Appreciate you tackling this song! This is such a great song that goes unrecognized. I’m embarrassed to say it was my theme song as a teenager growing up in the 80’s but, I survived and life is now good . Paul Westerburg did such a great job of encapsulating rejection with his lyrics, vocals, guitar, and volcanic emotion. A rare stripped down song but one of my favorites!
More Replacements!! Alex Chilton is another big one that uses open A, as well as Left of the Dial. I believe Waitress In the Sky does as well but I could be wrong
Hi Adrian! Thanks for doing another lesson on the Replacements! Paul used open A on Left of the Dial as well as Alex Chilton. Very unusual and I’m not sure of any other rock songs using this tuning. Thanks again!
I'd also add, this helps justify keeping a guitar in open G for playing When My Baby's Beside Me (Big Star) -- which I would LOVE to see you do a lesson on, as I struggle with hearing the notes in the wah part of the solo. *Hint hint*
I saw this band in Mpls. Jammed with Paul at some keg parties in the day. Then bam there he is at the Cabooze in the Replacements. There were other bands there The Crash Street Kids & Beat the Clock. Great rocking times.
I have never heard the original song, but watching the riffs available from open A is really fantastic. Thank you for your clear and incredibly useful instructions. I'll be trying these riffs immediately and incorporating them in my playing.
Thanks! One of my favorites, not just a Replacements favorite. I've been able to sort of approximate it in standard tuning but really not that close. This is perfect.
“If you need help… If you need help… If you need help….” Yes, this was very helpful. Figuring out how to play this song is an accomplishment second only to having written it. I always assumed it was two guitars double tracked.
This sounds great! Even though this was from 'Let it Be', Westerberg started to use open tunings more and more on 'Tim'. Supposedly, he found it easier when he had to play both rhythm and lead parts on songs live, as Bob sadly started to drift away from the band.
If you look up the Westerberg interview that was sponsored by Miller Beer - called something like ‘The Craft’ - he talks about writing and tuning a bit - I saw it here on TH-cam a few years ago
I was recently listening to Let It Be again. Such a great album. Makes you wonder how the Replacements were one of the biggest bands in the world in the 80s. I guess they were just a little too genuine and weird.
Fantastic! I tried learning it in standard tuning, with the Bsus4 > B > B6 thing up at the 7th fret, a real mess! ... Say, Adrian, if you take requests here, can I propose a few? (OK way more than a few but no one else is approaching this type of music!) Replacements - "Color Me Impressed"; Wire - "A Question of Degree"; Public Image Ltd. - "Annalisa"; Killing Joke - "Pssyche"; Echo & The Bunnymen - "A Promise" / "The Puppet" / "Back of Love"; Buzzcocks - "Love You More" / "Ever Fallen in Love?" / "Promises"; Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - "Thirsty Dog"; Suede - "Animal Nitrate" / "The Drowners" / "Metal Mickey"; Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians - "Egyptian Cream" / "The Cars She Used To Drive"; Brian Eno - "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More"; Oingo Boingo - "Dead Man's Party" / "No One Lives Forever".
Man, Westerberg threw a lot of people off when he used open A tuning. For the longest time I had no idea what he was doing and it took ages for me to realize he was doing that. Alex Chilton is in open A.....or is it open C? Jeez, can't remember now but it's one of them
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! Best demo of song ever! I struggled with figuring this song out for years and just gave up. Thank you so much!

