This is a great looking little car. There are millions of Camry/ES, Accord/TL, not to mention a trillion Civics, but hardly any ILX (it's a completely new vehicle...), so you get a fresh new look.
I bought this car recently, and its great. Sure you could get an accord, but do you want a bigger body car? This car is stylish, smooth & agile. Sure you could get a Honda Si, but lets be real.. Your not turning any heads in that. Personally I like that it has the Si motor because you get a quality motor that will last. + Style Points + Longevity
@soyntogo4it, It's all in good fun (regarding the music) and the engine, well, it's the "start up & exhaust note" portion of the video. I hope you enjoyed the other 7 minutes of the review. Thanks for watching. Did you spot Superman? - Dave
Dave- I don't consider myself a car enthusiast per se (more truck/motorcycle) but I really like the side profile of this ILX. So many mfr's are cramming vehicle bodies with so much visual detail, compounded angularities...flowing lines that don't mesh with overall silhouette... busy for the sake of looking busy. This ILX looks mature, but still athletic. A lot of people still find the older Preludes still contemporary in styling.
This car is too closely priced to the Honda Accord. Slower, smaller, worse mpg and premium fuel. Didnt see a lane watch feature. For that size it should be either sportier or more fuel efficient than the Honda Accord and it is neither.
@harjeet singh, first of all, thank you for subscribing. Secondly, sorry you were bored. Lastly, I produce car reviews, not commentary reviews. Please watch a few more of my latest reviews to develop a better understanding of my style and format - Dave
I just test drove this model, but 2014. I found my tsx to be a lot more smoother than the ilx. It has the same engine as mine and lighter, but the drive just seemed different. Also, I have never driven a civic si, but the ilx has a stiff and aggressive feel much like most of acura's models. It does have some nice equipment; camera and push-start ignition standard. However, the car does have a lot of plastic components with its interior, along with no dual power seats. :/. I would suggest buying this car over a civic still, but not the tsx, which is sadly discontinued after 2014. Hope this comment will help future buyers. 2007 Honda accord 2008 Acura tsx 2011 Acura tsx 2014 Acura tsx
This is a great car even now in 2024 I had my 2013 ILX since new and it’s still super fun super reliable zippy anc handles like a champ. They don’t make them like this anymore No CVT the little engine is so satisfying to push a real Honda/Acura Classic. I only have 50k miles on mine but these are known to last fo 500k miles. A lot of kids drive them and crash them so they are harder to find in good condition
Great Review. I really like how Dave talks about the steering response and feel and goes into detail of the everyday aspects of the car. I like that he addresses this market segment in the new automobile market, I think quality truthful reviews like yourselves with really help consumers make more informed decisions. I kindly ask you for more time in convenience features (ipod connection, Bluetooth), seat positioning, trunk space, and performance specs. But either case, thank you for your work.
So the ILX still gets some criticism. I get it. But I have a 2013 6mt ILX and I can tell you that this car is actually a LOT of fun to drive every day. If you love to drive, how exactly is an Accord a better choice? Mine is Crystal Black Pearl which looks much better than that grey colour. It's got excellent real world fuel economy, has an amazing transmission (which Dave didn't even touch on), has lots of features and I know it will never leave me stranded. Overall very pleased with my car
@LiHao8377, no, no 0-60 tests.. at least not yet. If the Everyman Driver Nation WANTS to see 0-60 mph test, then maybe I'll invest in the necessary equipment - Dave
I'm in the market for a car again, and to be fair, I also drove the comparable '14 Buick Verano. I know this is going to infuriate Acura fans, but the Buick had it nailed down for this segment. For the money, the tech, the style, comfort and performance, the Buick seemed to have the advantage. In truth, I didn't know if I wanted it to, but it did, so that's what I'm leaning toward. It's not that the ILX doesn't have its selling points--I think the exterior is sharp--but overall, it disappoints.
