Glad you got it. That was a close one. And a lot of people struggled with today's puzzle. Especially purple. There were so many comments about it that I got it second. xD
When it says book subtitles, it means "generic" (as in genre) subtitles. ___: A Novel is a subtitle indicating the type of book you'll read. Same with ____: A Life, _____: Essays and ______: Part One (first of a series). Though anything could be a subtitle, in the context of the puzzle it means subtitles about the book's purpose, not just any possible words. (To be clear I think "A Life" is still rather difficult to get, took me forever lol just trying to explain the rationale)
I would have got to the point that I wouldn't care if I solved it or not because the categories are so tenuous. You did well to persevere with it, and solve it.
I got the blue category quickly. Just something clicks sometimes. "A novel" is what I feel like writers put as the subtitle when they want to be more serious or something. "A life" sounds like what comes after the name of the person for the biography when they can't come up with a better title. I don't know about "Essays" as a common subtitle on its own but of course it will have to go in the same category as "A novel." Now the purple category I had no idea and was just grateful to get the others done first.

A nasty puzzle today. A lot of streaks ended today.

A rose is a rose comes from a poem writer named Gertrude Stein in the poem Sacred Emily
That's totally not obscure! 😅
I thought it was the Shakespeare line. Brutal category either way.

I even knew some of the categories, just not the words or phrases used in them. My first two guesses were one aways
Got it in 2 min 42 sec
