From the little I know about Schopenhauer, I don't think he deserves his reputation as the "darkest philosopher ever." There is an element of compassion to his thinking that is completely lacking in Nietzsche's, for example. I enjoyed the podcast!

      I agree

Agreed. None other than Schopenhauer gives me solace in this insanely cruel world. That literally!

It's the prose that uplifts, combined with the experienced _resonance_ of it all, neglected by nearly everyone else. This can be distinguished from the _contents_ of any specific idea he put forth, including compassion. Nietzsche was probably motivated, and subsequently over-motivated, to carve out his own philosophical identity atop and in direct opposition to "the teacher" he gushed over not that long before. He turned clownish and barky in the process, at least in my view.

@@No_Avail Literally died due to depressing his cns with chloral hydrate and whiskey. I think he could not accept the nihilism and wanted to overcome depression almost as if swimming upstream against a wave. I think Schoppys philosophy is the way to go. It does not cast a burden on you and validates your down times when feeling overwhelmed.

I don't think Melvin Bragg had his heart in this. He seems bored and confused at the beginning, and then at the end completely messes up the timing, and cuts everyone off. The commentators, on the other hand, are terrific, and it's well worth a listen.

Yeah, that was really strange. He could have at least let her finish what she was saying. I wanted to hear her explain what Camus borrowed from Schopenhauer about absurdity and the ultimate pointlessness of life!

    Thanks for this!
I don't agree with the term 'self denial' for this idea of 'enlightenment' or 'giving up the ego'.
It is instead the realization, that 'doing' does not lead to goals implemented (happiness, fulfillment...) . Self denial sounds so negativ and hard to do. Meanwhile 'world realization' is probably what happens - that whatever you do, doesn't help...

I disagree about the "infinitity" of the Will: for example sexuality; there comes a time in human life when sexuality no longer places intense incessant pressure in pursuit of the "reproductive act". It gradually withers to a degree that places it under a control that, in the best cases, extends freedom, sobers judgment, and deepens responsibility and involvement in other persons in a way that is not any longer a pinpoint focus on the reproductive act, but carries a maturation of closely related qualities hitherto kept in abeyance and distorted by earlier periods where the reproductive act is the dominant, underlying motive.
This maturation, at least in the best cases, need not lead to boredom of the chronic kind, because the playing field, so to speak, has become significantly extended by freedom that presents opportunities for a far richer fabric of living with a vitality known in much earlier years.
Without appearing cynical, perhaps Schopenhauer's "end state" or "ultimate goal" tor the Will is--total entropy!

i think schopenhauer adressed this with something like that once the sexual organs dont drive our decisions its all about eating. 🤭 Thats why old people who dont do much tend to be round.

Hegels philosophy is a dreadful misunderstanding of Plato. Now, psychoanalysis, which goes back to Plato, has rendered Hegel obsolete.
