The bit about Daphne becoming a badass without losing her femininity reminds me of one of my favorite scenes in the sequel: the gang is stuck in a trap, so Daphne pulls out her makeup kit and uses it to trick the fingerprint scanner. "I love being a girl."
I reentacted exactly that during those play times youd have where youd just pretend to be doing things as a group- we weren't even reenacting the movie together i was just a dweeb n did it. I don't know why that memory is still with me but it is lol
I did not think the Scooby Doo Live Action movie would end up on my list of "this is feminism and female empowerment done right" but here we are
I love movies that do this. For example, in Jurassic World people gave that movie a ton of crap because Claire was running from a dinosaur in high heels. The actress has said multiple times that it felt *strong* to keep the heels on. She didn’t have to erase her femininity in order to be a badass. Those are the female characters I love the most.
Beyond that she was *not* supposed to have good shoes, she is an office worker, and if she wears heels all day, she will probably not have a way to change her shoes. Also, having had to run in high heels, it is doable, just not necessarily the most comfortable way to run.

"In the original cut, Shaggy was a stoner" I'm pretty sure he was still a stoner in the final cut.
They did make a reference by having smoke coming out of the van while Shaggy and Scooby were in there. They were actually just cooking burgers but we know what they meant.

This might seem minor but I love how accurate yet *realistic* the outfits are. They look like actual outfits! Alot of live actions clothing look like cheap bad cosplay.
I can't even watch once upon a time UX the costumes are really cheap looking most of the time
when your watching a remake and it looks like a bad porn you know they didn't spend much time on the costumes lmao

yess and i’d like to add on how *accurate* each person looks to their cartoon counterpart. I think adaptions will always have a huge visual appeal it needs to carry out, and having characters look believable is crucial too

That line was actually from the second one. Scooby Doo 2 Monsters Unleashed. I’d love to see an analysis on that one because I think it was more memorable and better written than the one talked about in this video. 🙌
I absolutely get this. I had fallen into the trap of I'm not like other girls. I was bullied a lot by other girls, and I guess I didn't want to be put in the same boat as them. Legitimately, that line really started a healthy change in me. It seems so silly. But it stuck with me.
Same. The "I'm not like other girls" shit had a vice grip on me and that one single line made me go "...Huh. That's... actually pretty cool" then proceeded to be the first step to me getting comfortable in my own femininity

IT DOES NOT TAKE ITSELF TOO SERIOUSLY. It’s silly and fun like a cartoon, it’s light, with silly jokes and silly scenes. The characters are over the top as they are in cartoons, but more well rounded as it happens in movies. It’s just a perfect middle point. And now it’s a nostalgia masterpiece with all the 2000s vibes it gives off. Still love to watch this movie.

@@maxxhanneman9848 I feel like the second was more a cash grab than anything (seriously why else is Seth Myers in it?) But it did try harder than a lot of live action adaptations and pulled it off. But more like the gang grown up. (The age old "men are clueless and women will crucify them" joke.) Also, Fred comes off as an even bigger douche canoe than in the first one (which remembering when we first see him and again after the split, yeah, checks out)

This is one of the reasons I love this movie and despise the 2010 mystery incorporated. It took itself too seriously and the comedy and lighthearted fun from earlier iterations just wasn't there. The writing is more similar to Riverdale than it is to the series it was based on.

I love how they made Daphne into a physically stronger character without losing her femininity. This was 2003 so we saw a feminine Xena and Buffy being strong without having to become a masculine version of themselves.

@SomeoneOnlyWeKnow No... it isn't. Nor is it okay for men to not be masculine. Not only is it the complete opposite of what Nature intended, it just plain looks wrong and cringe/creepy if the two sexes play against type.

Also Casey Kasem didn't quit. He was very ill and elderly and still continued to voice Shaggy until he was no longer physically capable due to his illness which robbed him of his voice.

Yeah, I was laughing too when she referred to Kasem as "the other guy" but Matthew Lillard is amazing. BTW some drama: they actually replaced him in the latest update of the show and he found out via twitter :(

I always liked they made Daphne the literal muscle of the group. Also a subtle note I never realized when the group split you can see them walking towards their own cars implying their infighting got so bad they wasn’t even traveling in the mystery machine together anymore. A lot of us assumed growing up they just had a big fight and split randomly.

