The seattle 89 metallica concert is one of the greatest live shows in the history of music. No idea what "vitamins" they had that night but they were tight af. Blackened and their underrated masterpiece "The Thing That Should Not Be" from the same concert is also highly recommended but like somebody already said, the entire show is pure energy.
This concert was Metallica in their prime. My brother was at this concert, and he said there was plaster falling of the ceiling of the old Seattle Center Coliseum, it was so loud! 🤘🔥🤘
Metallica in their prime. Think about it. It was the end of the 80s and basically almost the end of metal/rock as the most popular music. This concert was the peak of heavy metal IMO
Shmick ! Metallica weren’t just thrash even in the 80s and I’ll argue it until the day I die. They were/are just heavy metal. They had too many slower songs and more progressive/super long songs. I even say that because of songs like the thing that should not be harvester of sorrow and the god that failed they are their own niche of heavy metal and for what would end up being one of the torchbearers and most legendary metal bands I’d say if this is their peak it’s one of the crowning achievements in heavy metal if it’s not THE peak.
@@Huddle_House56 I absolutely agree. Metallica has one full thrash album, and it’s Kill Em All. However, there’s been plenty of great metal since the 80s, and Metallica probably peaked career-wise in the late 90s.
I never get enough of this show.James is just raw, distilled aggression, and Lars has fucking INSANE stamina, playing those double-kick parts with relentless intensity.
When you watch a Metallica concert, you will be blown away by Lar's stamina...he's an animal. One other point, that was the final song of the set...their energy is something else!!! Whether you like Metallica or not, its impossible not to enjoy them live. Personally, i love them.
That concert looks like a blast! I’ve never been to a Metallica concert, but my brother has a couple times and said saying it’s wild is an understatement for sure!
This is Metallica at their ABSOLUTE peak, the songwriting, James and Jason’s voices, Kirks guitar, Jason’s bass, Lars was undeniably at his best drumming wise at this time. The sheer energy is unbeatable. 1987-1992 was peak Metallica.
I've seen Metallica live over 30 times! They always delivered! Not the same anymore but they're like 60 now so it's understandable. But 88-2000, their live shows were untouchable.
Metallica is my all time favorite band. I’ve been a fan since about 1985! I’m 52 now and still listen to them daily on my way to work. I’ve seen them live about 6 times now and then I went to their drivin covid concert. They still kill it live! This song is totally for their fans and about their fans and the energy we give them and they in turn give back to us! 🤟
That's what's crazy to me. There were some hard rock/metal stations (KNAC in Los Angeles), but yeah, they weren't getting wide play on the radio. I was first introduce to Metallica in 1992, but by then, they were already played on MTV and Enter Sandman had just come out.
I dont care what anyone says “Live in Seattle 1989” is their best live performance- the sound, the vocals, the stage, the intro, the crowd energy, the lighting, the camera angles, evrything was on point that night.
What was remarkable was that Metallica scored 2 platinum records (1 million copies each) by 1988 w/ no radio or video airplay... They just toured constantly as their fanbase grew by thousands w/ each run through America & Europe. By 1989, they were so popular on their own that MTV came to them... so they filmed the music video for 'One' and it pushed the 4th album 'And justice for all' album to 2X platinum in sales. On this 'Justice' tour, Metallica were headlining arenas w/ Queensryche opening for them... and by the time the tour ended in 1990, Metallica were poised to get even bigger w/ the next album, which became the self-titled 'black' album. For me, the first 10 years of Metallica's career was the best, from 1983 til 1993... they were the biggest metal band on the planet. The disappointment came when they returned in 1996 w/ the 'Load' album, cut their hair short, and were no longer as driven or aggressive as they had been in the past... Even today, I watch clips of the band performing their old songs, and they just don't look or sound the way they used to... Compared to Slayer, who actually sounded better and more vicious in concert in their later years than in the 80's.
This 1989 concert was their best liver performance on video without a doubt. Every song from this concert is killer. This was Metallica in their prime. If you want to see some insane drumming, go react to the band Infant Annihilator and the song "Cuntcrusher" drum play through.
