Succession has a knack for finding Shakespearean drama and dark hilarity in an honest reflection of today’s billionaires and media ecosystems. But how much of it is directly inspired by specific facts? It’s long been noticed that the Roy family's story seems to have some overlap with the real-life happenings of the Murdoch and Redstone families. Obviously, "Succession" is a work of fiction that goes far beyond these inspirations, and the creators have stated that the show isn't directly based on any one particular family, but let’s take a look at some of the interesting parallels.

Idk why anyone was surprised none of the kids got the company. Logan dangled it like a carrot in front of those kids. And they were constantly battling for his love, approval. They couldn’t stand him but as he lay dying they reverted right back to scared children..He was a broken man who turned around and broke everyone in his life. His kids, his wives, his employees, his mistresses…and that’s the legacy his kids will carry on.

This show is all about growing up in a dysfunctional family where the head of the family has a psychological disorder called Narcissistic Personality Disorder, or NPD. The Roy children show all of the signs of generational trauma. The parent passes down insecurity and dysfunction to their children by grooming them for abuse through normalizing the abuse. Children rely upon their parents for safety and sustenance and cannot leave the abuse. Generally speaking, they develop coping mechanisms to deal with the abuse until they grow to adults when they internalize the abuse as a truth and repeat the abuse to the families they create. The children of NPD parents desperately yearn for approval and love from their parent, while the abusive parent uses conditional love to create a psychologically addictive pattern of acceptance and rejection. The show is called Succession not because of the question of who will run the media empire, but to point to the major theme of how NPD abuse gets passed from one generation to the next. It's the best show I've ever seen on this topic with King of the Hill being second best. If you are focused on liberals vs conservatives or specific sources of inspiration for characters or plot then you are missing the most impactful themes.

I would add two more media families in to the influences, both named Thomson: first there was DC Thomson, the Scottish media mogul based in Dundee (!), who famously clashed with Winston Churchill, then a MP for Dundee, in the 1922 general election.
Then there was Roy (!) Thomson, the Scots-Canadian who started his media empire in Scotland and expanded it to include over 200 newspapers including the Globe & Mail, the Times and Sunday Times. His son Kenneth sold the Times titles to Rupert Murdoch, and his son David acquired Reuters to form Thomson Reuters and is the richest person in Canada today.

Another superficial take about Succession which is simply about wealthy families, all media outlets and not just one in particular. I think to stick Succession to the Murdochs does a great deservice to people who haven't seen the show. Succession is not about the Murdock, it is a masterpiece.

    • @bigsistahtips
      @bigsistahtips ปีที่แล้ว +15

Yes it is. The writer wrote the first script called Murdoch and with years made modifications and renamed it succession.
Jesse Armstrong used to work for powerful people as part of their communications team. He worked in politics a lot. That’s why he can write about all sorts of powerful people. But the Murdoch family was his inspiration for this series. Being a journalist it only makes sense that he’d hate him hehe

@@bigsistahtips my point is that the show doesn't make it a point to make a biopic of this family and it's a lazy shortcut to make about the show. You said it, he scratched the original idea to make it into something that's not loosely based on some family because it can't stand on its own then. @MJ-py7dm ปีที่แล้ว

@@robchuk4136 Bringing real life parallels creates a need to compare. "Is the show accurately depicting this?" Is the writer related to X, in philosophy of art class, we talked about how knowing more about an author makes the mind rationalize elements in the work of art but deteriorates our opinion of the work itself. We naturally want to think of it as some rendition of reality instead of seeing it as the work of art it is on its own. That's my 2 cents about this show, making it about the Murdochs is pointless when Succession has elements from Shakespeare, The Godfather, The Sopranos, and so many works of art. We saw in the last episode that the media empire serves as nothing but backdrop to a torn family like the millions of torn families we can relate to.

@@MJ-py7dm nothing in this video is incompatible with those other sources of inspiration. Art draws inspiration from many sources, so comparing the show to the Murdochs doesn't even preclude the Godfather or Shakespeare. The video simply focuses on a specific topic, the way one is expected to do in an essay. This channel has many videos about Succession that also mention the parallels to King Lear, for instance, so I really don't see what the problem is. They've never claimed that the show is nothing but a fictionalization of the Murdoch family, just that there are some similarities.

Succession is actually more inspired (if not based on) a mini-series from Austrian TV for Netflix in 2015 called "Altes Geld" (Old Money). The Murdock family just wished they had such intrigue...more under- than overwhelming, just like Succession the show. Well acted but overrated. 😂

ATN in succession is a parody of ALL news outlets, not just FOX news. ATN pokes fun at MSNBC, CNN, etc.
The Roy family is a parody of ANY family dynasty: the karsdashians, royal family, etc

Not really, the inspiration for the Roy family and ATN were Fox News and the Murdoch's.Even Jesse Armstrong said that.

ATN is supposed to be a conservative or more right leaning cable news channel. That would mean in this story it would represent FOX.

No ATN is pretty clearly FOX news

Obviously this show draws inspiration from the Trump Fambly of which there are too few Marys. I'm Liberal Democrat but proudly buy my guitar strings and cables from Mitt Romney...well, from Guitar Center and Music & Arts, which are owned by Senator Romney's Bane Capital.
When he ran against Mr. Obama in 2012, I obviously supported POTUS' reelection, but I felt kinda bad for the Senator...Christian Conservatives were saying that they backed Mr. Romney so that the GOP could take back the White House, "But he follows a made-up religion"...pot, meet kettle.
Well, yes, we can think critically and see how Mormonism was invented in the USA by a convicted grifter, but how is MAINSTREAM Christianity any less "made-up"?

@@baxoutthebox5682 The showrunner said in an NPR interview on All Things Considered that "Succession" draws inspiration from the Trump fambly, and mentioned the fact that the Michael Douglas character in "Wall Street" did likewise.
Have you been following the Righteous Gemstones? Again, a show inspired by a famous fambly, this time the long-term plans of the Bakker family of the PTL club.
You need to look into how real events inspire shows. "There Will Be Blood" is rooted in the Teapot Dome Scandal.
