I came upon a squirrel camp once but the little critters were so skittish, they took off leaving the coffee boiling and the bacon in the pan on the fire.
I grew up hunting like this in the late 70's and 80's as a kid and my family still hunts like this.. In 3 weeks we will be off to deer camp 4 generations hunting and camping this way...
Fantastic, interesting video! 👏 Yes, please continue with the squirrel camp videos. They remind of going to northern Michigan as a kid with my Dad camping for the small game opener. So much fun it was. Latter, in my 40's i tried to do a fall camp that we called: "Fins and feathers weekend" were some friends and i would go camping during the small game opener and last week of the trout fishing season. We would trout fish, and hunt: squirrels, rabbits, grouse and woodcock. Very fine eats for sure. Unfortunately we all got busy with our lives and quit going. Your video has inspired me to bring everyone together and make the time to go again. After all life is too short to miss out on fellowship and adventure like a fins and feathers weekend tradition. I absolutely LOVE 20th Century Adventures and Waypoint!!! Nathaniel was the first person I thought of when I saw the thumbnail. I've watched his squirrel hunt several times! Ha
Great collaboration fellas! Love the old culture and it's great to see it alive and well. Not to mention the timeless simplicity of the previous generations gear that continues to be a staple in survival.
I knew when I saw James he was gonna be set. I love the Hobo series. Quarter for a call....Sir your telling your age lol. All of the gear was really cool!
I'm so envious of you all! Great adventure. Here in Finland squirrell hunting was huge until 1950's when the fur prices crashed. So much so that the hunting season for squirrels was very short and around Christmas. Not to protect squirrell population but to keep workers at work! When season started, most of the logging camps, mines and even farms lost their workers because everybody went after squirrells, it paid so much better. BTW, 4 squirrells was considered a decent meal for a man. 😀 I noticed that most of you are using shotguns. Was that a common practice or is it because of the regulations? Here the most common weapon was a .22, usually short, was cheaper than LR. Most often some cheap single shot. Like my Winchester m67. Of course you hunted with what you had...
What a wonderful time. I’d seriously considered putting the pedal to the metal to build my impression and gear load out so as to participate in Squirrel Camp 2024. But I’m the project manager of a fairly intense residential home rebuild after a house fire earlier this year. And it’s my moms home. Gotta stay on task. Just could not justify being anywhere other than here until new drywall is up. That’s not for another 2-3 weeks. Turns out it was a Godshot because after seeing the care and attention to detail that these outstanding youtubers invested in honoring the period, mine would’ve been beneath my true capabilities. Maybe kissing cousins close to slipshod due to lack of prep time. So having considered heading out-really gone back n forth for several weeks bout it-when buzz started to build last summer, seeing these videos is the next best thing. I sincerely pray that God’s will is accomplished a week from today and that in so doing the following 9-10 months are good to many more people. Economically. Professionally. Spiritually. So that they could perhaps participate in Squirrel Camp 2025. Dave, Sean you are men among men. I tip my Montana Peak to you. Along with Sarge, James and others you provided some great people the opportunity to get away, focus elsewhere and interface on a more valuable level with youtubers who are long admired. Greatly appreciated for what they selflessly and consistently bring. Great content that’s (ironically) brimming with love. God bless us all.

Great video and would love to see a part two. I’m in the UK and building out a kit inspired by my great uncle. He served in WW1, survived and then travelled extensively, living overseas for many years. He was in China when the Japanese invaded in WW2.

Great video, Dave it can be used for cutting sounds, resonating chamber is for barking. The groove on the opposite end of the striker is to straighten edge of the reed after it had some miles on it. Good work traveler
