I cannot accept that we lost this utter giant of. music. He gave and gave and gave and was so nice doing. He showcased so many great players , especially the drummers. Vinnie eats this up an he's also a giant in music . The music world is empty without Chick. RIP up where you are.
Chick was one of those artists that you thought would go on and on...he kept me entertained with his daily Instagram lockdown blogs...the jazz community might never recover from his loss...he will be eternally missed. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
RIP maestro, this simply change my life and the way I perceive the music. Very painful lost today, thanks you for EVER Chick. Your music will never die.
Just never gets old, maybe the greatest dep performance of all time from Vinnie? RIP Chick, you can see the love he had for the drums here, he always hired the best.
some may think that Vinnie is overplaying here. i agree that his parts are quite busy, however it is absolutely not for the reason most would think (showing off). Vinnie is not only one of the greatest drummers to ever play, but also one of the greatest ACCOMPANISTS. Frank Zappa loved playing with him because when he was soloing with Vinnie behind him, Vinnie had an almost telepathic sense of Zappa's ideas. Zappa did not always play his solos in time; they floated in and around the pulse, not always metric. what he loved about Vinnie is that he was able to respond to Zappa's wildly irregular figures and phrases, while still being able to keep track of the pulse. here, all of the figures that Vinnie is playing are direct reflections and interpretations of Chick's figures and phrases. you have to really tune in to what they both are doing, but if you listen closely, the borderline telepathic sense that Vinnie has is undeniable. with Chick here (or any renowned melodic soloist), playing with Vinnie must be one of the most satisfying things ever. IMAGINE playing a solo, and having someone basically READ your MIND, take the ideas that you have, internalize and reflect on them, and add to them another layer that makes your solo even richer. for geniuses like Chick, Zappa, and Herbie, playing with Vinnie must be like a drug. that's my interpretation of what is going on here.
Dog you need to listen to that whole "Now He Sings Now he Sobs"LP because this drummer isn't as hip (playing like this at least) as Roy Haynes was. Roy was uncanny organic..excuse me My ears are bleeding.
Vinnie is overplaying here because thats what he thinks the song needs, and it sounds absolutely great and amazing, if you can see the reaction on Chick's and John's faces. That's why there's what we call "justice" in Music. Now if Vinnie does this on a Kenny G song, that would be different. lol
Its like what Joe Z said to Peter Erskine on his first WR gig when he was playing telepathically...don't ever do that again. Vinny was a good reader that's what Zappa wanted from all his musicians.
@@manuelergcruz exactly! a great example of Vinnie's in-the-pocket playing is his performance in Songs And Visions (Wembley Stadium '97). i normally don't listen to pop unless it's infused with jazz, but his playing is so tasty that it made me watch that whole concert several times 😂
I say enjoy every moment of this performance because it will be a long time before you can find a composer , performer and improviser like Chick, he just pulls things out of the air like only a very few guys can do and make something out of nothing.
No one has commented on it because it doesn't seem like Vinnie missed anything. Both him and John are smiling at each other at the awesome stuff Chick is playing and they let Chick lead them in. Love the humorous lick right before cue the head.
No one here is talking about these changes..geez. you know all that fusion stuff from the 70s most of the solo formats were static harmonically because you know Dimiola and Clark back then might have struggled with a tune like this. Notice on Mad Hatter the Bassist is Eddie Gomez. Soloing on this tune is about hard as Giant Steps.
As a bass player Vinny is overplaying with no dynamics and too much reliance on the cymbals. Watch the Acoustic Band at the Malta Jazz Festival to see what drumming should be doing for this song...
Well look... As a drummer, and someone who grew up idolizing both Weckl and Colaiuta, as well as worshiping Chick's Akoustic Band - I don't like Vinnie's playing in this particular trio instance. That is to say: I think it's too in-front. Still, the man is OBVIOUSLY playing with dynamics, and he's brilliant. For all we YTubers know, Chick told him to go nuts, for whatever reason. I guess I'm just saying that it's one thing to not like the performance, but it's quite another "as a bass player" to say something objectively false about it.
Vinnie approaches Traditional Jazz like a metal drummer. Too much power and chops. Not enough swing or taste. Being busy as a drummer is one thing; but just making noise under the guise of being busy is another. His drumming on this is absolutely exhausting.
I'm not sure if it's only about being White. Joe Morello and Peter Erskine come to mind as a tasteful White Jazz drummers. I love Vinnie too, but this is too much.
I love the honesty and rawness of Roy Haynes' playing on Chick's 1981 Live in Montreux recording. Vinnie is a sick ticket, and he is one of my favourites. I wonder if he would have played this show any differently today, or would he have the same "aesthetic"... I would think not ... space adds great tension and Roy nails it. I love how Chick sees the beauty of different drummers, being a drummer himself.
Yes but then he wouldn't be Vinnie would he and of course things would change as again, it wouldn't be Vinnie it would be Kennedy!!! Just enjoy it for what it is, not what it isn't. If you listen to the album "Alive", it's different again and guess what, Weckl is white!!!
Oh yeah? Find a 'Metal Drummer' that can play those phrases.. Yeah that's what I thought. Exhausting? Maybe, for certain ears.. But absolutely mind-blowing. Vinnie will be (and always should be) himself.. and alien from another planet. haha.
What an unbelievable loss. Things will never be the same without him. We were lucky to have lived through his time on this planet.
Rest easy, Chick.

John's facial demeanor from 3:20-3:27 equals me, reacting throughout and to the entirety of this masterful performance.

No one's commented on Vinnie missing the intro cue? I love it...he looks sheepishly to Chick and he repeats the phrase...perfecto!

it would be great if someone can upload this concert in good quality like this video. There is a complete here on youtube but in poor quality.
+Nico Asinari I`ll try to upload the full show tonight. It`s a gem.
+Mario Mario thanks man, it will be great if you can do that, thanks for all
+Nico Asinari It will take some hours but i`m on it. You`re welcome.
One of those strange moments when someone says something on internet and then he does it. Thanks for the opload! @Mario Mario
Harvey Mason's playing remains the absolute best version of this tune. Hands down!!!
Colaiuta venía del gym?
Si, después se fumo un cigarro
Escuché que estaba reemplazando a Dave Weckl a corto plazo.
It´s not music it´s workout

loud is loud and as a bass player I rarely play with drummers that know what dynamics are and how to contribute that to the song :-(
@@bassmonk2920 sounds like a you problem
I don't agree.
@@bassmonk2920 Ah kick the drummer time!
