This interview was recorded just over a week after they played with Alice Cooper in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. I was in high school. I was at the mall two days before the show with a friend and my little brother and of all the crazy things, Axl and Izzy walked right by us. As Axl explains in this interview, at this stage not many people knew who they were, but I sure as hell did. So we turned around and caught up to them and ended up walking around the mall with them, just talking and hanging out. Turns out they had walked to the mall from their hotel, so I offered them a ride back, which they graciously accepted. Izzy had bought a Ramones cassette which he popped into my stereo, and Axl cranked it and I had Axl and Izzy screaming along to Rock and Roll Radio IN MY FUCKING CAR. 😮 We got back to the hotel and Axl invited us up to his room to hang out and he brought in Duff and Steven (Slash was with some girl in the room next door). We hung out for over an hour until I had to leave to pick up my sister. Axl kinda lost it for a while after they became the biggest band in the world, and you hear a lot of negative stories, but THIS is the Axl I remember. The super cool guy in this interview, the one that bumped into a fan in the middle of nowhere, Missouri, and gave that fan a memory to brag about to this day. Thanks, Axl. That was pretty damn awesome of you.

Usually this is the attitude towards guns n roses from iron maiden fans as is the spat between both the bands. There was nobody more genuine from 1987 on than guns n roses. And thank God they've gotten so big as word of mouth is still bringing more and more youngsters into the rock community as rock is a dying breed. So were thankful for guns n roses and laugh at bands like iron maiden that make songs about swords and knights and things that have nothing to do with living life and that nobody can even relate too while Bruce dickenson wears spandex all through the 80s and guns n roses didnt.

The interviewer sounds so nervous at first, but he directs this whole interview masterfully. Especially when you consider how difficult Axl was reputed to be back in the 80s. Great, informative interview.
Axl Rose is one misunderstood dude. Yes, he's mellowed out a lot in his later years and yes I believe people's accounts that he was often hard to work with. But this is someone who truly cared (and still cares) about his craft and wasn't doing it just for the money but doing it to change the world. And listen to him here... This is an insightful and intelligent guy. In the early 90s, he got incredibly famous, and people treated him like a god. He wouldn't be able to ever just go to the beach, or the shops. He was a prisoner in his own success. Different people handle that situation differently. I sure know I would have struggled with it. I'm glad he came out the other side in one piece. Not all of his new music is my cup of tea. But damn I'm glad he's still here making it!

I love this because back then Appetite wasn't super famous , even Axl said it was between 50 and 60 on the charts , little did he know MTV would pass it, everybody would go crazy and eventually it would become the best selling debut album of all time, which still is to date. It was simply a masterpiece and even though Adler and Izzy are no longer in the picture , I'm grateful they're still touring and hopefully I'll see them this year🙏
Yes! I was 7 years old, he was 25, and that's what I wanted to grow up to be. I didn't, but he's a big part of me. His influence on me can't be overstated. I'll always be thankful. I was in elementary school and I had no idea they were one of the biggest bands in the world. I was isolated. They were just mine. I'll always cherish that because I'll never have that again!
And the kids nowadays have no idea what it was like. Waiting for the music store to open to get the new album. What these guys really meant to young people. Music just sucks anymore.

That's how great bands were created in the 70s and 80s. That's why there's no musicians like Slash or Axl anymore. @@sevgiycl_ it's interesting to think about the concept of looking up to GnR. People certainly do today. But when I was a kid, most of the news about them was extremely critical. Axl was a magnet for controversy and there were so many complaints at the time for how bad of a role model he was. If Mom and Dad America were mad at anyone in the late 80s/early 90s, it was Axl Rose! Perhaps the Death knell of their heyday was the public feud they had with Nirvana. I'm glad they're a band you can get into. I often wonder if these older bands are at all appealing to teens today.

Its amazing how focused he was (is). Listening 30+ years later, you can feel like if he somehow premeditated everything (until 1993 at least). He knew he was gonna make it no matter what.
I believe he premeditated all the way to 93 the day week after izzy left and then all the way to 2016 by the six month mark of izzys departure. Maybe he didn't expect the gap to last quite that long, but I could believe that axl saw the response of the rolling stones comeback tour. The money involved with something like that Accompanied by the fact that without izzy nothing worth a fuck was getting writ the band would have dried up. all of them would be has been slash would likely be deceased. Axl called all the shots at the right time.
Appetite was such an awesome album! I was about 11/12 when it came out an I thought I was the coolest thing because I got it before my older brother did! 😂 I’ll never forget the first time I heard Welcome To The Jungle which was also the first time I saw the video. I remember just sitting there staring at the television and realizing this was something different! I think Guns N’ Roses for me was similar to what Nirvana was for so many others. Axl has been misunderstood for decades. He’s so much more intelligent than people have ever given him credit for. Obviously his temper has gotten the best of him at times, but hey people are complicated.
This is a great interview. Axl is way more chilled than I expected, and he knows his stuff. I just wish he talked like this more often. Appetite was 1 different album, for the time, when rock and metal were slowly falling out of favour, they lit a rocket.

