I have to agree, I bought a Kia in 2007 and it got over 250,000 miles on it, I bought a Hyundai in 2017 and it blew a motor at 58,000 miles. I now have about 90,000 miles on the replacement motor and am crossing my fingers.

Most engines today (GDI & GDI/Turbo engines) are garbage for extended reliability, compared to most of the naturally-aspirated port-injected engines that preceded them. People who fell for the 10K oil change scam also made it even worse. Automakers today only build to meet fuel-economy regulation requirements & to last the engine/power-train warranty period & could care less beyond that. They want you in a new vehicle every 4-5 years (or sooner).

As a once garage owning small car mechanic, 90% on Japanese cars, and owned several of them myself through those 10 years starting in '74, I've had the 'pleasure' to see the introduction of several brands the came from the Far East, and of course worked on a few other country's cars like the Ree-no Daphne, (yeah, not called that exactly) and had a buddy across the road that drove a Fiat X-19, which really wasn't as bad as all the sedans that they put out then. Not too hard to work on, simple carb and distributor ignition, with a cross wise engine behind the back glass. Anyway, I hated the Hyundai and all it was to me was a South Korean body the mocked Japanese styles and used a Japanese engine, albeit not a very good one. Mitsubishi comes to mind but Kia was the first to supply them, and parts were a nightmare to get. The Zero plane maker, Mitsubishi. didn't do a very good job either with their engines in their pickups, as like the balance shaft bearings weren't replaceable and the original ones were hopefully good enough to re-use, and being a shaft that had no hard pressures like rod bearings, the engine could mostly get away by leaving them be. But Hyundai's were joke to me and just didn't cut the mustard for a good car, and this was before their engine maker, Kia, started with their cars in my area. And still today they are proving my point as in this article points out about them.

@bryancarlson3673 yes in the 1980’s as a schoolboy then admittedly I had no experience but some of my friends parents who were lucky to be able to pay more money would instead of getting an Austin Rover car would get a BMW or Mercedes because they were German and the engineering reputation they have. At the end of the 90’s my mate picked up a 325 that was a 1988 or 89 model if I remember. Lovely nice strong car with the fantastic straight 6 engine. I was helping my boss one day check her oil in a 1 series and was shocked to look under the hood. I couldn’t understand why even though she has no mechanical knowledge was not able to top her oil up. I found a square plastic oil cap that had got stuck on from all the heat, and not enough room around the rocker cover to get a good grip to remove it. I looked around further and saw all the rest of the plastic and thought “this is a BMW”?. A few days later I told a mechanic in my local pub and he says it’s common problem, he’s made a makeshift tool for removing stuck oil caps on modern BMW’s and said they were trash. Nice to drive yes and quite a few are good looking cars but endless money pits due to poor design and quality and plastics. I also couldn’t believe how black her oil was and that’s when I heard about the ridiculous 20000 mile service interval. Pure gimmick, even fully synthetic oil doesn’t last anywhere near that long. The maximum miles anyone should go is 10000 and that’s if journeys are long so minimal stop start driving. For around town driving and short commutes to work the oils best performance is only good for 5000. At 5000 on my Focus the oil is starting to look a bit dirty but even at a 5000 change you can hear the difference with fresh oil, it’s quieter on cold start and quieten downs a little quicker too with that fresh oil and filter. Longer than 5000 I’d feel I was damaging the engine using old oil let alone 20000. So even on a 4 year old car my boss was burning oil in that 1 series. And if the car has turbos and oil is only changed every 20000 that’s just ridiculous, new turbos and an engine prematurely wearing out. I suppose people that can afford to change their car every 2 or 3 years won’t see the damage, it’s the people who end up buying a used BMW with low mileage like 60000 and thinking great I’ve got a fairly new 4-5 year old BMW with only 60000 miles only to find the turbos are really whining from damage from old oil clogging up the return feed and starving them of oil and they are putting a litre of oil in every 1000 miles, and the car is about to become a huge moneypit.