I thought Fred got a ride with the news girl that kissed him probably insinuating he had a one night stand with her after the break up. Fred’s too “cool” to drive after a break up in this franchise.

The other 3 were fantastic too! Even in the cartoon tho Shaggy always stands out with his goofy way of speaking, having the titular dog as his best friend, and being the comic relief. It would have been much more concerning if the other 3 had stood out more than Shaggy. His casting was perfect but so were all the rest. I didn’t know how solid an actor Linda Cardelini was until years later because she became the definitive Velma for me.
I'm so glad he took over the voice roll for Shaggy!

Fun fact: Tim Curry is a HUGE fan of Scooby Doo and had voiced the villain in "Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost." They offered him the creepy owner role here as well, and he was set to accept it before learning that the character would turn out to be Scrappy all along. He HATED Scrappy, so refused the role and was replaced with Rowan Atkinson!

Why'd they tried to give him the role of Scrappy doo, they don't sound anything alike. It probably would've made more sense to give him the role of the kidnapped owner of the island.

Daphne didn't instantly become a kick ass martial arts expert. She spent two years improving. Thus, the "Girl Power" thing is earned. She also was not perfect.
yeah, i left my own comment about deleted scenes, but they showed her training in one of them in the time between the split and the present. And they also had the contrast of Velma being full of it with her "career taking off" when she is shown in therapy and mockingly not even remembered for being a mystery inc team member-over the top yes, but the brains usually behind the desk is usually the one only the team knows/thanks. She just happens to actually be out there, which makes it all the more insulting, while lying to freddy's face while Daphne's black belt is actually the truth.
Yeah, and they didn't give her super human strength or anything, she's doing pretty much exactly what you'd expect from someone of her approximate build could do, so she's a decent feminine badass role model that's actually attainable.
@@theapexsurvivor9538 There's also a scene that was deleted showing her training (along with velma in group therapy-flashbacks) when they all re-meet all the airport. It shows she isn't particularly great but is able to handle herself enough. I wish we could get a full, uncut-version of this film with all the great deleted scenes back in.

And arguably, she was never exactly "ditzy," either. A little careless and made helpless at times, but she was always a "curious cat," and didn't scare easily. She had a good idea of what was happening, but usually didn't expect to be wrapped up in it the way she did, usually being the one to accidentally spring traps. She knew something was _there_ or was just generally trying to find something "off," but she didn't know "what" until she's in it, which isn't exactly a failure. Just really bad luck. Learning to be a badass had more to do with having a way to get _out_ of traps after she sprang them, more than anything else. She, herself, as a person wasn't exactly a problem that needed changing, which is a nice departure from the usual Girl Boss Transformations, too.
This movie is strangely perfect in a way. Taking source material with an extremely simple concept it managed to modernize its characters while not taking anything away from them. It has its own personality which is something very few live action adaptations can say

I think the PG rating, looking back, helped it not rely as heavily on the raunchiness as it could have which kept the "scooby doo" vibe. A good example of this is shows like Riverdale who lean more on the "grow up" aspects and less on the cartoon which causes it to basically not be able to exist without these melodramatic elements
They understood kids were their target audience and did covert adult humor.

finally someone else who thinks that this movie ISNT actually hot trash. I've seen way too many people tear it apart but like...well it's like you said, it's not like it's some cinematic masterpiece, but it's still ya know...GOOD. it's not absolutely god awful like people make it out to be. For what it is, it's a decent movie and a fun enough watch
This movie ruined a central core point of the original cartoon: The monsters were always fake. There was no supernatural powers. No ghosts. It was always a scam. Scobby Doo taught children skepticism about the supernatural. But in these movies, there was no 'mask reveal' showing everything was fake. Instead, it was real magic.
They kept the superficial similarity of the characters, but ignored the central THEME of every single episode: Magic isn't real. Supernatural isn't real. There are no ghosts, no monsters.

