Succession's Season 2 Finale ends with Brian Cox’s titan of industry, Logan Roy, cracking a small smile. It’s a smile that might seem odd given that he’s watching his son, Kendall, publicly throw him under the bus on TV and expose his culpability for the cruises scandal that could cause him to be ousted as CEO from the company he built. So why does Logan look, on some level, a little bit happy about this?

It’s about his “family” the legacy, the power, and the exercise of said power. His children aren’t their own people but extensions of himself and that dream. It’s classical narcissism and megalomania.
In another life he’d just be a dime-a-dozen sad little king in a sad sack town in the Midwest.

Each of the three siblings up one another in buying to be the favorite and to get a 'Whattaboy', but Shiv is Logan's favorite.
No he loves himself.
Time and time again he makes bad decision that could ruin the company when he doesn't get his way.
He doesn't love anyone but himself and feeling in control like a true narcissist.
Kendall’s scene with his mother was perhaps the most heartbreaking scene of the second season. Just the the final door of familial access slammed shut.
100%. He regressed big time even calling her "Mum".
Great bit of telly.
That whole episode was so heartbreaking. I was crying when he went to the house of the boy he killed. He looked like such a sad puppy and you could tell guilt was eating him alive. Then he went home and was seeking to unburden himself on the one person in the world that is supposed to love you if no one else does and she basically told him she didn't want to hear it and disappeared the next morning. My poor Kendall 😢

Do an analysis of Tom and how the upper middle class want to separate from the lower class but would never be accepted by the upper class so they're stuck in the middle
the way tom is treated vs how he treats Greg specifically is my favorite dynamic in the show (it’s also the funniest in my opinion, you all know what it takes to make a tomlette.)

I found it also extremely interesting how much logan roy exemplifies this toxic culture, not only in his business but also in his family. One of the reasons why his kids are the way they are is because they grew up in toxicity and don't seem to know anything else. There's like no escape from it, it's in the family home and in their professional life as well.

As someone who is from a toxic family, I found it extremely hard to watch Austerlitz, the episode where they went to family therapy. All the Roy children are too afraid to open up about their feelings in front of the therapist. My guess is it's not the first time they've done it and each time, nothing gets better. It was only when Kendall turned up high that he finally had the guts to confront their dad.
He also amplified the toxic culture outside of his family through ATN

Succession is like the best seasons of game of thrones but instead of being set in a fantastical world, it’s set in our modern world which honestly seems like fantasy considering the fact that the rich tycoons who rule it have more power than any medieval king or God

one of my favourite things about this channel is that the comment section has been either constructive or wholesome - and these comments prove it. truth be told, Mad Men is my favourite series of all time so if Succession can be on par (in terms of character development and writing) i am absolutely on board

At the end of Season 2 I was so proud of Kendall for dethroning his dad right there and then instead of just fully dissociating. Logan was about to send him to prison and Kendall has had such a difficult time defending himself against Logan.
The only time he’s been able to immediately and directly stand up to his father in the moment is when Logan hit Iverson or Roman.
But in a way, Kendall is still seeking his Dad’s approval so in a sick way he really hasn’t gotten out from under Logan at all.
@@samfilmkid I can see that, but he's definitely on a journey. Of the few options available when he realized Logan was throwing him under the bus he chose self preservation over self sacrifice to an unworthy parent.
It's interesting that he can only stand up to his father when he's defending someone else. Iverson, Roman, and the "NRPI"

The most hilarious part of this show is that its clear from the pilot that none of the Roy children are capable, knowledged enough or responsible enough to run Dad's business. Its not that they are too emotional, its that they are more eager to run a company than know how to run a company. The worst may be Chiv. She literally doesn't know how to do the job she wants. She is just more cut throat than her siblings. The smartest may be Roman because he is the most aware of what he doesn't know.
Agreed. That highlights the idiocy of a system in which the company would be passed down by virtue of lineage. While not all major companies are handles this way, far to many are. So many billionaire took over their parent empire by simply being the least bad choice in the bunch.
Yeah, but another important thing to be noticed is that Logan himself is responsible for creating his incapable children. He just wants to extend his ego without knowing that they are individuals with their own mind, traits and complexities. No one is able to create themselves because everybody has a different path and story.
Honestly, both shiv and kendall could probably do an ok job. Connor's got his head in the clouds and Roman lacks the ability to do the everyday grind that a CEO requires, but Shiv and Kendall both are smart enough to listen to their good counselors and make reasonably-OK decisions, and diligent enough to stick to it when it gets tedious and boring. Remember, they don't have to build an empire, just maintain it.
The problem is that Roy can't stand to let anyone take over, so he'll undercut them when it looks like they might succeed.

