- Unforgettable. Having taken the Betfair Chase by a hard-fought nose on his seasonal reapperance, plenty were thinking that Imperial Commander might be the one to dethrone Kempton king Kauto Star, but instead the Paul Nicholls-trained champion produced a simply brilliant performance to win by a record-breaking margin.
This victory saw him given a Timeform rating of 191, the highest given to a horse in almost 40 years and making him the joint-third highest-rated steeplechaser of all time.

My god. Watching this as a racing fan makes me speechless every time. I’ve never seen a horse perform so well at any track, and to demolish the field by 36 lengths, and win the race for the fourth year on the bounce and go on to maintain his title and win it for a fifth year in a row is such a feat. Amazing. What a horse.
Arkle won it by 40 lengths conceding a stone in weight to his rivals, the greatest racehorse if all time was Arkle .

The best horse I have ever seen. What he did over an extended period of time over distances between 2 and 3 miles 2 furlongs was a pleasure to witness. A racing great 6:25
Ruby Walsh didn't have to ask much of him, star does what stars does best. Ruby had just the right amount of confidence, not too over or under.. that makes this ride a fine one.
5:30 won't ever see a more alert jump. You can literally watch Kauto feel himself over the fence 😀 what a lad.

Absolutely exceptional
for me a true great ... 2 miles to 3 miles plus, including giving weight in H\caps and his durability over so many seasons, puts him on top by a long way .
Top horses don't hit fences or walk through them like this horse did. See him hit the 2nd last in the 2011 renewal for a typical example. Silver Buck would have eaten him and spat him out, he gave away more weight when winning handicaps too.
@@charliebear1436 the handicap argument is moot. Suppose the rest of the field here runs off 10st0lbs …. What happens? He still wins easily by multiple lengths. This remains the single greatest 3m chase performance I’ve ever seen and am likely to see in my lifetime

To be fair, Imperial Commander apart, and Alberta's Run who was a 2.5 miler, this was a race full of handicappers.
Those handicappers did well then winning all those graded races hey

Arkle won the king George there conceding 2 stone to his rivals....Kauto star never gave weight away and won , in fact both times he tried to he got beaten by the average monkerhostin and Monet's garden....he couldn't give those average horses a few pounds never mind stones, Arkle was giving previous gold cup winners over a stone and a 15 length beating, you need to go and study the great horse before making uneducated comments ......oh yes and Arkle still holds the track record today at sandown which he broke by 17 seconds in 1965, yes you read that correct, in 1965 😉

@@roberto4001000 You'd have to say Arkle because it's all there on record. The best three mile chaser I personally saw in the flesh was Silver Buck. He simply galloped the opposition into the ground and wasn't right in Bregawn's GC and should have been withdrawn IMO.