I know Axl has a rep for being super high maintenance that is pretty well deserved but he comes off really down to earth here. Very confident but is humble enough to know that he's still learning and is just taking it all in.

As a die die hard singer(muscician/fan -historian) of Axl since I was 14 in 1991 until now I can’t believe I finally found this monumental great EARLY interview by accident. I just subscribed. You rock dude. I wish I had you’re job. I seen GnR open for Alice Cooper at the Gardens in Louisville KY. I had no idea who GnR was at the time. I'M a big Alice Cooper fan.... So when I seen GnR, I was Fu#k n amazed they KICKED ASS!
I saw GnR open for Iron Maiden on the seventh son tour, Rough rider stadum, Ottawa Canada, back in 1988. GnR were supporting their first album Appetite for Destruction. They weren't even known that well at that time. I knew them. I had already bought their album, but you could tell that Maiden fans werent appreciating them at all. GnR were getting pretty pissed because people werent reacting
What drove him so crazy? He went off the deep end for years. The Chinese Democracy years were terrible for him. How did he get so crazy? Either way I'm glad he's back to making music with the band now. I wish it was the original GNR though
Such a shame they couldn't stay together back then and came out with a few more albums imagine if we had a 96 release and then maybe a '98/ '99 release, basically slash's snake pit and Chinese democracy together with a little juju hounds and you got the next gnr album that never was.

It was early in the process of GnR becoming the biggest band in the world between late 1988 up to 1993 - Axl , eventually, would be misquoted a lot in interviews, which is why he most likely was a lot less accessible after this interview.
I don`t know if you`re a true archival of tapes,cassettes,etc.,but I`ve been looking for someone to at least point me in a direction to get my hands on an interview/special from early May of `93 when there was a weekly FM national radio(Saturday night for me,here in Maine)show called Pirate Radio and at the time it was hosted by Lonn Friend(RIP mag.,Headbanger`s Ball,etc.)and it was a 3 hr. sit-down,call-in show with KISS celebrating the release of Alive III....I taped the show and somehow lost one of the tapes and I`ve been looking for a copy of this show for the last 25 yrs..........Do you have any idea of how I could finally reunite myself with the missing"footage"? And do you even remember this special? Thanx for letting me waste your time...........

I don't know if "advice" is the correct term, but he definitely sounds like a hypocrite railing against pretentiousness in this early interview. The UYI album/tour and how he carried himself in general going forward became the embodiment of pretentiousness.
But he kind of ended up softening the loud guitars for the Illusions. Anyway, this is the lucidest Axl I've ever listened to. Maybe partly because he was still on his way to the top.

So were thankful for guns n roses and laugh at bands like iron maiden that make songs about swords and knights and things that have nothing to do with living life and that nobody can even relate too while Bruce dickenson wears spandex all through the 80s and guns n roses didnt.

Axl wouldn't show up to half the shows, and when he did show up he would sing off time , off key, forget words, tell the crowd to shut the fuck up , and then act like a spoiled kid and walk out in the middle of a song

The interviewer sounds so nervous at first, but he directs this whole interview masterfully. Especially when you consider how difficult Axl was reputed to be back in the 80s. Great, informative interview.
Axl Rose is one misunderstood dude. Yes, he's mellowed out a lot in his later years and yes I believe people's accounts that he was often hard to work with. But this is someone who truly cared (and still cares) about his craft and wasn't doing it just for the money but doing it to change the world. And listen to him here... This is an insightful and intelligent guy. In the early 90s, he got incredibly famous, and people treated him like a god. He wouldn't be able to ever just go to the beach, or the shops. He was a prisoner in his own success. Different people handle that situation differently. I sure know I would have struggled with it. I'm glad he came out the other side in one piece. Not all of his new music is my cup of tea. But damn I'm glad he's still here making it!

I love this because back then Appetite wasn't super famous , even Axl said it was between 50 and 60 on the charts , little did he know MTV would pass it, everybody would go crazy and eventually it would become the best selling debut album of all time, which still is to date. It was simply a masterpiece and even though Adler and Izzy are no longer in the picture , I'm grateful they're still touring and hopefully I'll see them this year🙏

Yes! I was 7 years old, he was 25, and that's what I wanted to grow up to be. I didn't, but he's a big part of me. His influence on me can't be overstated. I'll always be thankful. I was in elementary school and I had no idea they were one of the biggest bands in the world. I was isolated. They were just mine. I'll always cherish that because I'll never have that again!
And the kids nowadays have no idea what it was like. Waiting for the music store to open to get the new album. What these guys really meant to young people. Music just sucks anymore.