According to the HBO site, Shiv is actually the youngest and Roman is the second youngest - I find this interesting as I just assumed Roman was the youngest as well.
I think that's why Caroline seems to hate Shiv. Logan pressured her to have a third child with him because he already had two sons and wanted a daughter for a change.

I think NRPI has a deeper, more disturbing meaning. It's not that they don't matter, it's that they don't exist in their heads. As in, they're not worth building a mental, emotional model for. Like the caterer or the family they gave they offered a million dollars for the baseball. This is definitely a consequence of status inequality, and in the case of the show it extends from Logan Roy's natural narcissism downwards. Which is why one of the questions everyone asks him is, is this real? As in, are you going to do anything about this or are you just going to put another delusion in my head to control me? The reason Succession has so much punch is that it shows how late corporate capitalism empowers people like this. All civilizations do - many of the "great men" in history were war criminals of the worst order - but we must ask if we as a society should enable their behavior and make their perceptions about other people "real".
This show is amazing. The characters and their hypocrisy makes me recoil from disgust everytime I watch, especially since as a viewer we see them for what they truly are. Logan bullies his kids, his kids bully others and those others also look for outlets to their anger. Tom is the best example. Acts like a real 'player' and 'corporate bad boy' around colleagues (and Greg) by insisting he's a prick when infact his role and attitude around the Roys is laughable. Really goes to show how easy it is to get caught up in toxic cultures: Everyone steps on the weaker person just to appear bigger. The Roy kids would actually be very happy if they didnt constantly have to prove this 'killer instinct' and prove themselves to Logan

I personally think it takes much more strength to be a kind and caring person. Being a twisted liar who is devoid of emotion is a sign of great weakness.
It was not the comment "You're not a killer" that drove Kendall over the edge.
It was a comment after that. When Ken says, "It should be me. I should have to pay... for the boy." And Logan says, "No, no, No! No Real Person involved..." It was that comment that made Kendall see Logan as a monster, that needed to be destroyed. Kendall had been told several times that he was not a Killer. So many times that it lost its effect on him. And something he grew to believe and wear as a badge of honor. It gave him the ability to see himself as GOOD and his Dad as BAD.
This is what the ACTOR Jeremy Strong said about Kendall. Because it was Jeremy Storng that went to the writers and said "Youre not a killer is not enough to trigger a war." It was the casual dismissal of the dead boy, as well as the cruises victims, plus the victimization of hismelf and his siblings, the dismissal of Naomi... resentment from losing the take over - it all cumlinated.
And lets not forget. Kendall also seems to have Narcisstic Personalty Disorder, as well as addiction issues. He is not a saint. He is a coked up squirrel.

Logan will probably never be content with any of them taking over, he's jealous of them cause he spoiled them rotten and gave them everything he didn't have when he was their age and he can't stand the fact that they want to run a company just cause they're his children and not because they worked their asses off like he did, he obviously wants the business to stay in the family but at the same time knows they're not as capable as he was to build it up from the ground, that's what I find the most fascinating about this show and probably the most relatable quality about their whole dynamic.
Honestly that’s a ugly paradox, to want your legacy and success to live on and on and on because you gave your all to it, and he has no choice, family is the safest option, he’s groomed them for this role, he knows they know the company inside and out but I think he loathes them all. He wants them dependent on him out of fear most likely, that one of them will do better or that one of them will fail, and he just doesn’t know.And I think he hates them for that unsureness because to him they aren’t ready enough but he keeps moving the finish line
It’s true that there are a lot of parallels to real life history where many family dynasties were created by one hard working person who “pulled themselves up by their bootstraps” but then they had kids who were too spoiled or unmotivated to actually be hard enough workers to take on that family business without running it into the ground. That’s why *most* family businesses don’t last that many generations. There are exceptions of course.

