I can't stop and I won't stop! But by addressing these concerns publicly, it means I'm not dealing with it alone. By calling out things that need to change, more of us can demand that change.
You're one of the few channels that I watch the entire video and it's been like this since day 1!! Sometimes I have to see how big the channel is because it feels so much bigger!! Your interviews are always something special 👍
Some good observations there Heath. The world, including TH-cam, has changed in recent years... and, I fear, not for the better. Keep up the good work.
I love the fact you mentioned Blu-ray as a gateway to an experience. It is about the experience Blu-ray discs help provide. It's so much more than just collecting shiny discs and cool packaging - it's about a gateway to watching films and to getting the best kind of experience while watching them.
Thanks! 'Keep on Keeping on' - made it to the end - and what your saying about how things are - I've heard other shows, other good shows - say the same. I've also loss some interest in a few channels that seem to be (reluctantly) bowing to these 'pressures'. If you can stick to the 'Content is king' philosophy if you can.
Thank you! I really appreciate the encouragement and support. I believe when you put people first, work hard, and have integrity, things have a way of working out.
Thanks for doing this video. More and more creators on youtube are talking about the changes on the platform and the changes in leadership. It is very sad. They seem to be getting desparate and just making all kinds of changes that do not benefit their creators, which is who made them, and their viewers in turn. I have been a big fan of the platform, but I am seeing more and more of the creators I respect ( I count you as one of them) with this same message and it is really reminding me of the glory days when people really had their own sites, blogs, and other properties that they controlled. I think we are all going to be heading back that direction as these huge media platforms do nothing but serve themselves and forget who made them. Keep up the great work.
Hey man, thanks. Yeah, it's true, this platform has changed so much in the last few years, it's barely recognizable from what it was when I started. TH-cam has become so big that I think it's being run almost entirely by AI now. I think you're right, we're all headed back to having our own sites, blogs and places we can control. I don't plan to leave TH-cam, but the writing is on the wall. Time for me to start focusing on other avenues too.
It's all about outlasting the trials and continuing to move forward. Like Liam Neeson, I have a particular set of skills and I know most of the folks who work at the labels I cover, so I need to lean further into some paying gigs. You're right, though, too many people think they can get rich by making a few videos that go viral. There is no shortcut to success and no substitute for hard work.
I'm like you bro, I've been collecting since the vhs era. I'm 51 years old and have seen it all from the old laserdiscs then a never version of laserdiscs all the way to 4k. I'm now disabled and can't work but still enjoy movies. It's my escape from reality for just a moment. Keep up the fight for physical media we need it.
Bro I'm 53 and began collecting in 1984 with VHS all the way to the recent 4K. I too I'm disabled but work per-diem as a translator since all I do is talk. At one time I wanted to work in the movies in the special f/x department but I didn't have the resources to travel to CA and study. Are you into streaming? I don't stream physical media forever.👍
My friend, your channel is the best of the best. I appreciate your integrity, honesty, and passion for film and physical media. You deserve all the success that comes your way. I’ll support your channel as much as I can. And hopefully a lot more soon. I hope you know how much you contribute to this community. Your a big reason why I get so excited for buying my favorite movies and shows. Thank you, Heath.
Most people probably don't remember the old days before everyone wanted to make youtube their career. A lot of my favorite channels are still just regular people who share their hobby or passion by uploading some interesting stuff from time to time. They are the most credible but it is infinitely more rare to find these types nowadays. You strike a good balance Heath I am going to consider supporting you
Here's the crazy thing: TH-cam as a platform pushes us toward monetization, growth, and even direct competition by showing the creators other channels and how many views their videos are getting and how many subscribers they have. It's all very manipulative. Sometimes it feels like a shakedown: "we want one-minute videos to compete with TikTok. We'll reward those videos with monetization, an algorithm push, and we'll make sure people see your work. If you don't start making one minute videos, well...that's your choice..." TH-cam as a platform punishes channels that stay on one place. Before you know it, you're posting 5 videos a week just to keep the audience you've already built. I've got over 1,000 videos on this channel and it's really about 10-20 that are driving almost all of the growth and traffic---and those are the ones TH-cam is pushing. Thanks for considering support.