scooby doo zombie island released 4 years prior. was much closer to following the original cartoon, and involved actual magic and actual zombies
scooby doo and the cyber chase, one year before this movie. basically magic levels of sci-fi-being-sent-into-the-game things

and thats just three off the top of my head. try some brief google searches before saying this movie is bad PURELY because it does something that's been done before in scooby doo. Scooby do was never about "skepticism in the supernatural", it's about a group of kids solving mysteries. regardless of if theyre real or not.
@@0MidnighttheDragon0 I grew up in the 70s watching the original Scooby-Doo,. The original series most definitely IS based on mysteries that turn out to be hoaxes. Literally, every episode ended with a real person being unmasked. In fact, even the predecessors that Scooby Doo was based on had the theme of supernatural hoaxes. The later 80s spinoffs were mostly junk with the exception of a few gems.
Quoting Wikipedia: "Each of these episodes features Scooby and the four teenage members of Mystery, Inc.-Fred, Shaggy, Daphne and Velma-arriving at a location in the Mystery Machine, a van painted with psychedelic colors and flower power imagery. Encountering a purportedly supernatural monster terrorizing the local populace, such as a ghost, they decide to investigate. The kids split up to look for clues and suspects, while being chased at turns by the monster. Eventually, the kids come to realize the paranormal activity is actually an elaborate hoax, and-often with the help of a Rube Goldberg-like trap designed by Fred-they capture the creature suit-wearing villain and unmask him or her. Revealed as a flesh and blood crook who used the costume to cover up their crimes, the villain is arrested and taken to jail, often with the catchphrase "if it weren't for those pesky/meddling kids""
You're like someone trying to tell me Michael Bay's Transformer movies were good because of homages to the original and because he cast Peter Cullen. To anyone who grew up in the Transformers G1 era, they're utter trash. Or that Disney's replacement of Avengers EMH with Avengers Assemble was an improvement.
This movie is "OK", but I don't like the bad CGI and plot that throws away a lot of the themes of the original just because James Gunn wasn't to "amp things up". For example, Velma and Fred were heroes to me growing up because they were logical, scientific, engineering oriented problem solvers. Fred would often design contraptions with Velma's help to trap the ghost. Replacing this with magic essentially undermines Velma and Fred's character talents in favor of slapstick.
The best thing I can say about it is inspired casting. If you want to write supernatural stuff, it can be done well, look at the 80s cartoon "The Real Ghostbusters". This wasn't it. This was a comedy slapstick movie, not a 'mystery'. And as a kid, I read mystery or detective novels not because the solution was 'magic did it'

There's a difference between 'staying in the past' and disliking bad writing. There are loads of excellent movies I like that were produced 2000-2020 , you're just offended because the majority doesn't agree with you about this film, and most people think it is extremely flawed. That's why the Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic ratings are so low.
Just because remakes are new doesn't make them better. Look no further than the utter pile of trash known as Ghostbusters (2016) or you know, The Phantom Menace, Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker. It isn't simply people stuck on old stuff, it's that the old versions were better and the reboots were full of bad logic, bad character development, inconsistencies, etc. But you know, only Boomers prefer the Empire Strikes Back over The Last Jedi, and it's only because they can't dig Ryan Johnson's "newness"

He did so well that in he later became the voice of Shaggy in some of the animated shows and movies.
I think Matthew revealed he literally screamed for hours, intentionally "destroying", per se, his voice so he could sound more like Shaggy. That's commitment, lol.
You should watch it, it’s so good, especially since now is the perfect time to watch it (cuz it’s close to Halloween)
I really recommend it. I just rewatched it, and even in my 30s it still holds up. Some of the jokes I missed as a super sheltered 13-year-old had me in giggling fits

"After the 'original guy' retired" - ouch. Iconic Casey Kasem didn't deserve that. Even Lillard respected the man and got his blessing before doing so.

