Alkanes: Crash Course Organic Chemistry #6

  • Alkanes are kind of the wallflowers of organic chemistry, but they still have important functions in the world around us. In this episode of Crash Course Organic Chemistry we’re building our knowledge of organic molecules by learning all about these so called couch potatoes from how they are separated from crude oil to how to use Newman projections to predict torsional strain and steric hinderance. We’ll also learn the names of some common conformers and get an introduction to cycloalkanes.

As a organic chemistry and biochemistry educational content creator, I love seeing the stylistic and creative approuches crash course has been taking with *Organic Chemistry* so from one nerd, to another. Thank you so much

I'm not a chemist, but my impression is that the hands-on-molecule discussion here could help a future organic chemist navigate reaction rates and activation energies at least partly by intuition. Silicon chemistry naturally takes a lot of this into account by numerical analysis, Monte Carlo methods, relaxation and so forth, but getting it into the chemist's mind could be valuable, I'd think, in planning a synthesis or estimating which way a reaction would run.

Thank you soo much . At high school I never really understood Newman projections and torsional strain because I couldn't visualise these . Due to that I was struggling in college with more advanced topics like medical chemistry. This helped a lottt

Hey! I dont understand can a eclipsed conformer not just simply rotate a little bit to become staggered?
Or... do you have to supply/take energy to the compound to do so...
    I need an answer! hELp!!

  • @AdityaMehendale

The energy-difference between the "totally eclipsed" vs. "anti" configurations is ~ 19kJ/mol 8:37. Does this mean that exposure to (far-infrared) light of wavelength 6um shall excite the "anti" molecules to a "totally eclipsed" state? (and that this molecule is transparent to light of shorter wavelengths?)