The first time I saw one of your videos I knew within the first 30 seconds I had to support the channel. Since I don't have anyone to dive into movies, cartoons ,and music with (except one coworker) I can come hang out with my buddy Heath. Thank you for all your hard work.
Heath, do you think you'll ever get to the point where space issues will force you to choose between music and movies when it comes to physical media? Also, the fact that you are 'out of step with everyone else' is partly why I relate so well to you.
I hope I never get to that place where I have to choose fandoms. However, I do need to cut back on the amount of media I have in my house. I have too much. I have more than I need and I have more than I'll ever be able to watch, read, or listen to. That's one of the reasons I've decided to store as many movies as possible in sleeves, to try to get it back under control and take charge of it. But I also have thousands of records, novels, and comic books that are taking up way too much room in the house and have really impacted the quality of life of my family in a very real, very negative way. It's an ongoing problem.
@@CerealAtMidnight thanks for taking the time to answer me so thoughtfully. I hope you get it under control without having to compromise too much. But gun to your head, would you rather go fully digital with music or movies? I know, unfair question.
Is this comment addressed toward me? I've gotten rid (donated and sold) about 1,000 discs in the last year. I also would never call myself an influencer. However, we manifest our own destinies, and that's one of the purposes of this video.
I've thought for a while that you'd be a great guest on The Filmcast podcast. Your knowledge, wit, and general enthusiasm would fit like a glove with the dynamic the three co-hosts bring each week. They often bring someone on with expertise in the genre they're focusing on that week.
The movie community is something I am very proud of and you represent the great side of it. Even when I don’t agree with your takes I appreciate your honest opinions. Keep up the great work.
Love your channel man is really good, your knowledge on the medium is mind blowing and the fact you keep things down to earth is great. I get lost in other channels when they start going on with technicalities when all i care is just a "regular persons" review but with insights on the story behind the product that has nothing to do with "frames", "dpi" or all that technical nonsense. Also is great to se that when a mystery comes out, you put your detective hat and keep asking questions behind the scenes until you get an answer, sometimes it may not happen but you put the effort and i think that is what it counts. So in short words, keep up the good work my friend!
Always have admired your work ethic and your very passionate but level-headed way of approaching all sorts of topics when it comes to collecting, art, censorship, etc. You seem like a very down to earth guy and I will continue to support you the best I can. I do wish to rejoin patreon at some point but I'm waiting until I get a job.
You do you Heath, but since I'm comfortable determining on my own what movies I like and want to own, what I enjoy most about your videos (besides your charisma and articulate comments) is your just letting me know which movies (and in what format) are being released. If you let me know that Only Angels Have Wings or The Great Caruso is being released in 4K, I'd snap them right up. I often buy movies during or after watching your videos. But generally not because you recommend them. If you discussed why so few musicals are released in 4K, I'd love to know about that. You make me aware. You're the best at doing that. Thanks for that.
I appreciate that. The challenge of being a "new release guy" is that it puts me in a very small box. Those videos are almost immediately dated and have no shelf life. It's disposable content, which doesn't serve the longevity of the channel. Once you've seen it, you never need to watch it again. Interviews have a much longer shelf life and bring new people to the channel and so do the longer-form reviews from people wondering if a particular movie is worth adding to their collection, but the challenge there is deciding what will reach the most people. I'd love to have a team of people and a network where I could really tackle all of the things I want to cover, like movies, music, comics, novels, and even video games. That's definitely a future goal.
Great message Heath - keep doing you brother. I’ll be signing up happily to continue supporting you. “F” those sponsors lol and their personal intrusiveness 😅
I selected notifications for all your vids. That way TH-cam doesn’t get to pick and choose. As for other topics, If you are into bronze silver and golden age comics collected editions and Omnibuses that would interest me
Heath, you’re doing an awesome job! You are my favorite physical media channel. I guess, I just don’t understand exactly what is going on with YT. I understand what they are doing with analytics, but I just hit “subscriptions” and it’ll tell me if there is a new video from you. Isn’t that what most people do?