Yeah, I bought the TSX instead of the ILX. The TSX is really where the true Acura experience begins. For a 5 speed automatic it is incredibly smooth, has brisk acceleration and gets decent mpg.
Yeah i'm fully aware of what the rev limiter is for it to keep from damaging the engine, but you still should be able to rev it in park up to 7000 redline is not going to damage it when reving over 4500 rpm in park(as long it is broken in already) thats is a weird setup.
I'm in the market for a new car. I tested both the TSX and the ILX back to back. Their prices do overlap somewhat, so I decided to look at both cars. I was disappointed to say the least the ILX does not come with a modern 6 or 7 speed automatic. I can overlook this glaring omission on the TSX because it is an older design, but still 6 speeds at least. At the end of my own testing, I consider the TSX the superior car. It is far more refined, quieter, smoother, a true luxury car.
Was great how you showed headroom and kneeroom from inside the cabin. The images from 4:30 to 5:10 while they were filmed well and showed relevant parts of the car, it did become a bit lengthy. Would have worked better with some sort of speak over it. Great job, though!
what people aren't getting is that buying a car isn't just about sticker price. It's about the finiance/lease rate, too! If I can get a brand new Acura over an Accord for the same payment, I'm choosing the Acura. To each his own, I suppose :)
I love this car I honestly think its one of the best looking card out right now especially in black on black with the optional 17inch wheels tough tough car
Good review. Would like to see more reviews on the 2l car, I personally have a euro accord equipped with the same motor as that one has and I absolutely love it. I have previously owned 3 2.4l versions both manual and auto and love them too(manual especially) sadly we do not get the acura so Honda Accord it is for me.
When you opened up the center column cubby, there was, what looked like, a while connector of some sort, with a wire attached to it. Could you elaborate a bit more on what this is? It looks a bit tacky, and un thought out for a premium vehicle
Dave shines 10x as much when he is on his own. Although I dont always love the stock music choises. Yes! Another Alex the Aryan-less video! If you want to see him you can catch him at the Spokane Chuckle Hut or caddying at the local 9-hole pitch n' putt. PLEASE TELL ME THAT DUDE IS GONE!
Dave, have you had a chance to test the 2013 Civic? I wonder how the EX-L would stack up against the ILX, now that Honda has corrected many of the 2012 Civic's deficiencies? As much as I think the ILX is OK, it just doesn't seem to be that much nicer than the Civic EX-L - at least to justify the spread in price.
I'm so confused on whether I should get a 2014 Honda Civic si or the 2013 Acura ILX 2.4.. I really like both cars a lot! I just want a sporty, fun to drive, reliable car that'll last me a while
@view52, there's been a good mix of weather during my video reviews but lately it's been hit & miss with the rain. I live in Eastern Washington / North Idaho - Dave
GREAT NEWS everyone: The refreshed 2016 ILX will have the 201 hp 2.4 L engine available with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. So 'FINALLY' it will have a decent amount of power in a nice small car that's the size of a Civic, for someone who doesn't want a large sized car like that of an Accord. (and doesn't want the digital dash of the Civic.)
It would be very difficult for me to pick this over an Si sedan, TSX Special Edition, or even the Accord Sport. It's far too expensive for what it is, just a luxo Civic. For the nearly the same money you can get the Accord EX-L V6!
can you also do a review on the 2013 genesis coupe 2.0T r-spec? it seems most reviews on here are for the 3.8 engine. i think more people are going to buy the 2.0T rather than the 3.8.
You should probably have more commentary during the videos. There is a lot of footage of the vehicle, but no commentary to go along with it. It bores the viewer because it is almost the same as viewing pics of the vehicle. This is supposed to be a review so it should include input from you.
The 2014 Acura Civic! I can't figure out why Acura brought this model to light? Especially since there is already the TSX. The TSX is a much better car for only a few thousand dollars more. Acura needs to X this model out.