I appreciate you guys for not pausing the video so much like all the other youtubers. Important to keep that energy going and not interrupting! Also I do appreciate how you use headphones. With spectacular bands like this you need to really feel the music. Highly recommend the song Master of Puppets live from this show in Seattle 89. Absolutely killed it.
If you guys love Metallica you absolutely have to listen to this concert in its entirety it’s f***ing LEGENDARY! Most energy in a concert ever. EDIT: The studio version cover of “Am I Evil?” By Metallica will have you thrashing!!!!
Yeah man, these guys ABSOLUTELY went crazy on this performance. From later interviews they said they played this song 20% faster than normal just to push themselves harder and to see if they could pull it off LIVE. WELL, job well done guys. This was speedy AF.
James can hardly sing the lycrics quick enough that's how fast this BPM was. They played this entire show FASTER THEN THEY RECORDED IT. Thats crazy. I believe the BPM for this song was something like 220 which is inhumannn
It's not even close to double speed lol. But yeah, it's definitely much faster than the record. Especially the riff right after the solo/outro riff. they play that part even faster than the already faster than normal track.
The Shortest Straw ( Washington DC July 17 1992) Nobody reacts to this for some reason. To me it is the best Metallica song or at least one of their best
I had to watch the video to the end - There was a very cool joke Lars was backstage. A very similar situation was with Angus Young, in the Rocker video - jewellery collection official video, there he was also so exhausted that he had to go backstage and drink water and breathe with an oxygen mask right during the song at the concert, then they put him on the head of the security guard and let him into the audience. I think this is the best return to my work, Angus is a unique musician.
This era was the pinnacle of Metallica. Everyone was performing at their highest, particularly Lars. Later on, age started taking its toll on Lars and he went way simpler with the drum tracks and just about abandoned the double bass altogether then lost his edge. But they're damn near 60 now so it's not unexpected.
I love you both. Metallica is my fav band and will be still. You have to do some Instrumentals of them. Who needs lyrics? The guitars, bass and drums tell you the story. Orion and The Call Of Ktulu are one of the best instrumental ever. imo
I saw this tour, I was at a show roughly about 1 month before this Seattle show was filmed. We pushed our way up to about the 2nd row, which blended into the 1st row...........the hype was off the map for the whole show.....I'll never forget it!!
This song is the opener on the Puppets album, and you can see why I skipped this one and started on track 2 when I was learning to drum. Great reaction; that's why I come back.
Some of their newer stuff rocks as well. Try "The day that never comes" if you haven't already. The official video is the best in my opinion. but the live version is also cool AF!
Lovebites--Glory to the world (heavy metal all female band from Japan) or Dokken--Kiss of Death (80s Metal, George Lynch one of the 80s great guitarist)
You guys need to check out the lyric video for "Disposable Heroes". Not only do I think it's Metallica's best song, but I honestly feel like it's the GREATEST METAL SONG EVER RECORDED.

I was fortunate enough to see Metallica live before Cliff was killed in the tour bus accident and I’ve seen them four times after. Metallica has been killing it since the early 80’s and are a permanent player in my heart and playlist. I recommend starting at the beginning with the album KILL’EM ALL. My fav’s on that are FOUR HORSEMAN, WHIPLASH, SEEK AND DESTROY, and METAL MILITIA. Plus there is a bass solo featuring Cliff Burton where he plays that bass as if it were a guitar. Unheard of in it’s time. Keep seeking the broader truth, my lovelies! And don’t feel shy about showing that beautiful daughter of yours!

Didn't know then they would be as hugely popular as they quickly became...and I bought the album "Kill 'Em All" as soon as I saw it in a Berkeley record store....I recall buying a FANG album titled "Landshark" on the same day. And yes...I listened to Metallica's album more than I listened to FANG's. Funny how Metallica late did a cover of one of FANG's songs, The Money Will Roll Right In"...but Metallica likely caught a FANG show in SF just as I did a number of times.
Regarding the tempo and Lars, let's just say that this performance (especially this particular song) is the result of when you mix immense talent and cocaine before taking the stage HAHAHA. Great reaction as always
