It's been 5 long years of suffering since the original retina MacBook introduced the butterfly keyboard, but the day has finally come when the butterfly is dead! After years of fury and very little key travel Apple listened and stepped its game up with the 16 inch MacBook Pro and 2020 MacBook Air with Magic Keyboard. The problem is we still have 5 years of butterfly keyboards still out there, so are any of them worth buying? Are there any butterfly keyboard MacBooks that are still good? In this video we'll go into the history of the butterfly keyboard as well as talk about which ones are safe to buy!

So I bought the 2019 13 inch 256 gig MacBook Pro in November, and the E and shift key we’re just not clicking. And I could feel the switch broken because it felt as if there was a crumb in it. Anyway, I took it to the Apple store in December and during that time they had a program or something so they gave me an entirely new MacBook and I was like okay thank you, then they were like “oh we’re not done yet, we still owe you 215 bucks” and so they gave that to me and it left me in shock and I bought me some new AirPods Pro’s lol.

I bought the absolute cheapest new MacBook Pro w/o touchbar in December 2016 because i got a really good deal on an open box. Honestly, I used that laptop daily for video and design for almost 3 years with no issue. Traveling thousands of miles across the U.S. and to Europe. I accidentally broke my keyboard later last year (honestly it was my fault) and Apple still replaced the upper and lower assembly for free. I loved that computer even for its flaws. I sold it to a friend and just bought the 16” pro. I can’t fully speak to their objective quality, but they have always taken care of me.

But the price was right, the condition was excellent, and it has the i5, 16 gigs of RAM, and a 512 gig SSD. It’s been upgraded to Ventura. So here’s hoping, because I’m keeping it for a number of years. And I have no problem with the butterfly keyboard. Works fine to me.

@@ryanalencar Ryan, the only suggestion I can make based on my experience is to limit the time the computer sits exposed to the environment. Close the top when not in use, keep it in a bag/case. Maybe consider dry air blow cleaning the keyboard every so often (I have not had to do this, but it worth considering).

I'm late to the party but I had a 2018 MBA with the repeating key issue that of course became intolerable during the pandemic (which made repair quite difficult). I traded it in to Apple for $520 and purchased the M1 MBP base model. Worth it alone for the keyboard.

This video is so spot on Luke especially regarding avoiding ALL 12 inch models, couldn’t agree more - as a reseller I got a great deal on a 2016 m7 500GB MacBook which looked near brand new - paid just £270 without a charger.
I wanted to like it, i really did, but I just couldn’t. Hated the keyboard from the off and hilariously underpowered + the constant worry that it would cook itself to death or have a failed USB-C ruined it for me sold on a week later. It’s amazing how many immaculate but stone dead 12 inch MacBooks are out there already.

It looks like I got lucky. I bought my Macbook Pro over 6 yrs ago before Apple switched to the Butterfly and it continues to work great. This is my first Macbook and I have never had a PC work so well this long. This wasn't a cheap laptop at all. I paid around $2000 for a CTO with 16GB RAM & i7 processor. I had to cheap out on the hard drive 256 and 13" screen. The 13" makes it extremely portable. Oh, I love the MagSafe connector. With two kids, it has saved my Mac on many occasions.

I've got a 2015 12" Retina Macbook which I LOVE, and I (so far, knock on wood) haven't had that many issues with the keyboard. The keys that get stuck for me are the delete key, the power button, and "q." Whenever these keys get stuck I blow air on the area and then mash the key really hard over and over again until it's not stuck. In general I really don't hate this laptop at all, it's actually my favorite MacBook that Apple has come out with and I was so sad to see them discontinue it. At the hinge, it's only a hair thicker than my 2018 iPad Pro, and only weighs a little more. It was perfect for me as a daily driver because I have a huge gaming computer that I can't pack around. Also, the battery life on this thing even after 5 years is incredible.

Tried their Twitter support. They got back to me with, "your computer is currently being repaired"....Yeah...NO KIDDING!

I bought used MacBook Pro 2017 15 inch a year ago (late April), been using it for a year and i don't have any keyboard problems, and i adjusted to the shallow keys and i love it. I wasn't protecting it from a dust, i use it normally. I'm glad that it was originally bought in October, 2018, so i still have 2,5 (it had 3,5 when i bought) years of keyboard replacement coverage. It was top of the line CTO with i7 3.1Ghz (7920HQ), 16GB of RAM, Radeon Pro 560 GPU and 1TB SSD for $1900 with very light signs of wear. Honestly, apart for barely chipped left corner of display casing, and small scratches on the bottom of laptop and charger, it's like new. It came with original packaging and with Limited Warranty until late October, 2019 (as i said, i bought it on late April, 2019, so it has already ended by now).

Still using the 2015 MacBook 12”. And I honestly can say that this laptop is the best laptop I have ever owned or used. No, I don’t do very heavy stuff like video editing or graphic design on my Mac. I use is for administration, correspondence and online surfing but for those purposes it is a beautiful and fast laptop. No problems what so ever and the keyboard is working fine. Nice large keys and it doesn’t matter where I press it, it feels fantastic. To be fair, I have to say that I take good care of my MacBook. I clean it every couple of days, I don’t eat while I’m using the device and when I’m done, I close it and put it in a sleeve. It looks like it came out of the store a few hours a go. To sum it up: best laptop ever.....for me.

At 5 1/2 years old took it to an Apple store (bought it at a 3rd party retailer) because she was stupid and lived with the issue. Got told that with their service replacement programs they usually give a couple extra years coverage IF you bought it from Apple. However this is in the UK which I think is the law that the retailer has to cover 6 years for known product issues under consumer law. So if from the Uk and the device was purchased from Apple, it shouldn’t be a problem
