    I was managing a cinemaplex near Pittsburgh, PA in 1993, and the public response to it was UNBELIEVABLE. Sold out shows for three weeks in a row, people coming back numerous times, Jurassic Park was THE movie you HAD to see 1993, It was like the Star Wars movies all over again.

      @@howardbalaban7051 I saw this 2018 in a theater when (at least in Finland) they had a screening for the 25th anniversary and I went there with my cousin. Our eyes adapt to CGI so fast. The first brontosaurus doesn't look bad even now, but back when this first came out, it was so state of the art that to our less-sophisticated eyes, it looked downright real. I was thirteen when this came out, and I remember tearing up because it was so overwhelming on the big screen. The t-rex was terrifying, but the brontosaurus was just beautiful and impossible.

      The brachiosaurus looks decent but stands out today because the textures are muddy and the green screen is kinda obvious. The reason the rex still works so well and in many cases looks even better than modern CGI is because of the lengths they went to hide it. It's in very high contrast lighting most of the time and only illuminated by brief flashes of lightning. They constantly switch it in and out with the on-stage animatronic seamlessly (e.g. the animatronic rex staring inside the car, raises its head out of frame, and then the CGI rex steps back into frame and walks toward the other car, followed by the animatronic rex looking into it) whenever they could. It's really brilliant filmmaking. The one time the rex is both consistently lit and fully CGI is when it attacks the herd of gallimimus later, and it's only on screen briefly.

      @@ghostsquirrel8739 I'll never forget the first time I saw it in theaters as a 7 year old. Grant and Ellie's reaction to the brachiosaurus was basically the audience's reaction. It was such a leap forward from any dinosaurs that had ever been seen on screen before, we all might as well have been seeing a real dinosaur in the flesh. Between the visuals and the unbelievable soundtrack, it was the very definition of awe inspiring. I don't know that I've ever had a movie-going experience quite like that again.

  • @TheScaba100

    Fun fact: The seat belt scene on the helicopter actually foreshadows the entire movie. Grant discovers that his seat belt has two identical ends, or more specifically two female ends, and therefore could not be fastened. Grant however found a way to make his seat belt work by tying them together. Then we find out that life on the island also finds a way despite all dinosaurs being female.

    I agree with most of your takes except on alan and ellie being generic, I myself am a Paleo-nerd and have seen many interviews with famous paleontologists of today, and I definitely feel they did a very good job of capturing the essence of paleontologists. Their conflicting feelings on everything and the way they shift between wonder and terror shows they truly do view these creatures as just animals, as any paleontologist would.

      I like that we have characters on every level of the spectrum. We have Hammond, an optimist who sees nothing but the wonder of the park. We have Malcolm, an alarmist who only sees the dangers involved. And then we have Grant and Ellie, who see Jurassic Park as both a dream come true and their most terrifying nightmare. It makes for an interesting on-screen dynamic.

    The fact that Spielberg directed "Jurassic Park" while making "Schindler's List" is a testament to his creativity and genius. He also teamed with one of my favorite composers John Williams once again for the main score which they worked together for the main score for Spielberg's 1975 "Jaws" film. Williams also composed the score for "Star Wars" which is why all 3 movies have a similar unassuming jovial sound despite the thilling and menacing nature of the action. Great reaction ❤

  • @ThatShyGuyMatt
    @ThatShyGuyMatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Some more fun facts:
    1. Some scenes caught actual reactions to the dinosaur animatronics. For example when the woman turns on the power and the raptor scares the crap out of her. That was a legit freak out. They didn't really warn her or tell her it was the scene per say. So that was legit fear in her scream and voice.
    2. The Triceratops scene (sick dino they touched), it was the actor's first time seeing the animatronic. The reactions of them being wowed and even tearful was also real. I can't recall who said it but one person said seeing the Triceraptops made them tear up because it looks so real and so beautiful. They "almost" forget its just a animtronic.
    3. The novel was way different then the movie. And it was also very dark and grim. If the movie were like the book, it would been a hard R rating for sure. And lets just say a lot of people died in horrific ways. Unlike in the movie where all the main people live.
    4. The T-rex roar was made up of a baby elephant's squeal, and alligator's gurgle, and a tiger snarl.
    5. Not really a fact or anything but as much as I love the first movie, I love the second one (Lost World) way more. It just has a bigger scale, is a bit darker...etc. Granted there is a scene that I will just say "gymnast" that is super cringe to watch. If you can get past that scene, its a great movie. But most love the first movie because of the nostalgia. I seen JP when it came out. I was 11 I believe.
    6. Velociraptors in reality are smaller and more like the size of a turkey. So hardly as terrifying. Though still deadly with those claws and teeth. The Utahraptor is actually more to the size of the velociraptors we see in the movie. And of course since JP came out we now know certain dinos like raptors, t-rex...etc may have ad feathers and been a bit more colorful.