I always found it funny that they wanted us to believe that these old ass adults to be teenagers or super young college kids.
The casting was extremely perfect. Not to mention the soundtrack, which had Outkast, Busta Rhymes, and Sugar Ray. It's honestly so cool that Mark McGrath (lead singer of Sugar Ray) made an appearance in the movie. This movie is one of my all-time favorites for a reason. Obviously, the CGI looks dated seeing how it's been 20 years since its release and we now have CGI that looks seamless and real but it's nice to see that. It's nostalgic.
Oh my god the soundtrack was epic.
It was so weird to see clips of the monsters in this video that weren't as fuzzy as the ones I watched growing up on VHS and a CRT tv. Even then it was jarring and stood out a little, but the film quality, or lack of it, helped a little

I loved this movie when I was younger, even though I knew it was flawed. But now I look back and I am so awed by Matthew Lillard's performance. It's so committed and his interpretation of the character is realized. The look is perfect. I just smile whenever he's on screen.
I will never understand how Jon Faverau nailed The Jungle Book and giving us something fresh but still somewhat faithful to the original cartoon, yet failed with The Lion King. It's like in the span of three years he completely forgot what worked. Someone should've sat him down and make him watch The Jungle Book again to jog his memory. That being said, Scooby Doo is definitely number 1 on my list of live-action adaptations.

TLK = they saw the success of TJB and decided the gimmick of it all was good enough for sales
What helped in remaking the Jungle Book is that along with adapting the animated movie it remembered to revisit the original book.

The weird thing about this movie is that is not really based on the classic cartoon but on the perception that adults that grew with the show had, like Shaggy being a stoner, Velma being a lesbian, Daphne being a damsel in distress, Fred being an idiot or Scrappy being evil, none of those where a thing in the cartoons, some where introduced or explored on later shows like Fred being dumb in a Pup named Scooby Doo, Velma having a female love interest in Mystery Incorporated, Shaggy being arrested for havin drugs in Harvey Birdman attorney at law or Scrappy being super muscular in the Apocalypse comics
So is funny that they base their movie characters in aspects that werent part of the cartoon characters to beging.
When did people decide Fred was a dumbass? I watched the cartoon a lot growing up, Fred was kind of a stick in the mud but still a good guy. In the movie he's just a stupid dick

But he was a competent and smart guy, he and Velma were the only ones that actually seemed qualified to solve mysteries. Movie Fred was just a borderline creepy douche, if they didn't tell you in dialogue that it's Fred I wouldn't have guessed.
Really?! I didn't get that at all, then I haven't really seen the later shows. I watched scooby as a kid the earlier seasons. This movie is good, entertaining at best. The cast was good as well. I like the cartoon version better. I found the gang more intriging. I always wanted to know there backstory.
@@floydharper1216 given Scooby Doo's origins as a riff on stuff like the Hardy Boys, Fred is pretty much in line with that influence. Very Hardy-esque as much as Velma was a more bookish, nerdy Nancy Drew.
I honestly think Matthew Lillard's performance was Oscar worthy in this one! Just absolutely amazing! The humor is fun, and it is a good mystery, and feels just like the cartoons. They did such a great job with this, and even the sequel, although I think this one is a bit better.
Honestly, I can't imagine anyone else other than the cast from this movie to portray their respective characters.

Brendon Frasier's George of the Jungle is another live-action adaptation that utterly succeeds in my opinion.
Scooby Doo will always be a feel-good film for me and I always go back to this franchise every now and then bc it provides me so much nostalgia and comfort. This live adaptation is sincerely one of my favorites, and you just laid out what made it so much special that I couldn't quite explain as eloquently
It makes sense that James Gunn was the writer. He understands movie adaptations. Look at how he salvaged the Suicide Squad franchise or the Guardians of the Galaxy. He gets it.

@@danielorlovaquinn Suicide Squad was way better than Guardian of the Galaxy because he had all the freedom to make that movie and it shows. I love the GOTG but SS was way more enjoyable and horror is his genre so yeah.

I knew people would eventually see this movie for the masterpiece that it is.
As a 70s kid who grew up loving all things Scooby Doo, I thought this was a great adaptation! It kept the heart and fun, but also gave us some emotional depth. This is a great overview of the project, thank you!
Mystery Incorporated legit deserves so much more attention and acclaim. It's now my default imagining of the show and it's made just about all other Scooby Doo properties unwatchable.