In the UK. I picked up a Ford Focus but was very wary of a 3 cylinder 1.0 turbo Eco Boost. On the MK3 very soon after introduction those 3 cylinder are your only choice. I was lucky and grabbed a tried and trusted Duratec engine, a 4 cylinder 1.6 vct with no wet belt or the dodgy oil pump. It’s a manual not a Powershift auto transmission, the big problem with especially US as most people don’t drive manuals. Change oil full synthetic every 5000 miles and it doesn’t burn any oil. Picked up at 67k miles a few years ago on nearly 98k and hope to have it many years I look after it and never neglect those oil changes. Had a water pipe leak and need replacing and a regulator on the drivers window but fingers crossed it’s been a good car and nice to drive. Focus handoff very nice for a small family hatchback. Nice sound quality on the in car entertainment lots of options, easy Bluetooth connection for my iPhone, voice control, parking sensors etc. decent spec for a 2011 Ford, the interiors are vastly improved over the Mark 2’s which I always thought looked too basic.

So I traded it for a 2014 Toyota that only lasted 3 months before the trans was slipping so bad I was not able to get on the highway or up the hill to my house and the dealer said when it stops moving we can fix it '' first and last toyota for me '' so I traded that for a kia and got 2 years out of that before the motor lost 50% of it's power, I could not pass on the highway so if I got behind a big truck I was stuck there, New cars are junk and they are made of used can's and plastic and then they want you to pay 3 times the price,

  • @Theywaswrong
    @Theywaswrong 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

There are a lot of reasons for failing engines. Quality control, cheap parts and bad suppliers, government regulations with deadlines to meet. But one that doesn't get mentioned when discussing USED rides is the fact that by the third owner, and more, maintenance takes a back seat. They either can't afford proper maintenance or it's just not important based on the price they paid. Oil changes? Just keep adding oil. I once sold a car and a while later he came back to trade it in. 20k miles and he hadn't changed the oil. How do I know? Quaker State at one time had a branded oil filter and I bought out the stock from a business shutting down. It was green in color and had been out of production for a couple years. I pop the hood, see the green Quaker State filter (always changed the oil first thing) and asked the guy if he had ever changed the oil. He hesitated, went quiet for a few seconds then said "well I think I did". Yeah, no.

I think it is safe to say you can now add the new Toyota Tundra to this list of engines to avoid the new Turbo charged V6 especially the 2022 models is having lots of issues with spun rod bearings. Toyota will eventually fix it and the engine will become near bullet proof, but for now I would avoid any Toyota Tundra 2024 and older with the Turbo V6 engine. Maybe the 2025 models will be good since they did improve with the 2024 models, but I would wait and get a 2025 if I were in the market for a Tundra.

      What's your view on Hyundai's N line 1.6 & 2.0 turbo engines?
I keep hearing good reviews on them

Unfortunately, cars are not made to last. Not anymore. Some worse than others. Even with diligent maintenance, there’s no guarantee anymore. Too much cost cutting and the use of plastic instead of aluminum. No Jaguar on the list? Thanks. Love the snark. 👍

Can vouch, original owner santa Fe 2018. The engine was replaced under warranty after fighting Hyundai to honor the warranty.

Yup, I drove an ecoboost 1.6l they're junk. It was a work patrol 🚓 car, and it went through 2 escapes both threw turbos all the time. Both engines that were originally put in grenades in over a yr and a half I was there over 5+yrs before my position was cut. 😂

back in the days the turbos and superchargers were installed onlt on the high end sports cars not on 20000 dollar honda civic

Where can you get a 20,000 dollar Civic? Most are in the mid 20's going closer to the 30's and above. Maybe used, but used car prices are ridiculous as well.

Ford + turbo engines = garbage. Most recalls of any auto maker 3 years running. That's the thing running at Ford.

So many cars now that will never last 100k miles. Forget EVs, we're talking ICE. Small displacment, turbos, direct injection and electrical gremlins -- this is the stuff thats filling up junkyards.
As I get older, I want boring cars. So what to drive? Toyota, Honda, and my personal favorite -- second generation Lexus with a 2GR-FE. Best paint, suspension, interior, powertrain of almost any car made. Sure, fuel economy sucks, but the savings (and hassle) in maintenance and repair more than makes up for that.

Many throw away models now and buyers are Ok in trading up every 2 or 3 years

I'm surprises Mark isn't chased off the lots of these car dealers. Maybe he promises to NOT show the actual name of the dealership.

If Honda Gives Lifetime Free Oil changes, then it would be a good buy. Otherwise waste basket.
Same issue with GMC Equinox. 1.5L engine turbo and they fail and blow up. Utter crap.