That's how great bands were created in the 70s and 80s. That's why there's no musicians like Slash or Axl anymore. Today, record companies just pick good-looking people and autotune the shit out of them.
@@sevgiycl_ it's interesting to think about the concept of looking up to GnR. People certainly do today. But when I was a kid, most of the news about them was extremely critical. Axl was a magnet for controversy and there were so many complaints at the time for how bad of a role model he was. If Mom and Dad America were mad at anyone in the late 80s/early 90s, it was Axl Rose! Perhaps the Death knell of their heyday was the public feud they had with Nirvana. I'm glad they're a band you can get into. I often wonder if these older bands are at all appealing to teens today.

Listening 30+ years later, you can feel like if he somehow premeditated everything (until 1993 at least).
He knew he was gonna make it no matter what.
I believe he premeditated all the way to 93 the day week after izzy left and then all the way to 2016 by the six month mark of izzys departure. Maybe he didn't expect the gap to last quite that long, but I could believe that axl saw the response of the rolling stones comeback tour. The money involved with something like that Accompanied by the fact that without izzy nothing worth a fuck was getting writ the band would have dried up. all of them would be has been slash would likely be deceased. Axl called all the shots at the right time.
Appetite was such an awesome album! I was about 11/12 when it came out an I thought I was the coolest thing because I got it before my older brother did! 😂
I’ll never forget the first time I heard Welcome To The Jungle which was also the first time I saw the video. I remember just sitting there staring at the television and realizing this was something different!
I think Guns N’ Roses for me was similar to what Nirvana was for so many others.
Axl has been misunderstood for decades. He’s so much more intelligent than people have ever given him credit for. Obviously his temper has gotten the best of him at times, but hey people are complicated.

This is a great interview. Axl is way more chilled than I expected, and he knows his stuff. I just wish he talked like this more often. Appetite was 1 different album, for the time, when rock and metal were slowly falling out of favour, they lit a rocket.

As a die die hard singer(muscician/fan -historian) of Axl since I was 14 in 1991 until now I can’t believe I finally found this monumental great EARLY interview by accident. I just subscribed. You rock dude. I wish I had you’re job. Im in film school yeah at this age but everyone says I look about 28 anyway so lol I plan to make a film about Guns N’ Roses and this is a very one of many very reliable sources because there is so much funny books out there I literally have a bookshelf full of hardcover mostly signed Autobio rock biographies including/, DUFF, and Steve and now there’s book there’s never been a well documented fuck about axle I took from the reliable sources such as Rolling Stone which I still have in plastic and make addition the one axle was on a 1992 having this tape would well is so awesome I’m glad you have it and you had that job at the time I’m sure you could die happy man I know I would the dirt movie about Mötley Crüe I was like Courtney loves said I’m not a big fan of was silly just too silly and humor was stupid and I thought it didn’t capture that time unlike that time unlike what Tommy Lee and Nikki said and as much as I respect them they are two bozos compared to the intelligence of W Ask For rachel she was so ahead of his time discovering bands like Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, faith no more or at least bringing them to the main stream and Making people that were into guns say all right I guess Skid Row is cool lol. I saw GnR open for Iron Maiden on the seventh son tour, Rough rider stadum, Ottawa Canada, back in 1988. GnR were supporting their first album Appetite for Destruction. They weren't even known that well at that time. I knew them. I had already bought their album, but you could tell that Maiden fans werent appreciating them at all. GnR were getting pretty pissed because people werent reacting

Nope. Appetite took a long time to catch on. Sweet Child is what put them over the top.

It was early in the process of GnR becoming the biggest band in the world between late 1988 up to 1993 - Axl , eventually, would be misquoted a lot in interviews, which is why he most likely was a lot less accessible after this interview.

I don`t know if you`re a true archival of tapes,cassettes,etc.,but I`ve been looking for someone to at least point me in a direction to get my hands on an interview/special from early May of `93 when there was a weekly FM national radio(Saturday night for me,here in Maine)show called Pirate Radio and at the time it was hosted by Lonn Friend(RIP mag.,Headbanger`s Ball,etc.)and it was a 3 hr. sit-down,call-in show with KISS celebrating the release of Alive III....I taped the show and somehow lost one of the tapes and I`ve been looking for a copy of this show for the last 25 yrs..........Do you have any idea of how I could finally reunite myself with the missing"footage"? And do you even remember this special? Thanx for letting me waste your time...........

Very meticulous like you an interview would be you know like John cougar and ask for both being from Indiana no I thought that was ironic no one cares no one none of my friends like John cougar but I always wonder what Ask For thought of John cougar for many many years that’s how much of a hassle free Guy am. I don't know if "advice" is the correct term, but he definitely sounds like a hypocrite railing against pretentiousness in this early interview. The UYI album/tour and how he carried himself in general going forward became the embodiment of pretentiousness.
But he kind of ended up softening the loud guitars for the Illusions. Anyway, this is the lucidest Axl I've ever listened to. Maybe partly because he was still on his way to the top.
