    I can’t control what STG is going to do so I’m not going to worry about it. But I’m hoping tobacco farms don’t die off and growers find new buyers to supply, develop new leaf and we witness the dawn of a golden age of boutique blenders.

    As a European pipe smoker, I can say that on one hand you're right, the people who enjoy the hobby the way you promote it are just a niche, even though they aren't non-existent. On the other hand, the time of the older pipe smoker who would just fill his pipe with anything and just smoke all day is gone, people who do that are maybe not more numerous than the other kind, and it's only a few times a year you will walk pass a man with a pipe in his mouth, even in the bigger cities. Last year I met a very outgoing 31 year-old who saw my pipe in amazement, and told me it was the first time in her life she actually saw someone smoke a pipe.

    Thank you, Bradley, for always keeping us up to date, along with all your wonderful tobacco reviews! You are the first one I ever watched concerning pipes and tobacco. I've seen all your content and then some every time I buy a new blend. You are always spot on, on the taste, strength etc on these tobaccos. Once again thank you for all being here to keep us up to date and entertained. You are a true pipe community soldier!

    STG itself is a product of the global regulatory market and as you said the regulatory hurdles and high cost to new market entrants stifle freedom in personal and economic arenas.
    More righteous anger should be directed at the governments of the world. ☮️

    • @jona5517
      @jona5517 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Exactly. It’s the lack of a true free market and government intervention into all of our lives including the corporate world, which is a pillar fascism, that creates these problems. Just like idiots that think the CEO of a health insurance company being murdered is just fine. When the problem with American healthcare is the government, and that was before Obama care, which Obamacare made it 10x worse. Governments are not your friend. The original meaning literally means to control and steer your subjects to follow your command, like sheep.

    It would ease a lot of stress... maybe.

      @stuka65 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      If Sutliff is truly going away, which I am not yet convinced is an absolute, Cornell and Deihl probably could fill this void as they have a large amount of base tobaccos in their offerings so its possible to reformulate them, I imagine.

      Many of them have said they will adapt. Ernie from watch city is active on forums and said he said has been preemptively buying c&d blending tobacco and is very happy with the quality over sutliffs. The only one I have seen who seems like he doesnt want to adapt is Ken Byron Ventures. A lot of people forget or didnt know that blenders have been through this before when McClelland shut down.

    I will definitely support C&D in the future. Having less than a year under my belt in the pipe hobby, I won’t be hurt as bad as all the old timers. I’ve only ever had Escudo from STG, the Peterson from STG and all my Stokkebye products from STG. I enjoy them all and don’t have any memory of blends of the past.
    Still gotta try Rattray’s/G&H. I’ve only tried a couple different C&D blends, so I will soon be expanding my cellar to include them and all the stuff they manufacture for other companies. I’m hoping my guys at Watch City cigar find a way around the Sutliff fall. I’ve come to really enjoy Old Dominion and look forward to trying their other options

    STG's revenues for 2023 were $1.27 billion, mostly cigars. Global tobacco product sales in 2023 were $941 billion (cigarettes, cigars, e-cig and smoking tobacco) of which smoking tobacco was $59.3 billion (according to Statista). Another site shows only $73 million in pipe tobacco sales in 2023. This seems more realistic and reasonable. STG's market share depends. Nothing we say or do will change the situation. In short, smoke what you like, cellar what you can, and enjoy life.

    It will be interesting to see if CD purchases any of the sutliff blends. I know there are a decent handful of them that are actually good and sell quite well. At least in the American market. Haven't found a replacement for the aromatic english type blend of sutliff that is all but sold out everywhere now. Thankfully CD already makes a revelation style blend.

    Writing from England the vast majority of pipe smokers I see are old men, probably smoking the codger blends we have over here like Gold Block and St Bruno. The artisanal blends really are a niche in an already extremely niche hobby, and in my experience the tobacconists selling them are surviving mostly through cigar sales more than anything else. And that's without mentioning the continual tax hikes and government legislation restricting where people even can smoke, which is all aimed at cigarette smokers, but inevitably hits pipe smokers hard as collateral damage. IMO, unless they find a way to reduce or reframe all of the ill effects of tobacco smoking (literally a lung cancer cure for example), and it leads to a smoking renaissance and relaxing of government disincentives and regulations, as has happened with cannabis, the future for this hobby looks bleak.