Apparently no, most people are not looking at subscriptions. Less than half of the people watching my videos are subscribed. And of those that do subscribe, On average, 10% or less of them are watching my videos. Thank you for subscribing and for checking those subscriptions to see my latest videos!
@@CerealAtMidnight ok, thanks for the reply. Just know there are a many loyal people behind you, that want to help you and your channel succeed and thrive. We don’t want you to go anywhere:) I understand the frustration/concern of “what might happen”, however, it doesn’t mean it will happen. Just continue to let us know how we can help. We are here for you Heath!
Thanks for a great video. Your channel is one the few I know that are brutally honest about the products/content you produce (The only other I know is "Tolarian Community College" - a channel about Magic: The Gathering"=. It's only been the past few months I've really begun caring (and collecting) about psychical media - as a curated collection. I've bought plenty of releases previously, but this year I've actively bought Boutique releases. As a neurodiverse person, I recognise your psychology teachers comment - and couldn't be more to have found your channel.
i love listening to your different takes on movies, ways to store them, and the unscripted stuff. i have almost 4000 movies now and have alot i have never seen that i need to find time to watch. i buy mystery boxes and surf ebay way to much just to add to my movie collection. i think i have a movie addiction lol.
I do like the videos where you show what's out but I have been not watching these for a couple of months while I can't afford anything. Hopefully I'll be back up and running soon. Still checking out other videos you make, like this one and your recent sleeeves video. And, if nothing else, great to know you're still around!
Dude, regardless of how often I watch someone's channel, if I miss one video, TH-cam will stop sending me alerts when new videos are available. Then I have to go out and look that channel up again. It shows I'm still subscribed but I have to watch a video in order to receive alerts again. I mean, that's really draconian.
Im pretty excited for the Film Masters release of The Giant Gila Monsters and The Killer Shrews double feature bluray coming out next week. Preordered it right after your interview with them.
I have the disc on hand and The Giant Gila monster is GORGEOUS. It's a great package. I'll be doing a review this month's Fresh Flavors episode, which is gonna be packed because September is HUGE.
'Selling out' doesn't have to be bad, but 'not selling out' is always good.. maybe that makes sense? Anyways your work is always appreciated as the landscape continues to change. Thank you.
I admire and appreciate your honesty, passion, and hard work. You've been consistent since day one and it really means a lot. Your knowledge when it comes to films is second to none. I wish you nothing but success and good health moving forward. Whatever happens later down the road I'll be there to support you. Keep doing what are you doing. Thanks, Heath! As always, I appreciate everything that you've done and that you continue to do moving forward! God bless and stay safe!
What do you do if you and your uncle live in different states and you send him blu rays to watch and when he mails them back they all have big greasy hand prints on the bottom side of the disc and one of the discs is all scratched up on the top side?
I wouldn't have sent them to my uncle in the first place! Never loan books or movies. You're lucky to get them back at all. Most loans end up being gifts.
I just bought Tentacles, a movie I only knew of because you mentioned it on the films at home podcast and it sounded like something I would enjoy but probably never would have found on my own.
I'm keeping an eye on Rumble. The problem right now is that the audience still hasn't shown up for that platform, so it would be more work for a very, very small audience. If it takes me an extra hour to post something there that only gets a few hundred views, I'm not sure that was time well spent. I'm definitely considering it, though.
@@CerealAtMidnight I will say I've tried moving over there and it has been a pain in the behind. Their sync system LOOKS to be easy and great but I've waited many many months and my old catalogue of videos has not ported over. ONLY some of my newly uploaded videos since I synced has appeared, not all of them. I like that Rumble is an alternative but it really needs some work.
That would have been amazing. I guess there's still a chance that something like that could happen one day, but TCM has been gutted to the bone and the people who turned it into the brand we all love have mostly been fired or have quit because of David Zaslav's leadership decisions at WB.