The fact that some of the cast went on to voice the characters in the cartoon movies and shows makes it even better cause it showed how much they love this project and the story
Also the gang split up in Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, but that was more that they’d grown up and grown apart. Also a great Scooby Doo movie

Going back the Shaggy's analogy of the Banana Split, there's one thing that's missing... the bowl. In this case, Shaggy and Scooby are the bowl that holds all those ingredients together
I kind of wish there was an R-rated Directors Cut. I'm really curious how that would be. But I do also really enjoy this film as it is. Its zany, a bit corny at times, but keeps the heart and soul of Scooby-Doo. Thanks for discussing this!

I love both of the Scooby Doo live adaptations, they are a huge part of my childhood, they’re funny and actually have a plot without taking themselves so seriously, those actors will always hold a special place in my heart as silly as that sounds
I was absolutely obsessed with this movie as a kid and had the assumption that it must have been terrible now as an adult, because I haven't watched it in so long, and gee thanks for this video, it makes me realize what a fun time it was and still is ! Love the nostalgia
Even if FPJr didn't have much to do he committed to the bit in a way that didn't seem out of character or hammy. He didn't phone it in and while that is the bare minimum I still appreciate it
can we just highlight the fact that the CG version of Scooby is pretty faithful in both design and his erratic movement, plus Scooby's classic sense of humor is very well translated onto the CG Scooby's facial expressions. It's pretty clear the movie blew most of their CG-budget on Scooby's movements and design, because the other CG monsters are so fake-looking you almost forget that Scooby is CG as well.
I am actually really glad that you spoke about this movie so highly and positively! I always thought they did an excellent job remaking those. I have no idea why everyone I made talks so negatively about them! They had excellent and superb casting and people didn’t like them all because the setting wasn’t the same. Isn't it funny how a live action movie like Scooby-Doo would become more memorable than Scoob, an animated movie? Similar vibe I had with the 2000 live action Grinch movie and it's 2018 animated counterpart.

i didnt watch scoob but watched a review and i could tell it was bad thats why i havent watched it. tbh a lot of animated movies nowadays arent good its a shame that some of the best companies that werent disney/pixar have all been bought by other companies or have just gotten bad. theyre all just fillled with cringy pop culture refrence jokes

And now....for a BAD adaptation of the same series: "Velma."
The perfect ridiculousness of this movie is exactly why me and my adult friends will still get together to watch it. It hits the sweet spot of elevating the experience while still maintaining its foundation. One specific point of a good children's show remake is that it very intentionally includes humor that spans all ages, for current kids and adult nostalgia watchers. It has longevity with specifically 2000s kids because as I rewatched it, its humor aged with me. The fart jokes for when I was 7, and the Mary Jane joke for me now.
One great thing about these movies is how great the actors did with sounding almost identical to the original voices of the show! Its soo impressive

I always just thought of this movie as another Scooby Doo movie, never a live action remake but like Zombie Island except now they’re in my world. This is a masterpiece point blank . 🤷🏾♀️
I had the DVDs as a child and would watch the movies at least once a month. The movie was one of my favorites and the extras in the DVD were fun.

Velma spends a lot of time with Fred in this so I feel like they could have mixed things up and had her get with fred if they wanted to keep her straight. I personally love Fraphne but their relationship comes out of nowhere in this movie, and Fred has more interaction with velma. That being said I do love the friendship and respect building that came from Velma and Fred's interactions that were purely platonic. I feel like they probably hoped that we would just accept the fred and daphne ship as canon based on fan perception and not question the lack of build up. I did that for like 18 years and then realized it wasn't built up much.
In Zombie island and witches ghost Fraphene is a soft ship.

Actually, Fred and Daphne are married in real life and they were chosen to have real chemistry in the movie. I agree they should have showed more in the movie about that. Maybe it got cut because it was too inappropriate in the scenes they had planned?
I’m guessing since we all knew fred and daphne were together or were the canon ship, they didnt build it up and focused more on fred and velma’s friendship coz we would instantly know that fred and daphne are the ones who are together even without any build up. I hope what i said makes sense lol.

I remember watching this on video tape when I was 9 and Instantly falling in love with the movie, I remember being most impressed with Mathew Lillards performance as Shaggy whos my favorite Scooby doo character. I remember laughing so hard at certain parts and feeling really sentimental during other parts. I really enjoyed this movie and will even still watch it today, 20 years later!!
also there was a 60s/70s revival in the early 2000s so the costumes and vibes fit sooo well with the zeitgeist of the time!

