  • Ahead of her Tate Modern retrospective we spoke with Joan Jonas in her New York City studio.
Joan Jonas is one of the most important American artists to emerge in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her pioneering experimentation and work in video and performance provided a foundation from which this type of art could evolve and grow.
In this film she talks about her love of New York City and places ‘that have holes in them’ as well as her preparation for her exhibition and the live events which will take place at Tate Modern in March 2018.
Now in her 80s, Jonas reflects on her boundary-breaking career.

She was a very cold, almost cruel, person and would not allow others interested in the visual art at MIT to join her program but force to drop the enrollment, although it was not full, and her course was opened to my department at MIT. There were lots of other well-respected artist professors. But she was not one of them, though. I felt she had used the title of the professorship for her own benefit, but, not to open up. Her Ph D student I dealt with for a semester looked, and talked like a servant to her.

Soft and sharp, gentle and raw; amazing art by an amazing woman.

There is nothing about her work that moves me, inspires me or prompts me to see the world in a new way. People made jewelry out of dead people's hair 150 years ago. I don't see her products as lasting, either.