I don’t think the “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” narrative works here because his company was underwater in secret debt that very few people knew about. It’s pretty easy to appear to be a “successful” business when you have an endless line of credit and capital. I wonder if his debtors were willing to give him money to push their agenda because the way star company is suppose to be analogous to Fox News right.

that's a good idea, there are SO many shows just about wealthy families.
After 3 seasons i don't think the main theme is about success. It's more about abusive relationship between Logan the narcissistic father and his kids. The control he holds over his kids by dividing them, manipulating them into rivalry to seek his approval which is a lost cause. I think that's why the show highlighted how emotionally damaged the kids are.

The thing about the NRPI comment from Logan at the end of season two is that Kendall realized his father has learned nothing. He's sacrificing his son to get away clean. I'd turn too.

At the end of season 2 you can only hear one question Kendall is asked by reporters - "Do you have anything to say to the families of the victims of these crimes?" as he walks off the stage. After the first episode of season 3 it shows you how we've been set up to support Kendall as the "good guy" but he is not that at all probably.

I love this show but it is very triggering for me, being the daughter of a narcissistic father. Even though I don't talk to my father anymore, I feel I just can't escape his looming shadow.
The respect you have for such a figure but at the same time you hate him and the hate turns to shame for feeling that way. It's a roller coaster. So well depicted in the show.

It's very well put. I'm glad you were able to cut contact with your father. Also, you don't have to be ashamed of still loving him. Being able to feel love without accepting to be mistreated by him is just the proof that in spite of what you've been through, you're still able to love others and yourself.

The grown children of that series invariably make me think of the grown Trump children. They have inherited status and privelege, and yet they always look and act like they're totally miserable and desperate for love and affirmation. Don Jr. usually looks all coked up in his public appearances, while Tiffany looks unwanted and excluded, and Eric just looks like he'd much rather live a simple life as an organic farmer in Montana away from the rat race and the limelight and the nastiness. Ivanka is the only sibling who does looks together, but then again I guess she was the favorite, even if her marriage is likely a lavender one.

Is Kendall really on a journey of becoming a better person? I don’t think that’s what’s happening at least not this season. Seems like he’s going to be very performative on his quest to bring down his father and he’s only doing all of this to show to Logan that he is, in fact, a killer.
I feel like at this end of this show kendall would finally beat logan only to lose himself and become a "logan"
Honestly I don’t think that he’s becoming a better person. He’s like a big child that’s incredibly broken and had suppressed his emotions, the only release of those is when he does drugs. You can see that whenever he takes on his fathers order he looks like there’s a void inside. Then in season 3 when he finally gets his way and “proves” to his father that he can be the killer and can in fact kill him, he gets too lost in himself. He fails too realize that he actually needs therapy and he can’t change how his father views him cause quite frankly Logan is an a**hole, a bad father maybe even a villain but I would argue that most of the characters are as bad as each other so 😅

When I watch Succession, I'm always drawn back to the idea of childhood and arrested development. There's something inherently wrong and perverse about being born into immense wealth in a time where inequality levels near those of the Depression. In a society where money and its accumulation is considered the SINGULAR arbiter of success and the object of the masses' desire, growing up around so much of it can leave the kid with a feeling of "why does everyone want what I have so much of?" The meaning of life (and money, since isn't money life itself?) is lost. The end result is a cognitive dissonance in the child (exemplified by all of the Roy kids) where they cannot reconcile an objectively shitty and non-fulfilling life of endless facetiousness and vapidity with the societal narrative that money is supposed to make people happy- the kid feels wrong and empty for not giving money the same emotional and societal weight normal people do. That dissonance is at the core of each of the Roys' pathologies, and perfectly justifies their repeatedly subconscious self-sabotage: when you've always had it all, how else can you find meaning if not by crushing up the family jewels?

I'm late to the game on this one but I was also late to Succession. This level of analysis is why I watch this channel. It helps me make sense of that crazy family and it's also validating to see the very real parallels with the narcissism/power plays I experience on my mom's side. - The family scapegoat

It is pretty intense and sometimes painfully so; but it is worth watching.
It’s a great show. Everyone is awful and yet they all have a vulnerability to them so you don’t just dismiss them.