Keith, I really enjoy The Movie Collector. Maybe you have seen his channel. An interview is needed! He dives into the discs AND some history of the film. I see your joy evolving into something different than his, yet exploring a different narrative!
Heath, you should contact ETR Media about making a Blu-ray disc release of your best TH-cam videos. I know ETR Media has done some Vinegar Syndrome partner label releases of titles with TH-cam videos (such as the Sega making-of documentaries). This might be a cool way to release a "Cereal at Midnight" Blu-ray release. I know you said in an earlier video you liked the idea of releasing a Blu-ray with some of your TH-cam videos someday. This might be a good way to do so.
I dont play video games anymore so.i cant speak on which systems do what, but the ps3 used to let u watch dvds at 1.5 speed. When it comes to new movies, and not having time, i would turn it to 1.5 speed and watch and if the movie was real good i would play at normal speed. Saved me so much time. I wish that were a standard feature on all players
I'll just be a broken record here and again state how GOOD my dude is at interviews. Dude finds awesome people to talk to, asks questions from the heart, and then gives them the space to answer. Always 10/10 fricheks
I always appreciate your kind words and support! The interviews are starting to get more and more attention, but they still pale in comparison to haul videos and new release coverage. I'm grateful for all views, but I would love to see the journalism stuff connect with more folks.
I write for DELIRIUM magazine and do work with CULTURE SHOCK RELEASING. I'd love to be on your channel to speak about physical media. Just let me know!
Not yet. Someone else asked the same thing and this is what I said: I'm keeping an eye on Rumble. The problem right now is that the audience still hasn't shown up for that platform, so it would be more work for a very, very small audience. If it takes me an extra hour to post something there that only gets a few hundred views, I'm not sure that was time well spent. I'm definitely considering it, though.
I enjoy the interviews! Made it till the end. Will you be having Frank Tarzi on again this year? We need them to work on “Armed and Dangerous” w/ John Candy…better than Uncle Buck imo.
As much as I love to hear you talking about movies more than 40h of work is just to much to do it constantly. I wish you to find balance and time to rest 🙂
I miss Eight8TheChosenOne, but I can see why youtube deleted his entire youtube channel. He would not compromise his freedom of speech and that is a good thing.
This is what happens when monopolies are allowed. It all started going downhill when Google bought youtube. Facebook bought instagram. X bought Twitter. Amazon bought twitch. Etc. You can't have independent platforms anymore, because they are either sold to monopolies, or the monopolies destroy them, then buy it.
Heath, do the best thing you can do in life as a creator: write a book or shoot a documentary. Make something that stands the test of time - in physical form. Everything else is smoke and mirrors. I have written my PHD on a nerdy topic (Tolkien) and apart from family this has been the best thing in my entire life.
I consider myself a writer, first and foremost, but what I've discovered is that the audience I've built on TH-cam doesn't want to read, so I feel like I need to build a reading audience somewhere else. If I wrote a book today, I'm not sure who would buy it. Unfortunately, TH-cam trains people that all this hard work should be given away for free. But you're right, and I need to take the plunge.
I for one would be very excited if you published a book and would be a reader for sure! I'm working on a book about silent-era Hollywood, and I so appreciate your enthusiasm and knowledge of Hollywood history. It's inspiring to me. Thank you, Heath!
@@CerealAtMidnight Great to hear that writing a book is something you consider. I would highly encourage you to proceed with this. Watching your recent videos I see a man with so much knowledge and talent who is frustrated working in the capitalist and hysterical world of TH-cam and modern social media (despite your passion for your nice community). I have the feeling that TH-cam is not your final destination but hopefully only a step for better and more meaningful things to come. I love your work here but would highly encourage you to follow your dreams if they lie elsewhere. I could definitely see you as a film scholar, archivist or someone working for a film institution. I hope this does not come across as patronising. It is just the impressions I get from filling your channel with love and passion.