    the efffects at the time were amazing. the reason they aged so well is that only i think 5 minutes of it are cgi, the rest is all animatronics which have held up much better. if you really like jeff goldblumes character hes a bigger part in the second movie. also if you are wanting more of the themes of scienc eand evolution ect the most recent one really went into that a lot and the jurrassic world trilogy in general i think covered it more (the latter 3 movies in the jurrassic park series)

  • @flargan6534
    @flargan6534 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The practical effects blended with cgi is what sets the movie apart and let's it stand the test of time, particularly with the t-Rex and raptors. The same can be said about the lord of the rings, and why so many modern movies are so dull looking; more effort used to go into movies out of necessity.

    #2 Hammond shouldn't be the one going to rescue the kids because he's an OLD ASS MAN with a CANE! The hell kind of help is he going to provide?

      Boy, do I agree. In this one, Alan says to the kids "these aren't monsters, they are just animals." But as the movie unfolded and even more in the sequels, it seems (at least to me) that the dinosaurs are expressing a vendetta to destroy the humans. In actually, we humans don't taste that good and the dinos would have free roam of the park and its herds. Animals also tend to go for the smaller prey as bigger prey can seriously injure them - see the incredible pair of fossils, "the fighting dinosaurs" with a velociraptor and a protoceratops, killed and thus preserved in mortal battle, as each is doing serious damage to the other.

    This was still the best of the franchise. I saw it in theaters and it was HUGE. No one had seen effects like that. Still holds up. The sequels do suck but id say watch for a few laughs. The most recent that was just released wasn't quite as horrible as there was a lot of coming full circle after 30 years. John Hammond wasn't a horrible person just one that didn't think thru the consequences of if the genie got out of the bottle ehich was inevitable. His heirs later tho were horrible. I'd think if we ever did bring back dinosaurs it would happen pretty much like this. The dinosaurs did nothing wrong other than acting as nature intended like a lion or tiger if someone were stupid enuf to get too close. But you know soneone woukd try to steal the technology at some point. Greed is in our nature.

Due to size and speed compared to how fragile humans are. It’s wild nothing really bothered them and that’s probably why

    Fun fact your dislike of Hammond and how this is all his fault was the original intent of Michael Crichton. Hammond is a straight greedy ahole in the novel not the bight eyed grandpa who just wants to wow the world. In the book he trips down a hill near the end hurts his ankle and is set upon and devoured by a pack of small of dinos.

      I can see why they make him more likable in the film because 1) capitalism has to be praised in big movies, and we’re supposed to give successful entrepreneurs the “benefit of the doubt”, and 2) it does make for a charming and complex character.
      Though when I got older I realized that the venal and callous jerk was a MUCH more accurate portrayal of people who are filthy rich and want more are in real life.

    John is a good guy at heart. He wants to bring the joy and wonder of dinosaurs to the world. However his urge to bring that joy (that he felt when a kid) does blind him to just how dangerous the idea is. This is why he also fights with the laser since the lawyer and investors only care about money. John just wants it to be cheap so everyone can enjoy it. Again, not an awful person or money hungry, just not someone who thinks things through. Good intentions, no brain power.
    Now me.... if such a park existed and was free, I still wouldn't go. I looooove dinosaurs, but I also know they are powerful and I could never trust a park can contain them as if they are a zoo. I'll just stay safely in my seat at home and watch videos from said park instead.