Answering Machine and Unsatisfied both on the same album...dang!!!
This, and Hüsker Dü's Celebrated Summer, are the songs of my formative years. Thank you!`
Same here…. Bob Mould was amazing guitar player within the context of that three piece sonic band

Dude! You always pick the best tracks. Such a blast of raw emotion.
This is just one reason why Adrian is the best guitar teacher!
I love this song, thank you Adrian!!! This is why I support him on patreon and you should too.
Hi Adrian! Thanks for doing another lesson on the Replacements! Paul used open A on Left of the Dial as well as Alex Chilton. Very unusual and I’m not sure of any other rock songs using this tuning. Thanks again!
jungle love by Steve Miller Band is in open A.
Nice! I’m a huge Replacements fan and you played this really well.
Your play through was excellent! What a fantastic song and lesson!
Well done Adrian. I have been listening to The Replacements and this song since the mid 1980s. I think you nailed it.
Thank you, Adrian!!! Best Replacements album ever, and as always, stellar work on your part dissecting and reassembling a fantastic track! ❤
I'd also add, this helps justify keeping a guitar in open G for playing When My Baby's Beside Me (Big Star) -- which I would LOVE to see you do a lesson on, as I struggle with hearing the notes in the wah part of the solo. *Hint hint*
@@CelesteSheetsYes! I would also love to see Adrian take on Back of a Car.
This is is fantastic. So much for my weekend plans.
I've always tried to figure this out. Thank you for doing so.
Westerberg loves his open tunings

Thank you!! Fantastic choice...I saw the Mats on tour in support of this album in April 1985!
This tutorial is worth more to me than a year of patreon support. Thanks!
Thanks for this! This is from my favorite Replacements album!

Thank you so much for figuring this one out! I think you've nailed it perfectly!
Great choice of song yet again!
Love your channel Adrian.
The most accurate version on You Tube. You nailed the feel.
You're a ledge for doing this lesson
Well done sir. Sounds great!
Oh man, I love this song. Part of the soundtrack of my 20s.
Omg! I was hoping you would do this song 😊
YES! Another great choice from a great Adrian ...
I love this song, thank you for what you do
Oh god I could cry
I can’t wait to watch this. Great jam.✌️
I'm not really familiar with the song, but I'm loving those altered power chords. Thanks so much Adrian!
Great video as usual brother
Paul uses open A for "Alex Chilton" and "Left of the Dial"... probably many others as well.
Great choice to add to your portfolio!
So so good… thanks!!
Well done! There's also a great Westerberg live solo version from a ’93 Whiskey a Go-Go show, the b-side of "World Class Fad" from 14 Songs
Cheers Adrian!👏

Oh yeah and the live at KFOG video here on yt - my ears were ringing from playing it so loud in the car
great lesson and song! "Alex Chilton" is in open A, too.
Nice choice!
Great song.
The song Alex Chilton comes to mind with this tuning, Left of the Dial too I think. A lesson on either would be great!
holy shit i luv u, one of my favorite songs by my favorite band
O my god great song!
Used open A on Alex Chilton pleased to meet me album
I love you man
That's really great. Most of their stuff requires a fair amount of inebriation to pull off. Or so I've heard. :P
Left of the Dial, Little Mascara, and Alex Chilton are all in open A. Plenty more, I'm sure

fucking amazing job....
Other notable Open A songs by the Mats; Alex Chilton and Left of the Dial.
Yes!
Open A is the only way to get Left of the Dial to sound right for me.
I'm from Minneapolis, and I need to know how to play Sixteen Blue!
Pretty sure Paul played it in open A
Nice Nice Nice! Can you please do a tutorial of Horrorshow by Scars PLEEEAAASEE!!!
Hey Adrian, would you ever consider covering anything by Television Personalities? Not too many covers on TH-cam of them
Man, Westerberg threw a lot of people off when he used open A tuning. For the longest time I had no idea what he was doing and it took ages for me to realize he was doing that. Alex Chilton is in open A.....or is it open C? Jeez, can't remember now but it's one of them
WOO
🎵r0ckoN 🎵
do pixies velouria
This is great! Where should one start with The Replacements?
The Let It Be album.
"Tim" is also great..the songs "Left of the Dial" and "Bastards of Young" are classics!
Huh, couldn't have sworn it was flongé. As a certain other guitar youtuber mispronounces it
Maybe "Within Your Reach"?
Kind of sounds like Van Halen
No way Westerberg went through all that to play that song.