      My first take was are they purposely buying companies to implode the market availability. If they are against tobacco use, it makes sense to buy a company with the sole purpose of gutting it's lineup hoping the customer gets frustrated and disappear. They all have their hands in multiple pots, they will still have income while the employees get laid off.

    To reiterate, there will always be companies that attempt to control a certain market but there will always be smaller players who are willing to enter the markey. e.g. IBM was quite complacent in owning the "computer" market until that small upstart company, Microsoft showed up and made IBM'.s product obsolete almost overnight.

    I follow market trends in pipe tobacco closely and I can assure everyone in the YTPC 1. Captain Black original in the black and white pouch is a massive best seller worldwide more so than all other blends, Their bulk version of this, RLP 6 is also sold in great quantities around the globe, these of course are Lane Limited blends and STG owns Lane. It is and will be a major cash cow for STG for years to come. 2 Bradley is right on about the importance of the YTPC to the larger market, sad to say we in the "hobby" end of the pipe world are a tiny tiny blip on the larger market that STG is looking for. 3.. As I mentioned in Bradley's excellent analysis last week, there are always small players who are eager to jump in to the smaller market (e.g. The Charatan line of blends made a brief appearance years ago when Dunhill backed out of the pipe tobacco business years ago and were fairly good match for the Dunhill blends.). Bottom line folks is do not panic, there will be excellent blends available long after this consolidation takes place. 4. Keep a close eye on Laudisi Distribution Group who owns and/or distributes CandD, GL Pease, Gawith and Hoggarth, Samuel Gawith, HU to tobaccos and has now added several lines of hand made cigars so I assume they are going to be a major player in the pipe market targeting the more hobbyist end of the business which is where most of us fall.

    I'm going to guess that STG's strategy is going to be to implement the 80/20 rule. 80% of our business comes from 20% of our customers. Unfortunate for us, but that's the nature of business. Night cap, from my experience, is From Beyond by C&D. Its a limited release, but once they have it make sure to stock up. They use aged tobacco, so it is a little more on the medium bodied side, but Jeremy reeves himself was trying to replicate an aged Nightcap he tasted while back, and is the purpose of From Beyond to imitate. He achieved that. It’s one of the best Latakia blends I have ever tasted.
      For EMP, heard exhausted rooster by C&D is a close match, or rather C&D version of EMP, but never really tried it. For MM965, you’ll just have to stock up as nothing seems to be like it in the market :)

    You're so right about how capitalism is misused. There isn't even A capitalism. There are different kinds! But in classical economics, monopolies were seen as bad. Adam Smith was not a fan. And monopolies are bad! Smith and others reacted to mercantilism, which was monopolistic and cronyist. Also, people conflate markets with capitalism. Capitalism is based on a market economy, but markets predate capitalism. People do the same thing to socialism. There are many different kinds. Anarchosyndicalism is much different than state socialism for example.

      To fully judge STG's moves, I'd want to know more about what is happening with worldwide pipe T consumption: is it growing, shrinking, or holding steady? Also, I'd want to know the profit/loss status of each of those blends. STG is to a charity; it's a business. If I love a blend, but only I and three other people are willing to buy it, I'd be upset -- but also understanding of the economics of the situation.

Monopolies have always been bad, competition has always been good. It's capitalism, but the problem is really government. So many rules and regulations stifle competition. One can extend this to the current debate on the health insurance industry. People say the system is broken because it's too capitalistic, and government needs to provide universal health care. But, they fail to realize that the reason why the health insurance industry is broken is because of the many rules and regulations that government has created. Less government is better.