I didn't hate him as a kid, but I was rewatching some of the shows with Scrappy (a lot of Scooby Doo is on Tubi TV) and oh my gosh he was SO ANNOYING!!! I feel like they toned him down in later spinoffs but in the original Scooby and Scrappy series I cannot stand him

As a kid I loved the original cartoons series. When the movie came out I wasn't expecting much, but....WOW. The cast did an amazing job of recreating the original experience and bringing the characters to life.
This movie, the original and Mystery Incorporated are the best iterations of the show imo. Both this and MI helped flesh out the characters and broadened the story. MI was also the first and only serialized Scooby Doo show.
What about Scooby-Doo 2? That movie was just as good in my opinion

Best childhood movie! I remember having a Daphne Barbie that went with this movie and it came with a scooby! Also Matthew Lillards acting is 100/10!

I'm glad you brought up the Jungle Book and Narnia in comparison to the Lion King 2019. They were able to show realistic animals while still maintaining genuine emotion and expression that never came out as jarring.
The issue with Lion King is that is was so afraid to make even the smallest changes in the story (minus butchering Be Prepared) that it was such a shot for shot remake, it failed to have its own identity. I’m still baffled John Faverau was the director.

I think Scooby-Doo was monstrously underrated. I love it every time I watch it. However, another one from that pathetically underrated was Jose and the Pussycats. The songs were not that bad, they picked great actors, it had what has to be the most classic line in any cartoon to movie adaptation EVER, (Alexander: You know what, I still don't know why you're here. Alexandra: I'm here because I was in the comic book.) It had Parker Posey. When Parker Posey is given the right role, she's AWESOME. (She was a PERFECT replacement for Jonothan Harris as Dr. Smith) And she was excellent as Fiona. If you pay attention this little movie had a lot to say. So there's a movie you should go back to. I mean, if you remember Scooby-Doo, you have to remember Josie and the Pussycats.
Felt all of this, really love both and Josie and them was so much better than the Archie comics imo just because wasn't so much jealousy over the protag mess going on in it.

YES! I was scrolling through the comments hoping for a JatP shout out. I've never seen the cartoon but this hold up as one of the most quotable enjoyable movies of my childhood, to this day one of my semi-regular comfort watches. I hold it and the Scooby Doo movies as my top-tier cartoon adaptations.

The real problem with Will Smith as a genie is that- he’s a funny actor but he’s No Comedian. That man could not do good stand up unless the audience is predisposed to like him based on acting roles he didn’t even write. They should’ve looked at famous stand up comedians for the role- since that’s why they hired Robin Williams in the first place
He needed to learn comic timing.
Comedy is teachable. But Smiths ego is too big. And Genie was a goofball. Smith doesn't want to play parts that make him look silly. And that shows
Well they wrote the original script and songs with Williams in mind adding lots of impressions and ad libs. But they never did that for Will, why hire a man that can rap for a musical if you're not going to properly utilise that?
I liked his understated comedy in the "Aladdin" film - made me go back to the theater two more times just to watch! The ad lib scene with him and Aladdin going on about spoons and jams had me in stitches! I think he played the role perfectly as someone who has to follow in Robin Williams' shadow. Let's be honest - NO ONE was going to outshine Robin's genie. So what we got through Will Smith, in my opinion, was a highly enjoyable and pleasant version.
@@somethingclever8916 I'm not saying Will Smith delivered a good performance as Genie, but his comedic timing isn't bad in general. He's not a stand up comedian at all, but he's still a seasoned comedic actor. Men in Black and Fresh Prince are prime examples of Will Smith at his best.

