  • Join me for a walk around the gorgeous town centre of Guisborough, one of Yorkshire's best hidden gems! Complete with a 12th-century Augustinian Priory, a beautiful church and a number of other wonderful sights, Guisborough is home to so much history, and offers an interesting blend of medieval market town and Teesside industrial centre.
    As we walk around Guisborough, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including St. Nicholas Church, Guisborough War Memorial, Guisborough Priory Walls, Guisborough Market Cross, Guisborough Town Hall (covered in scaffolding!), The Black Swan Pub, Westgate, Guisborough Methodist Church, Sunnyfield House, Guisborough United Reformed Church, The Ironstone Miner Pub, Guisborough Library, Chapel Beck and the spectacular Gisborough Priory!
    Thank you so much to the following sites for their help in my research of Guisborough:

    This is great to find. When I was a small child, age 4 to age 7-ish, we lived in the house attached to Guisborough Grammar School that is clearly shown in 20:30 mins into the video. That was in the 1960s and this bit of Guisborough has not changed at all. I know that where we lived is no longer a grammar school. But the path along-side is / was called the Apple garth and it is where we played when I was little.

    So very pleased to see Guisborough after so many years away from my birthplace, M/Boro. Family circumstances forced me away from my roots in 1983, (I now live in Bedford), but viewing your incredible videos I'm transported right back, and perhaps rather foolishly I've found a stray tear trickling down my cheek. I know some say we must never look back. I don't hold with this at all. It's only by looking back at the places which had sigificence that I can be reminded of the beauty of 'God's own county'. Stokesley, Yarm, Gt. Ayton and further afield, all these towns and villages are/were just as important as the major landmarks which 'outsiders' may be more familiar with, such as Middlesbrough and Stockton which are generally only mentioned at national level when the topic is deprivation! Once again, sir,( or madam),, thank you for all the effort you put into each film you create.

    delightful town, the westgate could well be one of britain´s most welcoming and beautiful streets, contemporary urban planners could have a look at it in order to build green, pleasant, civilised environments. THX. Let´s walk!

      Absolutely! Westgate has a really nice blend of a wide open market street that still has a pleasant, medieval atmosphere to it! A real gem of Guisborough just as the town is a gem of Yorkshire :)
      Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the video!

    Brilliant! I love Guisborough! I spent all my school holidays here staying with my grandma just around the corner from the church, and going out to different places with my auntie...I always thought of Guisborough as my second home. Sadly, I don't go as often now but when I do, it brings back so many happy memories for me as a child. It's great to see this video and be taken back there once again - thankyou. 😊
    Only one thing I wish...that when you were talking about Sunnyfield House that you would have shown it so we could see it. We will have to zoom back to 5:23 instead to see what a magnificent house it was.

    Thank You for bringing back some lovely memories. I had my early years in Guisborough and went to the Pre School at Hutton Lowcross,now houses, then Provident School before moving to the Newly Built Newstead School, now Highcliff if I am correct. Unfortunately the family moved South when I was 11 years old leaving many good friends behind. I have revisited several times and have always been pleased to see that most of Guisborough is unchanged, well apart from the obvious multi housing estates on the outskirts.

    Thanks for bringing lots of memories and historical facts of my home town. Moved away when I was 14 back in 1986, I still call it “home”.

      It's a really lovely place! As I mentioned, it's a hidden gem of Yorkshire a little bit off the beaten track (by which I mean the railway line), but it's a worth a visit for a nice town centre walk if you get the chance :)
      Thank you so much for watching - I hope you enjoyed the video!

    I was born in Guisborough to West Cumbrian parents as was my sister, they lived there for 6 years and moved back to Workington when I was 2 weeks old so I sadly didn't get to know the town though I have visited a few time's and love the place

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! That's quite the unique personal heritage you've got there - and though Guisborough may be on the other side of the country from Workington I'm sure you'll agree that it's well worth the visit at any time of year - it's a spectacular town :)
      Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed this video!

    At 14.00 had to activated northern english automatic translator for "beck", elsewhere refered as stream or brook. The Roman helmet was found, on the rural area of the town. How the roman lost it ? Being identified as cavalry helmet, nothing else was found with it, probably taken by enemies who discarded it there ? Let´s walk reportages on England inspire further research.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh that's a good point - I perhaps should make the meaning of 'Beck' a little clearer, I'll remember that for future videos, so thank you very much for pointing that out! The story of the Guisborough Helmet is a fascinating one, and as you may have found out in further research, there are many different theories as to how it ended up there :) I do hope you have a fun time discovering more about things that peak your interest in these videos!
