I grew up around whites and went to white schools but I never lost my identity. They never had influence over me because I loved my blackness. My parents did something right with me.

It starts with the parents. They should have made sure she spent time around her people. White people are taught from birth that they're better than us. When they find out they're not they can be dangerous.

One thing I can proudly say is I have neverrrrrrr had a thought of wanting to be white or be in the company of white people to feel good about myself. I also never felt the need to date a white woman to be able to love myself, I think it's weird how some of our people think when it comes to white people.

Nah. All skinfolk ain't kinfolk. And it truly depends on your personal life experiences. For me, I know precisely why I intentionally keep my circle small and never based on color. Throughout life, the people who have done me DIRTIEST look exactly like me. So when I get ready to choose who I share time, space, and life with--CHARACTER is the prerequisite, not blackness. Bump that. This right here has been a HARD bought lesson. 😪

I understand somewhat; I was bussed into another neighborhood for high school, but it was another minority neighborhood. Although there were Black people at my school, we were definitely a small minority. I tried to fit in with them but the activities I was drawn to were not the ones most of the Black students participated in. When I got to college, I was far more comfortable with my own because the minority group I was used to was more aligned with the white students. I mixed it up later with other cool minorities, but I could never, ever dream of having to hang out with a group of "them". I tried even as a grown woman with mommy groups and just knew it was not for me.

I grew up very similarly to this young lady as a black woman, but I love being around other black folks, or anyone who on a similar level of culture as myself. But I don’t believe in co-signing to any form of non-sense culture regardless of what color they are and to me that’s a problem with Black Americans. Being around black people all the time isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. You don’t have to be raised around all white people to not feel comfortable around your own. Some in our own community are uncouth and loud and divisive. If you don’t speak like they do or dress like they do then they’re looking at you sideways. Like you’re an outsider. I don’t have time for that. We’re not monolithic so everybody don’t conduct themselves the same way but I’m black at the end of the day. I feel it every time I leave the house.

What made it worse is that my parents sent me to private, predominantly white evangelical Christian schools.
