Both have been common cards in tempo rogue since beta, sap in particular is one of the highest tempo cards ever printed since it allows you to spend just 2 mana (0 with prep) to not just remove any minion and the mana your opponent spent playing it but also force them to spend that mana again if they want to put it back into play which makes them fall even further behind.
With most decks turn 2 play a 2 drop makes sense. But this deck is a combo deck so it makes sense to hold aprentice often, so that you can play many spells like firebat did. It could of gone horribly wrong but this is a game of chance, so that can always happen no matter what.
