had thought of it back then, instead of doing it freehand.😢
    ATB
    c
    Ps, dont buy the cheapest stamps you can get, some of the cheap ones are hot formed and quite blunt, the better ones are ground and form a clearer number. You only need numbers so the extra expense is not so bad. Whatever you go for, see if you can see the end that matters in any picture and judge for yourself. Although good old ones are often better than crap new. Isn't it always so?😉