Never was a big fan of the cartoon and haven't watched the film but I completely see how this adaptation takes the original and expands on it in an organic way. I even laughed at some of the gags and got some feels from those clips. James Gunn definitely did something right there.
(Also Velma is cute as hell 😳)
The gang splitting up was also the idea explored in scooby doo zombie island. It's my favorite scooby doo movie and also the one that has been the source of recurring nightmares of mine for years lmao
I watched this movie again a couple of months ago as a 21 year old rather than a 7 year old, and it holds up. A solid 7 out of 10 with legitimately funny jokes. It was cringy and VERY 2002 at points(fart jokes and frosted tips galore), but even beyond the nostalgia it was genuinely entertaining. I grew up watching Whats New Scooby Doo, so I'm sure that had an impact, but I think even without that context it's just a solid movie with genuinely scary moments and legitimate tension. If people's souls didn't go back into their bodies this is just Scooby Doo meets John Carpenter's The Thing.
honestly i can't think of other time period that is perfect for a Scooby Doo live action adaptation. Everything was so campy and raunchy in the 2000s and it's a movie destined to be made for the time. I can't imagine seeing a live action adaptation in the 2010s or 2020s as Hollywood is trying to "politically correct" itself now. It's just the right movie at the right time.

One of my favorite live-actions is the Casper movie from 1995 and I believe it was a wonderful adaptation as well and to see that you just have to compare with the other live-action movies that were made after that with different stories, they can’t hold a candle to the first one made in 1995 with Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman because this one was deep and emotional while still had the charms of the original content and even expanded it’s Universe while the other ones even though they were fun and entertaining they weren’t as deep as the first one
It's cool to see such a positive take on the Scooby Doo live action movie. As a kid, I was a huge Scooby fan...and was massively disappointed with the movie. It just felt way off base compared to the cartoons, too... whacky maybe? Some of the darker, sightly more serious Scooby Doo animated movies were among my favourites, and I loved the real-life mystery format of the series...and I guess it was the lack of both of these elements that disappointed me. The movie just seemed goofy, with unrealistic overly 'cartoony' characters, and a plot not true to the heart of the originals. But hey, as I said I'm delighted to find not everyone agrees with my perspective, it's cool to see such a following for this iteration of the beloved Scooby :) But it wasn't for me.
Agree 100% I like the movies but they don’t give me the same vibes as the cartoons at all.
The cast of this movie is by far the most perfect one I've ever seen.
Definitely hit the movie live action adaptation sweet spot imo. The body humor makes me cringe to remember, but it certainly embodies what makes Scooby Doo fun but not too scary. And Daphne slamming the wrestler will always be iconic.
Ooo, and rip anyone who wants a version of Velma who gets a girlfriend. Mystery Inc. which was amazing and went darker than I expected, only hinted at intended epilogue Velma gf agenda.

I remember watching this as a kid and I didn't understand the jokes they put out there but still feels charming and unique and sometimes gives me junpscares. Now as an adult I appreciate and loved it more since it's too damn funny to count.

As a child I was horrified and deeply hurt that Scrappy-Doo was the villain, but now as an adult....I still am! #JusticeForScrappy
That said, finding out that it was originaly intended to be for adults has softened my perception of the whole film since I can see the appeal and the joke for that generation. As a kid I didn't really get the jokes and I found the tone uncomfortable. It's left me with mixed feelings for kids shows that overdo the adult in-jokes at the expense of it's target audience. I think if it had been allowed to be what it was intended to be it would have had a better reception overall, with fewer confused children.

I was horrified as a kid by scrappy doo in the film. He was my favourite character to begin with. I didn't even think he would be in it. When the reveal was made, I started crying so much my parents had to take me out of the theater. 😂 I still love and hate this movie.

Casey Kasem quit because he was a vegetarian and he got fed up with Shaggy eating meat. Billy West took over the role for a while, he is one of my voice over idols!
@@lisainthestudio That's not true at all, Shaggy was canonically vegetarian even in this film (literally frying 'eggplant burgers' in the Mystery Machine) Kasem was really sick at the time Lillard took over, and sadly died in 2013, though he did do a few things as Shaggy before then

I've always LOVED this movie. I think my sexual awakening was Mark McGrath singing to Daphne at the pool 😂 I'm amazed at how it is such a product of its time yet still so perfectly enjoyable and somehow timeless.

I was born in '69 so I grew up with Scooby & the gang and they were one of my favorites in my childhood. I took my own kids to see the live action movie and really loved it, it was a family favorite for a long time, we must have worn out the DVD and seen it several times on the big screen over the summers when our local movie theater had dollar movie days and revived a lot of favorites. Your analysis was great.
I loved this video. The break down pointed out things I missed and it's nice to see a positive review of the movie for once.
