I had a Yamaha TY80 and then a TY250 that I used to ride a mixture of trail, trials and motocross. It was a unique bike, low seat and not much suspension travel which I needed, being not tall... Miss that part of my life in my teens and early 20's on Long Island NY. I was lucky, out the backyard of our house and right onto the Lilco power line trails that went for miles with a motocross track made from an abandoned sandpit....
Thanks for letting me relive a great part of my childhood. My first bike was an XL75 so seeing that XR just made me smile! My XL never saw the road. The first thing I did was pull off all the lights (except the headlight) and such and make it into a dirt bike. I rode that thing from the time I woke up until it was too dark to see day after day all summer long for several years. It was some of the best times of my life. It's so cool to see others keeping that fun, excitement, and love alive.
Jamie, eventhough I haven't passed my exam for my driver's licence yet, you really really inspire me to put away my car and buy a bike. Thank you for sharing your love
When I was 15 I raced a (new at the time) 1978 RM 125. I loved everything about that bike, from being able to here it being kickstarted a half mile away to the super short power band, to the wonderful smell of burning Castrol pre-mix.
your description is a bit off,Yamaha did not come out with the YZ490 until 1982. the YZ465 came out in 1980 and 1981 and the YZ400 was made from 1976 to 1979.
2 Strokes, PROPER racing engine! Love the "On Any Sunday" feel with some of the camera work and the music. Nice product placement from Nissan, Dan Bedore will be happy.
Sold my soul at the age of 14 to go to work in a Honda / Suzuki shop. We still had 305 Dreams on the floor. Worked my first year for free. Stayed in it for over 20 years and can still be found in some of the shops I have worked in over the years. See you at Barber's this year. I bleed 2 stroke.
Also, the fact that this show does not feature vehicles that are so expensive that no one who watches it would ever be able to afford or even ever have the opportunity to drive makes me happy.
I just thought about when RideApart was going to make a video about dirtbikes when I was looking at the quad video for the 4th time 30 minutes ago. This is awesome, and you guys are awesome.
He talks all perty like on u them ferriners. True though, I gave up my 450, and am looking for an old bike. Calvmx is an AWESOME club, they put a lot of work into these races. The racers are wonderful people.
Every time I watch this show, I think, "I really need to get my motorcycle license, because this looks FUN." And then when the next episode airs, I feel ashamed because I haven't done it yet.
I'm a Husqy guy myself. Dad got me a 78? Suzuki RM50 when I was 5, learned me to use a clutch and ride. A year later, RM80. Rode that till I was 10. Dad went to a yard sale and found a Husq CR390 that an old guy was selling, it had water in the case but he got it for $30. A month later I was told to hop on (I'm still 10). I rode that bike for 2 years before it lost compression. We sold it and got a 74? Maico 250. Time to get another Husqy.
Great work with this one guys! Music fits the vibe perfectly. Brings me back to the days of learning to ride my first bike and having a blast with my buddies out in the dirt and trails!
They need to make a cheap, air cooled, big bore 2 stroke motocross bike. Something that is very affordable, durable, and easy to work on. Drop the high tech stuff and just make something cheap, powerful, and fun that anyone can afford to run. You know, like an entry level dirt bike.
Absolutely brilliant show... I've ridden once or twice in my life and this episode had browsing the classifieds for an old dirt bike. I may have just purchased a project CR125. Time to look for some gear!
Great episode, the music is fine although the volume of it needs to be adjusted down some... No need for your voice to compete with the music.. Thanks again for making such a quality program...
I remember my first ride on a two-stroke. I dropped the clutch at high RMP dropping from third to second and wound up on the ground five feet in front of the bike with some bent handlebars. It was the last time I got to ride an oil-burner.
im thinking about getting some classic 80s dirtbikes and restoring them like simple stuff resleeving cleaning carb air filter chain and giving them a all out clean and riding them because i fill restoring 80s and 70s bikes is alot of money and im more interested in 80s dirtbikes so tell me if im wrong please
Coming back strong, guys! Thx for a Ride down memory lane. Like many others, the music choice is cheesy and reeks of desperation. Motorcycles provide their own soundtrack so use the cheese sparingly.
I used to have an old yellow 50cc Yamaha when I was a kid. Step dad could never get that bitch started on the first 10 tries, but man I had a blast when it would start!
I had to stop watching at 1.32 because of that music. These lads are riding LUXURY. When started it was 4 inch travel suspension. I still have my 1974 Bultaco Pursang here in the Philippines. It had (has) 8 inch travel. A test of the day in a dirt bike magazine said, "If you can't win on this, you can't win on anything."
Sad that I sold my KTM495 but it was an oddity as it was a 495MX engine in an MXC frame. Thing was F'n explosive and I was never able to get anywhere near the top speeds in the upper gears. Sold it on EBAY and it would up going to Germany!
Same damn music the entire video, same chorus the entire video, great video guys but you could probably find some other vintage music than this 1 song right?
Jesus John R & pineapple John, makes me want to go find a can of Blendzall, and some gas, and fire up that beautiful pumpkin orange ' 72 Montesa Capra again! I love the smell of castor bean oil in the morning smells like heaven to me !!!