It doesn't come off as patronizing at all! It's encouraging. Someone I know and trust recently told me "you're a journalist, not a TH-camr" and I think that's very, very true. TH-cam is a great tool to connect with an audience, but the danger is that it can become a final destination and swallow the creator whole--which is what I'm fighting against. My goal now is to figure out what my next step is without losing all the progress I've made by connecting to the great folks here.
So... does no one just go to the "Subscriptions" tab of their channel and watch that? Pretty sure that's all you have to do to see all the videos of the channels you're subscribed to... 🤔
Very, very few people seem to be doing that. Over half of everyone watching my videos is not subscribed. Of the half that IS subscribed, only about 10% of them are watching most of my videos. That's 9 out of every 10 people who subscribe to me that aren't watching.
I would love to hear you have a conversation with Adam from YMS about the state of modern movies, you both have very different perspectives (Ironically, the guy from Your Movie Sucks has a more positive view.) and I want to hear you talk about it.
Hi heath, question, ever got rid of a disc and regretted it? I'm currently got 2 movies on my list I wanna get back, 17 again and bring it on (the OG). Got rid of them and want them back, they are relics of my childhood, and teen years. Bring it on I saw at age 6 on VHS borrowed from a friend's older sister (yeah not the best choice, but whatever) and 17 again I went opening weekend to see that on the big screen. So far I've got back all of the ones I wanted but those 2. (Had a list of like 6 titles)
I know I have, but I can't think of any examples at the moment. I used to think some of these movies would be around forever, but now I know that's not the case. Now I only get rid of a disc if I have a complete lack of interest. I hope you can find the two movies still on our list!
Important (and very on-topic) question: is that the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan collection over your left shoulder?? LOL, just noticing it now. If so, one of my fav sets. (Also: pretty sure SHINY PLASTIC DISCS is a Radiohead outtake.)
"It will give you whatever it thinks you want to see-- really what it wants you to see..." Off-topic: that's true of me when it comes to news-- remember the saying "Old news is no news"? Here lately, I'm out of step with my family when it comes to this, in that I believe very much the opposite, both about television news and about print news (basically, on the first front, I believe that new news is no news, and that old news of long ago is far more engaging to me than today's "hot take" style of opinionated news [in essence, I believe that, say, an old newscast from KPRC of Houston from 1985 is far more engaging to me than anything that FOX "News" or Newsmax these days has in the way of politics]). Similarly, I'm not going to pay $3 or $4 for today's overcompressed "newspapers" with practically nothing in them, when I can get a good-sized one from the past (I have a huge collection of such, mostly from the U.S.; also a few from Canada) from EBay; many of them do and have cost a pretty penny, but I'd much rather pay a pretty penny for an engaging newspaper from way-back-when in my youth, and many times before that, than to waste money these days for a rag that doesn't have all that much to engage with.
Thus is slightly off topic. However when you get the opportunity I just found our about a new (to me) serial named "Drum Of Fu Manchu". I think that it would be great if you could do an episode about it for Serials At Midnight when you have the time. If such a time come avout.
Yes, I think that's true. We've been asleep for a long time and we're starting to wake up. I hope everyone realizes that we aren't out of control, we are the economy that drives the world.
Whoever this person is complaining about you just doing unboxing videos, ummm, you need to pay a little more attention to Cereal At Midnight. I have not seen a unboxing video in a long time. That’s rookie stuff for Heath.

Good luck dude - when YT decides to ‘flip the switch’ off on a channel it’s pretty much game over - speaking from experience 😂
Your experience is horrifying and I'm so sorry you've gone through it.
Thank you!
Heath I remember not to long ago you were on 600 subs glad your channel has grown so much for you.
Thanks, man!
The interviews have been great. Thanks for all you do Heath!
Thanks for checking the interviews out!
I selected notifications for all your vids. That way TH-cam doesn’t get to pick and choose.
As for other topics, If you are into bronze silver and golden age comics collected editions and Omnibuses that would interest me
God bless you for your attitude about sponsorships, Heath. You are sincerely an inspiration to me.
