There are people who sing songs and there are people who live and breathe songs. These guys are so steeped in sincerity and are paving a new style of Irish Folk that is gritty truthful and humorous! This life is a little better knowing that the Mary Wallopers are putting in work and playing those songs that belong in a canon that is literally miles deep!

@John Reb you should check out some of the well known big names from the folk game.
You can't really talk Irish Folk groups without the Dubliners. Other old names are The Clancy Brothers w/Tommy Makem. The Chieftains. The Wolfe Tones(especially if you like the rebel tunes). Many good solo performers, many of whom played with the Dubs, Christy Moore, Paddy Reilly, Tommy Makem, dominic behan(brother of highly notable writer Bredan Behan), Finbar Furey, Paul Brady,
Also don't forget about the Scots lots of great balladeers from Scotland who often sing songs written by Irishman. Dick Gaughan and Hamish Imlach being two of my favorites. The Mary Wallopers big song is actually a Hamish tune "Cod Liver and the Orange juice".
There are some crossover type groups I really like too that kind of span traditional folk sound and more modern rock. The Pogues, Thin Lizzy, Floggy molly, Aslan, Snow patrol and a bunch of others.

    • @evigvandrare
      @evigvandrare 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@John Reb All the other recommendations here are grand, but I'd also recommend artists like Lankum, Ye Vagabonds, The Bonny Men, Gnoss, Talisk, Sian, Staran, and individual artists like Iona Fyfe, Daoiri Farrell, Lisa O'Neill and Ewan McLennan.
Check out the channel run by Myles O'Reilly. He's the Irish version of Gems.

Love this SO much. Grew up on Irish folk music, travelled there a couple of times and loved every single second. Thanks for the music and the wonderful recording!
Chords and lyrics below as always folks! The outro is not 100% as they play slight alterations, but thats the basic idea
    Intro G D / G A / D / G A D
    Verses G D / G A
    Chorus D / G A D
    Outro D / G D / G A D / D / G D / G A D / G D A
    [Intro]
    [Verse 1]
Young Kenny and Colley and ould Martin Quinn
We made up together to smuggle the tin
    [Chorus]
With me right toorin-arinan, right toorin-arinan
    Right toorin-anay
    [Verse 2]
We walked all the day boys till the heels they grew raw
We hadn't the comfort of lying in the straw
    [Chorus]
With me right toorin-arinan, right toorin-arinan
    Right toorin-anay
    [Verse 3]
"I'll yoke her", says Colley "I'm wise to her tricks"
The more that he yoked her, the more the mare kicked.
    [Chorus]
With me right toorin-arinan, right toorin-arinan
    Right toorin-anay
    [Verse 4]
"I once had a Piebald all covered in spots
Manys the fiver she won in her trots."
    [Chorus]
With me right toorin-arinan, right toorin-arinan
    Right toorin-anay
    [Verse 5]
Up comes an ould sergeant with a laugh and a grin
"I'll put ye in jail boys for smuggling the tin"
    [Chorus]
With me right toorin-arinan, right toorin-arinan
    Right toorin-anay
    [Verse 6]
Up jumps the ould sergeant with a laugh and a smile
"I'll put ye in jail boys for smuggling a while"
    [Chorus]
With me right toorin-arinan, right toorin-arinan
    Right toorin-anay
    [Verse 7]
Well up jumps young Colley for to make this excuse
"If you'll let us all be sir, it's home we will scoot"
    [Chorus]
With me right toorin-arinan, right toorin-arinan
    Right toorin-anay
    [Verse 8]
We made our way home and we blessed our own faith
"To hell with the border, we're in the Free State"
    [Chorus]
With me right toorin-arinan, right toorin-arinan
    Right toorin-anay

I think you can do these corrections(but I could be wrong too):
      Verse 1:
"We made up together" for "Made up together"
      Verse 2:
"We walked all the day" for "Well they walked all the day"
"We hadn't the comfort of lying in straw" for "They hadn't the comfort of lying in the straw"
      Verse 3:
"The more that he yoked her" for "But the more that he yoked her"
      Verse 4:
"Many's the fiver she won in the trots" for "And many the fiver she won in her trots"
      Verse 5:
"put ye in jail" for "punch ye in jail"
      Verse 6:
"put ye in jail boys for smuggling this while" for "punch ye in jail boys for smuggling a while"

Heard Charles once say "we do a bunch of real gritty rebel songs". Been waiting to hear some of those for awhile now. I am sure trying to launch a musical career is tough enough during a pandemic but you don't want to get known as some kind of republican new wolfe tones group if you are lookin for your own sound and image.
But that being said well fuckin done, up the Mary Wallopers, and I hope to see Ireland be one nation and one people again someday.