Lol, yep my first bike was an Xr75 from the mid seventies in the mid seventies. Best little kids bike ever made. Fun, fun, fun!
One of the best opening sequences on any video ever. The music, footage, and riders taking off in the title shot... Love this!
One of the best videos on TH-cam- bar none. Happy, joyous and addictive. Thanks.
Jamie, eventhough I haven't passed my exam for my driver's licence yet, you really really inspire me to put away my car and buy a bike. Thank you for sharing your love
even though i'm 15 years old and i ride a 250cc dirtbike, i still love to see races with old bikes likes these and see how the dirtbike has evolved
When I was 15 I raced a (new at the time) 1978 RM 125. I loved everything about that bike, from being able to here it being kickstarted a half mile away to the super short power band, to the wonderful smell of burning Castrol pre-mix.

Love It .. Good too see Old Bike still get out on the Track ....
VTR
Fun video! Reminds me of the pasture motocross races in Kansas back in the early 1970's! Thanks for the memories!
Also, the fact that this show does not feature vehicles that are so expensive that no one who watches it would ever be able to afford or even ever have the opportunity to drive makes me happy.

Great work here Jamie, Wes and everyone else involved. Brings back alot of great memories
Gotta love vintage MX,.....LOVE IT MAN!!!
Nice to see the Fly'n Hawaiian still involved with the sport that made him famous.
He talks all perty like on u them ferriners. True though, I gave up my 450, and am looking for an old bike. Calvmx is an AWESOME club, they put a lot of work into these races. The racers are wonderful people.
I haven't ridden a motorcycle in 35 years.......this show is seriously making me re-think that. Kids are grown up....why the hell not :-)
YES!! This gave us a taste at how on the edge motocross is
Every time I watch this show, I think, "I really need to get my motorcycle license, because this looks FUN." And then when the next episode airs, I feel ashamed because I haven't done it yet.

Love these RideApart videos. Keep em coming.
i love what you guys are doing this season! keep it up
I love this show...and i like the music too.
I was there when you filmed this, what a fun day! It was my first day back to racing in 30 years! Great video, I really enjoyed it!