Drive a 2005 RSX TYPE S so reliability is great w Acura. However, this car clearly depicts an expensive civic. The motors are so so. Overall, cars w more power get better gas mileage than this car such as bmw 328. I understand that bmw 328 is more expensive but this cars price isn't that cheap around 27-29k. Sorry Acura but not feeling this one. When people say for the money you can get something else I feel this is a prime example of that.
I think Acura should quit selling this in US and start selling in Japan! It's got just the right size for Japanese roads, very appealing engine size(really expensive tax in Japan) with fair amounts of power
Have to agree with Dave. Get the Accord. ILX is overpriced and under-powered just for the Acura badge. Accord Sport = an incredible value. Spending 30K in a 6MT ILX puts you in a new V6 Accord EXL
Freeda Birda lol actually, I have a 2010 Honda Civic Coupe. Before that, I had a 1999 Acura 2.3 CL. I agree with you that, for reliability reasons, I too would rather have a Honda over a Chevy. I'm just saying that of the Japanese luxury brands, with their availability of V8 engines and RWD, Lexus and Infiniti were always more luxury than Acura. Example: except for The ES (with is a dressed up Camry-a GREAT car by the way), the rest of the Lexus line(IS, GS and LS) actually CAN compete with BMW or Mercedes when it comes to luxury/performance. Can't say the same for Acura. Even the top Acura, the RLX, is still a dressed up Accord(another GREAT car but not in BMW territory). Why did I get an 1999 Acura CL at the time then? I DIDN'T buy it for the purpose of having a "luxury" car. I got it just because it was different. I loved the "alien eyes" tail lights. Even though, it was basically a fancier Accord, I didn't want a common car that's everywhere. The CL was more rare than an Accord. But to be taken seriously as a "luxury" brand, I've always felt GREAT sporty cars like the Integra/RSX cheapened the Acura name(nothing luxurious about them) and felt they should've been sold as Hondas. The ILX is an improvement over the old Acura EL and CSX (they shared almost all the same body panels with a Civic), but still too Civic-like(FWD and underpowered) to compete with the 3 series, C-Class or Lexus IS. But still a very reliable car and it will have good resale value.
The interior seems pretty lacking in substance, seems spartan for a luxury brand, reminds me of a Civic or Corolla, I didn't see even a piece of wood (faux or real) or brushed aluminum. The instrument cluster is something out of a Dodge Caravan, nothing special there. Dear Acura: Not sure if this was a good idea. You should've added a trim level to a Honda instead of creating a whole new Acura model. Not even mention your putting in a 150 HP 4 cylinder into a luxury brand vehicle, that in and of itself is strange.
No split rear in this car? How is it I can get a split rear in the Civic EX or EX-L, but not this car? That said, they are doing the same thing on the Accords: no split rears on any trim. I would just go buy the Civic EX-L instead of paying an extra $2000 for an Acura badge. Not worth it.
Interesting review about a not very interesting car. When Honda created Acura it was supposed to be a luxury division. Too many Acuras are now little more than re-badged Hondas and this seriously detracts from the luxury image the brand is trying to create. IMHO the only Acura worthy of note was the NSX.
Why would I waste money on a badge reengineered Honda Civic. I can just get a Honda Civic Si and save myself some money. Acura really dropped the ball on building, marketing and selling this POS.
It's not a bad car, but I really expect more from Acura. The exterior design (subjective) is lacking and isn't screaming out to me wow. The interior is smartly laid out and has premium materials, but doesn't say luxury. I expect Acura to deliver a more premium experience rather than really becoming just a more expensive Honda like another commenter put it.
You think all that's bad? You should take one out for a test drive, then you will see what real disappointment is! Choppy ride, underpowered (base engine), noisy, no head room. The sad part is that this was their "effort" to bring a small car to market.
I should add that in Canada, they did have two previous attempts at a Civic-based car, the 1.7EL and the CSX. Those were much more closely related to the Civic, so that almost made them excusable (I liked the 1.7EL for some reason). Honda/Acura with the ILX was supposedly aiming for something a lot higher, and the looks no longer match the Civic's, and because of that it seems much more disappointing. The Civic is probably a better car; the Accord is DEFINITELY a better car.