    Technically in a pure capitalism there would never be a monopoly because there would always be a strive for competition. Literally the "invisible hand" would be money the people crying late stage capitalism don't know the name Adam Smith or read "Wealth of Nations" or know that he wrote the book or anything else. What is also interesting is that econ professors will allude to the book and never seemingly require reading it. I've met more people who have read Marx which both of his most popular works combined are about half the pages of Wealth of Nations and are much more emotional. The problems as I would say with systems is that people do not confine themselves to boxes, people cheat, they will not pursue the "best" course of action. So the philosophy doesn't always work the way it's presented. I find Smith's view of humanity to be for more close to reality than Marx and that can be seen in economic disparity in the countries foundations of economics in all of history. I am not sure econ should even be a high school class, hardly if ever is taught by an econ Phd or masters the common history teach have no clue what they are talking about. heck econ 100s ion college teaches frameworks and if you stop there it's actually bad because in 200s you learn what happens in 101 is a truncation to get the language in concepts but reality doesn't work that way at all. Listening to supply and demand conversations... the brain hurts.

      Right! People aren't always rational. They're prone to emotion and taking shortcuts too. Economics and economic theory are huge fields with wildly different methods and assumptions. People often don't think how capitalism needs a state and the rule of law to function either. And not even in the sense of regulations but in the sense of a reliable currency, infrastructure, and courts to enforce contracts.

      I read WON just out of interest. I have not studied economy. Found it extremely interesting in historical sense, and far lighter read than usually claimed.
      What is mostly ignored about The Wealth Of Nations is how consistently through the whole book Smith kept warning about wealthy men getting together and scheming against the common good.
      He gave no ideas how to stop this from happening. I think strong antitrust legislation would be the best shot, but with all the power the corporations have, that's not going to happen.

    When thinking about capitalism, one must be specific.
    We suffer under what is called Supply Side Economics, which favors producers and has created the billionaire class.
    The alternative is Demand Side Economics, which favors the buying market.
    The 1971 Powell Memo, and Ronald Reagan implemented Trickle Down Economics, which is the Powell Memo made into policy.

      @@AllofJudea I don't think it's the perique. I noticed a bit of this funk in Pirate Kake. I assume it's some additive, maybe an anti-mold agent but I don't know. Nobody's else's perique smells like this and C&D blends didn't smell like this until maybe within the last five years.

      @@AllofJudea It doesn't come through in the taste that I can remember but the smell! My first thought it was like stomach reflux. It somewhere between stinky cheese and a septic wound. The few blends that don't have that stink that I am aware of are their traditional rum soaked blends like Black Frigate and Blockade Runner.

      Honestly, that sounds a bit like perique to me.😂 Often has a funky cheese smell. I've encountered it in Haunted Bookshop before, also Gaslight... Both blends I love. But to each their own, I could totally see how that could be offputting.

    Ok. I see your point about definitions and fascism. But it seems like “capitalism” is a slippery word. Some use it to describe the good stuff that happens in the economy, and when the bad stuff happens they blame something else. Meanwhile, the rich get richer and working class people like us seem stuck. Oh well, I don’t mean to be argumentative. I enjoy your channel and thank you for the effort and skill you put into it. I’ve learned a lot from you in this hobby.

      It's a sticky area. We look at how much CEOs make and feel like it isn't fair and that more should go to workers. Someone pointed out to me a few years back that cutting CEO pay won't necessarily change much for workers, at least not for massive corporations. For example, at that time (maybe 6 or 7 years ago) taking the Walmart CEO salary and distributing equally among all Walmart employees would result in a pay raise of something like $10 a year. Not very helpful.
      There's a guy up in Oregon or Washington who runs a loan processing business. He raised all of his employees' pay to $70,000/ year minimum and lowered his own to match. When Covid hit, he paid them full pay while they were off. All of his employees work hard for him and are very loyal, and even pooled their own money to buy him a really nice car that he had wanted. We need more bosses like that guy. (Funny enough, he claims to hate capitalism, but his business is an example of capitalism being done right - the most important investment in any venture is in the people who work there.)