This really is motocross, have fun and enjoy bikes before and with the best sound.
This episode was awesome!
Absolutely brilliant show... I've ridden once or twice in my life and this episode had browsing the classifieds for an old dirt bike. I may have just purchased a project CR125. Time to look for some gear!
Jamie, my first bike was an '81 YZ100! That 490 must be a beast! I love the old two strokes!
So glad rideapart is back!
Fav RideApart so far!
Great video and great music to go along with it!!!
jeezy that matchless bike is like riding a hardtail with that suspension travel
What is the name of the song?
Great episode, the music is fine although the volume of it needs to be adjusted down some... No need for your voice to compete with the music..
Thanks again for making such a quality program...
A oldschool YZ400 is not what I'd call a gentle intro to dirt :-D
must of been sooo fun. be cool to ride some of those old bikes.
I remember my first ride on a two-stroke. I dropped the clutch at high RMP dropping from third to second and wound up on the ground five feet in front of the bike with some bent handlebars. It was the last time I got to ride an oil-burner.
I will be doing this SOOOOOON! I cannot wait!
Great episodes... Can you also review some current motorcycles and give out some buyer's guide knowledge/opinion on them please
this is my favorite drive program
With this music and the sound of the 2 strokes, it's like i'm playing GTA Vice City again :D
just remembered how all this show did was review bikes or equipment. from a non riders point of view i like where this is headed
im thinking about getting some classic 80s dirtbikes and restoring them like simple stuff resleeving cleaning carb air filter chain and giving them a all out clean and riding them because i fill restoring 80s and 70s bikes is alot of money and im more interested in 80s dirtbikes so tell me if im wrong please
best feature on Drive!!!
old but gold bro ;)
damn, i wish there where tracks like this here in italy, i would spend my weekend riding 24h/day...
Looks like a ton of fun.
Coming back strong, guys! Thx for a Ride down memory lane. Like many others, the music choice is cheesy and reeks of desperation. Motorcycles provide their own soundtrack so use the cheese sparingly.
AWESOME I DIG I DIG I DIG!! Wes is in for five seconds and there was an advertisement for a nissan truck hmm?
socal motoing i miss this hope to be back soon
I want that '78 Maico like you don't even know! I mean, I love my '82 Husky to bits, but it's just not a Maico.
7 years later, I now have a '79 Maico 440 in the garage next to the Husky. Bucket list achievement!
Looked a great day 👍👍👍🏴✌️😜
I have yz 250 3R4 1980.Gretting from croatia

Thanks CALVMX!! Awesome times!
looks like a lot of fun.
cool episode!
I used to have an old yellow 50cc Yamaha when I was a kid. Step dad could never get that bitch started on the first 10 tries, but man I had a blast when it would start!
should get some of these new school 4stroke riders out on a vmx piston ported 2stroker see how they handle the ruts?
I'd do it! :-)
He's actually racing in the Post-Vintage class.
and now i m on craigslist looking for a vintage bike
good show. less cheesy music. Those 2 strokes are music enough
Haters gonna hate. Great video.
I had to stop watching at 1.32 because of that music. These lads are riding LUXURY. When started it was 4 inch travel suspension. I still have my 1974 Bultaco Pursang here in the Philippines. That music reminds me of the film vanishing point check it out you youngsters
where are they riding??looks so cal,but where?
I wish Yamaha still made these still...
Keep an eye on those sound levels boys :) .. my ears nearly shit themselves a few times there
who's brought stripes and bright stars...through the perilous BRAAAAAAAAP!
every time i start my echo trimmer i think about 2 strokes bikes
Nice to see Wes again. Mist him on the other 2 episodes
added to bucket list :D
Long live the two stroke !!
Who knows what song this is? I love funk/soul like this
You enjoy bees in your ears?
No thanks...The ONLY thing memorable about the 2 stroke era was the delicious smoke!!!
Sad that I sold my KTM495 but it was an oddity as it was a 495MX engine in an MXC frame. Thing was F'n explosive and I was never able to get anywhere near the top speeds in the upper gears. Sold it on EBAY and it would up going to Germany!
Whats the backgroud music? does anyone know?
Does anyone know what is that song? btw great video =)
Loved it.
Why no yz80? Best bike ever made small light fast and cheep
We're there any makos
Where is this at l live in California..
campo I think
the good old scrambler.
This Brit is pretty fast..
Yeah I reckon he did good
No such thing as a 1979 YZ 490... They did make a YZ 400.
Same damn music the entire video, same chorus the entire video, great video guys but you could probably find some other vintage music than this 1 song right?
Hey theres De Soto
Great info, great vid.....could do without the music.
gremmann Yeah maybe something without lyrics if you're going to loop it for 11mins
I can tell that they set their mic gain too high, hence cheesy music and sound effects for the bikes.
Love the video. What's up with that awful music?
if you aint mixing gas you aint hauling ass!
Cool video. Id rather hear th bikes then that cheezy music
Jesus John R & pineapple John, makes me want to go find a can of Blendzall, and some gas, and fire up that beautiful pumpkin orange ' 72 Montesa Capra again! I love the smell of castor bean oil in the morning smells like heaven to me !!!
Rare
chimneyswift sent me
The guy with the husquarna bike needs to learn how to say it right.
Pretty sure Wes chose the cheesy music