This is a great looking little car. There are millions of Camry/ES, Accord/TL, not to mention a trillion Civics, but hardly any ILX (it's a completely new vehicle...), so you get a fresh new look.

Just bought one of these today. It's very nice.
what other similar cars did you look at before this ILX?
Elijah B Looking at getting this... or an audi a3... Or a mercedes benz cla.
This car is too closely priced to the Honda Accord. Slower, smaller, worse mpg and premium fuel. Didnt see a lane watch feature. For that size it should be either sportier or more fuel efficient than the Honda Accord and it is neither.

Thanks for hitting the rev limiter that was great
Also do some high speed runs up to 140mph
Best gear box/shifter I've ever used btw

Exterior look awesome......good exterior design
@honda tech tip, ahhh, that's right. I'm usually taking the pov from OUTSIDE the car. I'll remember that for next time. Thank you - Dave
Yeah, I bought the TSX instead of the ILX. The TSX is really where the true Acura experience begins. For a 5 speed automatic it is incredibly smooth, has brisk acceleration and gets decent mpg.
@towncaptian7, you are correct. I was referring to the Civic Si I reviewed. Thank you for the added information - Dave
@jcabigjc, you must have X-ray vision to spot Superman in the wheel. Nice work - Dave
Great review. I think the dash looks outdated. In my opinion, the new accord looks better
Hi Dave, In Canada, the 2014 ILX dynamic comes with tech package, with a large screen for navi. Cheers.
Yeah i'm fully aware of what the rev limiter is for it to keep from damaging the engine, but you still should be able to rev it in park up to 7000 redline is not going to damage it when reving over 4500 rpm in park(as long it is broken in already) thats is a weird setup.

Good review once again, Dave.

I prefer this one rather than Accord in my country! Love this engine.
Great review! Can you do a review on the Focus ST?
the rev limiter is set at 45k rpm only when reving...in driving..u can redline at 7000rpm...prevents damage to the engine...
I love this car I honestly think its one of the best looking card out right now especially in black on black with the optional 17inch wheels tough tough car

Thank you for going to a longer format video, 5 minutes just isn't enough to review a car.
There is three way to open the trunk not just two. Driver floor, trunk and keyless remote
@view52, there's been a good mix of weather during my video reviews but lately it's been hit & miss with the rain. I live in Eastern Washington / North Idaho - Dave
The ILX is a very good model for that price tag

Where was the FIRST place you spotted Superman? The second place was much more obvious than the first :-) - Dave
I like the funky music at the begiining. :D
I almost bought this car but I ended up going with the 2014 Honda Accord v6 coupe touring
Good
I'm not sure how you could "almost" buy this car if you were looking at a V6 Accord. The Accord blows this piece of garbage out of the water.
Just picked one up for under 15K with 46,000 km's on it. What a fun little car to drive. Definitely not worth 30K tho.
Where was this filmed? Its so pretty
Great review Dave! I need to checkout the video again. I didn't spot superman. lol

is this awd?
@DrBrainrape - you know it! - Dave
Can you do a review on the tlx?
@PhreshNBeat, the best I can do is put in a request with my fleet manager - Dave
can you do a review on the Subaru brz and scion fr-s, plz?
Drive a 2005 RSX TYPE S so reliability is great w Acura. However, this car clearly depicts an expensive civic. The motors are so so. Overall, cars w more power get better gas mileage than this car such as bmw 328. I understand that bmw 328 is more expensive but this cars price isn't that cheap around 27-29k. I think Acura should quit selling this in US and start selling in Japan! It's got just the right size for Japanese roads, very appealing engine size(really expensive tax in Japan) with fair amounts of power
If i want to get a civic... I would get a civic...