The show will give you anxiety then. I tried to watch it, and made it through the first season but everyone is so unlikeable and there is so much cruelty that I couldn’t watch it any more.
I love the way The Take analyze the movies and series we love to see, letting us address important issues making us reflect a about our society. it’s take my attention that I have never seen one episode talking about war, is genre of cinema so I think there is so much to analyze about it, more than ever is very important to reflect about it, with all that is happening on the world. Pd. I know The Take want the best for us, the audiences by helping us to reflect about how we perceive reality and why, so we can be more wisely about we believe and think. I would love to hear about this theme and I’m waiting for The Take talk about war movies and their impact about our society ideals, beliefs and behavior

the worst thing about success culture in my experience is when rich people put lower class workers or homeless people down and call them a failure just because they did'nt make it. Especually when it's conservative black people to other black people in the black community

Yeah, the Roys are definitely modern-day Lannisters (probably not an accident).
It honestly fits pretty well
Logan: Tywin (this one's obvious lol)
Kendall: Tyrion (despite having the most conflict with his father is arguably the most similar to him, substance abuse issues)
Shiv: Cersei (only daughter, constantly at odds with her father, very intelligent but thinks she's smarter than she actually is)
Roman: Jaime (pretty boy, initially portrayed as the worst™ member of the family but seems to care the most about other people)

Technically, Kendal didn’t really kill the boy. It’s really just an accident in my opinion. But the problem is he didn’t call the police to try and rescue, because he can’t have scandals like this at the time
He didn’t kill him with hands but he did with actions by causing his death

The problem is he was on the driver's seat under the influence, that's already illegal, doing that and getting into an accident that kills someone is different than just getting into an accident, since it can be concluded that the accident happened because of the drivers lack of control on their senses. Not calling for police is also pretty bad, but I do think the guy would've died anyway, Kendal tried to get him out and he was already gone, no ambulance would get there fast enough for him. So yeah it was an accident but he's still culpable.

Thoroughly enjoy the attempt at empathising the often troubling existence of the rich and white (very original), but objectively these are bad people. There is seemingly no way out because of the prevalent culture that allows them to move differently. I often find watching this show depressing because these are the models of people who make decisions that affect the lives of everyone else, including myself.
Whenever I find myself close to feeling sorry for one of them, they talk about laying off an entire company they own as easily as someone throws out garbage.
“No Real Person Involved.” These people are so narcissistic they literally don’t believe other people are PEOPLE. WTF. 🤢🤮
I think it’s crazy how most of our leaders are sociopaths. How we as a society raise sociopathic traits up in the world to succeed.

That final scene of season 2 had so much promise for this particular arc; Kendall possibly risking everything by turning on Logan because it truly is the right thing to do on behalf of all the 'NRPI' victims of Waystar Royco, Logan being pleased by this show of "killer instincts" and maybe even respects him for it, and the promise of an epic war between father and son. However, very quickly into the first episode of season 3, it's clear that Shiv is right; Kendall is doing this purely for the attention and to be seen as the "woke" hero, and isn't worthy of Logan's respect. Loved this season, but it kind of went no where in regards to that amazing season 2 finale.

Kendall and the boy that died reminded me of Bojack with Sarah Lynn. They both were high, aided in ending a young persons life, waited/didn’t call the authorities because they didn’t want a bad look.
I thought the dad smiles because he no longer has to struggle to hold on to his power. He no longer has to lie to hold on to power he no longer has. He smiles because he got a better deal by being dethroned.
I’m sure it’s a good video but all I’m commenting here is how the title made me realize succession has the word success in it. Neat!

When Roys brother says "your empire of shit." it reminds me of Nine Inch Nails - Hurt. Which speaks to shame, pain, disappointment and regret. All things I feel Roy, at his inner-most self combats with seeing how he has raised his kids.
A killer instinct is an important part of humanity. Disfunction in this part of the psyche is dangerous. What I have found is focusing on what you are protecting and only using it on external danger is what is most healthy. What makes this hard for Kendall is his external danger is his father. Amazing show.
I always thought Logan would respect someone who stood up to him...but everyone is way too scared to try.
