Les was hilarious when Michael Aspel was interviewing Jerry Lee Lewis, Les has already been interviewed & had moved along the seats, when Aspel asked Lewis what his favourite music was like a bullet Les said "The Wedding March". everyone laughed, Aspel paused in case Lewis was offended. I laughed. Fortunately Lewis did not walk off stage.

Les often appeared in pantomime at Christmas and more than once he appeared at a cinema next to my school. One day in January of 1976 or 77 probably I went into a local pub with a couple of mates for a quiet beer, it was a Monday night, and the panto didn't play on a Monday, it was the cast day off. Well bugger me but who was in there but Les Dawson also having a quiet drink at the bar and I don't think there were more than 8 people in there all told. We ended uphaving a rare old night, Les played the piano a bit (he was actually an accomplished pianist) and we chatted about everything and nothing as you do. He was a riot, he wasn't telling jokes but he was just soooo funny and that was him, it wasn't any kind of act. A nicer guy you really couldn't wish to meet and even though he was at the peak of his fame around that time, he had no airs and graces. He was just another bloke in the pub.... What a guy!

Alan, one thing you need to know about Les, when he was a young man and broke, he went to Paris to try his luck, he was offered a job playing piano in a club, it took him a while to realise he was actually the pianist in a parisien brothel. 😂

They were classic bits of comedy and the funniest parts were when one would say something unexpected and the other would try to contain their laughter. That was why they created the game in the first place.

    • @stephennewton2777

Les was merciless with Roy in those sketches - as soon as he could see Roy was starting to lose it he’d go off script to really make him crack 😂

    • @peterd788
      @peterd788 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@stephennewton2777 They created the characters together and would have an idea of where the sketch would go. Roy knew Les's jokes so well he would work in a lead in and there are cases where Les was caught off guard and on the verge of losing it as well. They never intended it to be anything other than a private game they played.

Les was a comedy genius, for his jokes, characters & his ability to pull a funny face, gurning. Also his ability to play the piano completely out of key, which showed his great musical ability. He was loved throughout the UK & after his death, some years later they made a special televised performance of him. He starred the show as a hologram in front of a celebrity audience. Great to see Les still being remembered.. Thank You! 👍🇬🇧🇺🇸

Wow...never thought anyone would get round to reacting to the legendary Les!!. The Cissie & Ada sketches - basically Les & his straight-man Roy Barraclough in drag - are hilarious. Especially funny when Les, half way through delivering a line would continue it by miming the 'rude word' thus forcing the audience to lip read. He also had a habit, as Roy said in interviews, of going 'off piste' and ad libbing most lines rather than sticking to the script. His mother in law gags were very funny one liners like , 'I'm not saying the mother in law was ugly but when she puts her lipstick on it backs into the tube'. He was a genius wordsmith with stuff like, 'I sat there and gazed up at the majesty of the cosmos, the stars shone like jewels against the inky blackness and I thought to myself....must repair the hole in the toilet roof' (or something like that!). His monologues are brilliantly funny. Sadly, he passed away suddenly in the mid 90's. RIP Les, you were damn funny to grow up with.

Les Dawson had a great comedic range. He ran the gamut from short mother-in-law one-liners to long, surreal monologues, while avoiding the casual racism that was all too common in stand-up of the time.
He did some great sketches too - look out for his "Cissy & Ada" routines. Hilarious!
He was a fairly accomplished novelist too, which many people aren't aware of.

Possibly because marriage isn't quite as commonplace in these days of civil partnerships, and families seem to be getting younger... if not in years, then in appearance. The stereotype of the mother-in-law as an old battleaxe in hair curlers doesn't work as well these days, when yer average M-I-L is just as likely to be a MILF ;)

Les was wonderful, he was an overnight success, well it took 16 years, but for someone whose outlook was always gloomy that's to be expected. His is the comedy of the North of England, his use of language in his monologues paints a picture of gloomy industrial streets populated by terrifying women. His drag act with Roy Barraclough is wonderful, an old woman with no teeth, who mouths words she doesn't want to say, lip reading was essential in those Lancashire cotton mills. Later he took over Blankety Blank a tatty game show, and made it into a comic masterpiece as he mixed attempted enthusiasm with weary contempt for it. He was an excellent pianist, his speciality though was playing badly for comic effect, which is harder than playing well. Yes do check him out.

My favourite was one where he was about to play on the piano “I was going to play Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony but then I decided against it because he never played any of mine!”

"You could always tell when the mother-in-law was about to arrive. The mice would start to throw themselves on the cat's dinner . . . . Trouble is, the cat had already escaped through an upstairs window!"

EB👍nothing like Les and his endless mother in law gags😂as well as a funny guy he was actually quite an accomplished pianist and for gags plays all the wrong notes in some routines. Cheers EB take care buddy ✌️🇬🇧✌️🇺🇸🍻🙏

I grew up watching Les Dawson and he has always made me laugh. We have had some great comedians and sitcoms over the years in the UK. You may like The Two Ronnies. They did some wonderful sketches.

I only watched Blankety Blank when Lee was on it. I remember him apologising to the winner because the prize was so rubbish. 😂😂😂

@electric beard great post . Les Dawsons " Blowing out the candle " joke is genius . His face IS the backbone of the joke . Only he could pull it off.
