  • Artist Billie Zangewa welcomes us at her home in Johannesburg, South Africa. As we tour the city, we learn about what inspires and influences her work. From the love for her son, to her experience of silk as a 'transformative material' - her focus is largely rooted in the home and plays into what she describes as ‘daily feminism.’

Wonderful; the focus on unpaid labor that keeps society moving, the materiality, the fabric, the way she gives form to motherhood, her black feminism, and the work.. the work is incredible, the colors, the compositions, the stories, everything. What a bright light.

Love the way she gives importance to the "everyday", often times overlooked beauty of life experience. Her work is extremely original and engaging.

The way she talks about her son reminds me of how invaluable a mother’s love is. So beautiful. Also the shot of the books? I’m about to extend my reading list a bit!

I was lucky enough to be studying art with Billie in the nineties. Seeing this I realise again what a bunch of picks the professors were, and how centered the young woman to rise in spite of them.

The ability to create dimension like that with fabric art is uncommon and shows more than just a talented hand but a talented mind.
