Woodcarving Basics: Scallop Shell Excavation

Now that you've spent the time getting a scallop shell laid out ( • Woodcarving Basics: Sc... ) and you've practiced the various carving chisel cuts ( • Woodcarving Basics: Si... ), it's time to dive into the real thing. Before you start defining and refining the details, however, you need to do a little excavating.
In part 3 of this Woodcarving Basics series, I take you through how to excavate, or contour, the general shape of the shell. Most of the work is done with bench chisels, but if you want to give carving tools a shot, I'm okay with that too.