But this one is CIVIC platform?
I test drove the ILX, but choose the Accord EXL.
i want this car with rear wheel drive and brembo brakes.so that'd be everyman car.
Have to agree with Dave. Get the Accord. ILX is overpriced and under-powered just for the Acura badge. Accord Sport = an incredible value. Spending 30K in a 6MT ILX puts you in a new V6 Accord EXL
Thank you so much
ey dave, the civic si comes with 4 doors too you know lol
That ACURA lettering in the center console is so tacky. lol either way, nice car.
No 0 -60 ?
Great video, very informative.
Darn! I had to do a 2nd partial viewing to find Superman!
Only 201 HP? What a Eco friendly car
Just turn the car on and rev it that high?
Why is the exhaust tip hiding on a luxury car?
So it could look fuel efficient... Really thats the reason... :)
A dressed up Honda Civic. The Cadillac Cimarron of Japanese "luxury" cars.
Freeda Birda amen
But still a very reliable car and it will have good resale value.
Marshall Street true.
The Accord does make better sense
Not the same engine as the si, but both engines look similar
The interior seems pretty lacking in substance, seems spartan for a luxury brand, reminds me of a Civic or Corolla, I didn't see even a piece of wood (faux or real) or brushed aluminum. The instrument cluster is something out of a Dodge Caravan, nothing special there. Dear Acura: Not sure if this was a good idea. You should've added a trim level to a Honda instead of creating a whole new Acura model. Not even mention your putting in a 150 HP 4 cylinder into a luxury brand vehicle, that in and of itself is strange.
I love that Acura keeps it old school and simple. I still remember my Integra.
Please do not get this POS car. Honda seriously needs to revamp the entire Acura sedans.
They just did with the new re-freshed ILX and the TLX. The TLX is actually a really great car. Very practical and sensible.
The engine isn't all that spectacular in the Honda Civic SI...What makes honda think it will be great in a luxury car?
No offense to other guy but I think Everyman Driver is better with just Dave.
I will not buy the new tlx if they continue with this no exhaust tip non sense
To be fair, you can't see the exhaust tip (or lack there off) from the driver seat.
When you test driving honda civic si 2014
Interesting review about a not very interesting car. When Honda created Acura it was supposed to be a luxury division. Too many Acuras are now little more than re-badged Hondas and this seriously detracts from the luxury image the brand is trying to create.
IMHO the only Acura worthy of note was the NSX.
Honda killed the beloved Integra DC5 and replace it with this execrable rubbish?
funny the civic ex-l has more luxury with features the ilx doesnt even offer
Why would I waste money on a badge reengineered Honda Civic. I can just get a Honda Civic Si and save myself some money. Acura really dropped the ball on building, marketing and selling this POS.
Yeah, I agree. This thing is terrible. 9.7 second 0-60? Pathetic!
***** Yes they should kill the 2.0L... the 2.4L does 0-60 in 6.3! Much better.
The HONDA ACCORD V-6 runs CIRCLES around this ACURA (how unfortunate) thats LIFE!
SORRY; The new MAZDA3 looks and performs way better, for about half the price.
why would you get this car when you can get an accord with more power and luxury for less price.
Because the person shopping for this isnt looking at a car as big as the Accord. And they want the bells and whisle of Acura.
@carlcook58, I think I have one more growth spurt left in me :-) Dave
that's too much money for a re-badged civic. just get a civic si and call it a day.
Lol. Acura gives 0 fucks these days. They didn't even try while designing this car. Exterior and interior wise it is seriously lagging.
You ducking face is lagging shut up shitbag
Agree. The exterior does not appeal at all. It looks way too generic. Does not feel as ergonomic as it should be.
You think all that's bad? You should take one out for a test drive, then you will see what real disappointment is! Choppy ride, underpowered (base engine), noisy, no head room.
The sad part is that this was their "effort" to bring a small car to market.
Yes not sure how they hire the engineers to do the jobs.
