- Apart from a one liner at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix on 22 April 1973 during the afternoon show this is the only time Elvis performed 'Danny Boy', one of his favourite songs on stage.
A studio version, rated as one of Elvis' best recordings, was released on the 'Elvis Presley Boulevard' album. It was recorded by Elvis at Graceland on 5 February 1976.
My Dad, who never liked Elvis, came into my room one time while I was playing, “Danny Boy”, off of the 33 record album, “Elvis Presley Blvd..”. He asked me, “Who is that singing?”. I told him it was Elvis. Now, my Dad having been born in Wales, this was one of his favorite songs. He said, a little choked up, “I’ve never heard it sung so beautifully!”. What a moment.❤️

I don’t think songs like this,which Elvis sang on his last albums, were an attempt to win anyone over. He was singing songs he felt an emotional connection to. I think if my Dad hadn’t been so propagandized against Elvis’s early image, but had listened to his ballads, or gospel music, he would have realized his talent sooner.

Many Elvis haters are just blinded by other haters but when they hear certain songs are stunned by his obvious talent.

Elvis is love, pure love. Like a beautiful girl with no makeup…there is nothing contrived with his singing. He loved us. He sang for us not for himself. He was one of a kind. We will never see the likes of him again.

I have tears in my eyes......That was so beautiful. I used to go around to each of the dining rooms of my eldercare facility and sing this as one of my residents played piano for me....A treasured memory.
What is amazing, about Elvis. he could sing hit songs. that were number one on the charts, even better, than the original artists. He is considered the greatest entertainer of the last half of the 20th century. The greatest entertainer of the first half of the 20th was Al Jolson.

One of my favorite songs, and, IMO, speaking of Elvis' recordings, the studio version is up there with "Unchained Melody" in terms of raw emotional response.
This live version is beautiful for what it is, but it could have been much better if it was at least performed in C, just like the studio version. It is no secret that by then Elvis was having issues with reaching certain notes - in fact, the studio version itself is an example of this, as it was first tried in a higher key, and then settled in C as soon as Elvis noticed that he would have a hard time hitting the right notes. The same happened to "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", by the way.
Just imagine Elvis giving this song the "Unchained Melody" treatment live. By himself on the piano, playing and singing it in the key he was most comfortable with (was it Tony Brown's "fault" here that it was played in D? Elvis asks for the right key and he starts playing it in D), which, as I said, actually ends up being the same key as he performed "Melody". Whoa. Now THAT would be something. Alas, it was not to be. Another lost opportunity in Elvis' final years. That said, I'm thankful we have this one special moment recorded and available.
Sherrill Nielsen performed it live in Lake Tahoe on May 9, 1976 & in Rochester, NY on May 25, 1977.
