      I have always loved Liza's look as well. Unconventional, but striking. I feel the same way about Billy Joel and Christy Brinkley's daughter Alexa. People poke fun of her looks (because she looks like Billy and not Christy), but I think she's uniquely beautiful.

    I remember Mister Rogers having Margaret Hamilton, aka Wicked witch, on his show because so many children had been frightened by her in the movie. Together they explained she was just dressing up and play acting and it was a lot of fun. She came across so nice.

    I had seen the movie several times in the sixties on my parents' black-and-white television set. In 1970 they purchased their first color set and I was completely unprepared when the movie suddenly switched to technicolor. I can only imagine the reactions of the theater-goers in 1939 when they saw it on the big screen.

      classic transition from the sepia tone to color. i also loved the fact that the studio went with Judy Garland instead of Shirley Temple. Garland was born to play Dorothy and I think the role needed the voice and the acting chops that she had over Shirley.

      @@keithabney4665 That wasn't really by choice. I think it was that Fox wouldn't lend Temple to MGM. It was lucky. What I didn't realize for many years was how much Garland was holding back when she sang in this film. She uses half of her voice in "Over the Rainbow".

    I was also lucky enough to meet..Ms.Margaret Hamilton(who played the dual roles of"Ms.Elmira Gulich" and"The Wicked Witch Of The West")in NYC..back in the 1970's..and she was nothing like those mean characters..she was a talented, sweet and kindly person..in Fact? So I'm 34 this year and all my life I've known Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz. Separately I had only heard the trolley song from The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode with Rosie O'Donnell. I had never known that Judy Garland sing that song in Meet Me in st. Louis all this time. As recently as a few weeks ago a friend ended up putting on the real song but just the clip from the movie on TH-cam. I grew up playing big band music in high school and am very fond of that era. So naturally seeing and hearing the real song just blew me away. I can't get that song out of my head and my heart now and probably won't. I'm then today watching a bunch of TH-cam videos of Judy on the Jack Paar or Johnny Carson shows and learning about her devastating backstory. That aside I randomly just find out right now after all this time that the director of Meet Me In St Louis ended up having a baby with Judy Garland and naming her Liza Minnelli whom ended up marrying the son of the Tin Man. Like WTF X 1000!!!!

I wonder if the people involved in its production had any idea that people would be so affected by the movie. Lorna Luft here gives a brief but excellent analysis of "The Wizard of Oz", explaining why the film is more than just a scary, sometimes heart-wrenching story but one that has a message about home and heart and facing fears and that lifts people up.

    • @klassicalmuzik
      @klassicalmuzik 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@raea3588 actually no, the scene where Dorothy gets carried off by the monkeys was not Judy. It was her stand in Bobbie Koshay. They shot the scene almost from the back to hide her face so that the audience wouldn’t know it wasn’t Judy. MGM wouldn’t have risked Judy doing that stunt, not so much because they cared about her safety, but because if Judy got hurt the picture would’ve been shut down until she recovered and that would’ve cost them more money.
      The two actors playing the monkeys who carried Dorothy away did however get injured when the wires snapped and they fell. I don’t believe the stand in Bobbie Koshay got injured though.

    _The Wizard of Oz_ truly is terrifying. Even though many of today's children are far more sophisticated (than most of us were), I would recommend ages 8 yrs. old and up ... does that sound about right?

    My first memory of the Wizard of oz, was seeing the wicked witch appear in munchkin-land. That scene is etched in my memory (word for word) and at 5 years old, it was the stuff of nightmares for weeks to come.
    Kids today are used to seeing all kinds of crap on TV, but in the 70's, that witch was the most evil thing you could ever set eyes on.

    The theme of the Wizard of Oz or the meaning behind it, is everyone wants to leave home and go to a place that is exciting and adventurous and risky. But there are hidden dangers and risks waiting for you when you do this. Dorothy realizes that her home and family was safe. Also she had the love of her family. Being in a forbidden place of decadence and immorality the fun only lasts a small time. As she quotes, "There is no place like home".

    I'm glad they saw this. The wizard of Oz is a wonderful film with great heartfelt messages. For a small child 4-whenever,itc can be scary and disturbing. There is a evil and wicked witch out to kill Dorothy and friends, and those winged flying monkeys. I remember hiding behind the sofa when the Witch and Monkeys were on.

    I think I read somewhere that the flying monkeys and the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were two of the characters that children were most scared of in family movies.

    End of the movie Dorothy was exactly back where she started - stay at home and let your dead mothers sister ignore your being upset about Toto biting miss Gulch and believe me - if she didn’t get hurt by the tornado is coming back for Toto . Aunt Elm will just hand the dog over again . Bad plot line a lot of corn . Dorothy didn’t leave home due to being ungrateful she left to protect Toto . Moral of story is that we already possess traits we think we don’t have . Scarecrow doesn’t believe he has a brain yet he figures each step .

    I loved their reaction to seeing their Mom on TV! They assumed it was live and everything happening to Dorothy was real! As a kid, I remember being sad when I heard Judy Garland had died because I assumed they wouldn't be able to show the Wizard of Oz anymore. My mother, not knowing how to explain how movies and TV shows were recording, told me that Judy had daughters and they would be able to fill in for her!

I WENT OH MY GOD THAT IS LIZA MINELLI DRESSED AS A CLOWN and so I watched the entire episode 21 thinking I had missed you. But your only in the end of that episode. I WOKE UP JUST FOR YOU.