Be the best you ignore the rest.
i love listening to your different takes on movies, ways to store them, and the unscripted stuff. i have almost 4000 movies now and have alot i have never seen that i need to find time to watch. i buy mystery boxes and surf ebay way to much just to add to my movie collection. i think i have a movie addiction lol.
This is exactly what I'm talking about. They're burying creators. It's such a hot mess!
@@CerealAtMidnight well you're doing great work. Thanks for all the wonderful content.
I love Heath, he is a great person and his personality and good character comes through in every video.
Thanks for the candor. Eye opening.
As for the Indiana Jones/boulder thing - just remember Xeno's paradox 😉
Nice to see you make an appearance on RMB’s channel. Very unexpected, like a crossover episode of a beloved tv show 😢👍
Heath you physical media reviews are the best..........We LOVE them.....!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tentacoli! I hope you dig it.
I enjoy your TH-cam channel a lot man 😎!
Rumble. Not suggesting you move, just throw this stuff up there TOO. Build an audience over there as a backup if things get too weird over here.
Good to know!
I have always wished TCM would make you a regular,
That would have been amazing.
One of these days, someone is going to step up and give youtube some real competition.
Boy are you out of step!! Thank God keep it up 👍
Heath, you should contact ETR Media about making a Blu-ray disc release of your best TH-cam videos.
I wish that were a standard feature on all players
love the channel....made it to the end
Its because of you that I really have a love for collecting.....Thank you...
That's such a nice thing to say! Bless ya.
Cereal midnight rules Heath keep it up 👍👍😎😎
TH-cam showed me this video before you filmed it
Asking someone’s age is illegal and unconstitutional.
The info that's being passed around with the goal of selling us crap we don't need is alarming.
Yes! That would be a great interview 😎
You on Rumble?
Also, Love the channel. Just not sure I understand what's so great about "Kino Lorber" or whatever they're called.
Heath, I’m waiting for you to open the video saying that you’re sponsored by Tempur Pedic. 😂😂😂
I enjoy the interviews! Made it till the end. Will you be having Frank Tarzi on again this year? We need them to work on “Armed and Dangerous” w/ John Candy…better than Uncle Buck imo.
Frank and I plan to talk again very soon. I expect it to be revealing!
As much as I love to hear you talking about movies more than 40h of work is just to much to do it constantly. I wish you to find balance and time to rest 🙂
I always watch your most recent videos, yet TH-cam still tries to push old videos on me!
So weird. I'm glad they're pushing older videos, but my newer videos should take priority, in my opinion.
I miss Eight8TheChosenOne, but I can see why youtube deleted his entire youtube channel. He would not compromise his freedom of speech and that is a good thing.
Heath, you need to develop your own streaming empire with all the content you own 😉.
I agree 100%.
That's awesome! I wish you all the best with your book and I hope to hear more about it when it's completed!
Heath could you sell your own commentary tracks like the guys at Rifftrax? That might be cool.
That's an interesting idea! I've got about 10 of them here on the channel and on Patreon, but I've never thought of selling them. Thanks!
Seconded! I’d love that and would buy some.
Important (and very on-topic) question: is that the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan collection over your left shoulder?? LOL, just noticing it now. If so, one of my fav sets. (Also: pretty sure SHINY PLASTIC DISCS is a Radiohead outtake.)
Yep, that's both volumes of the Weissmuller Tarzan sets!
One of the channel's that does sponsors right is fact fiend. They out right state how much they were paid and where the money goes.
This video fills me with rage and hate.
I'm so sorry to hear that! I don't want anything I do to be connected with rage or hate.
@@CerealAtMidnight You know I'm messin with ya!! :)
I ONLY watch the unscripted vids
"It will give you whatever it thinks you want to see-- really what it wants you to see..."
Off-topic: that's true of me when it comes to news-- remember the saying "Old news is no news"?
I love the love for serials! Has it been recently restored or released on Blu-ray? The only thing I can find is a 20 year old DVD from VCI.
I think that in general there is a sense of dread, don't you think? Like in general, culturally...
TH-cam AI sucks.
