These specials were aired at a time when the commercial TV networks were the outlet for classical music on the small screen. (The Bernstein specials were aired on CBS.)
Bernstein became somehow eternal through his music. As long as there will be people to listen to it, there will exist a part of him through his music. Now I understand why it is said that that Bernstein in one of the musicians with the widest music understanding.

"Also Sprach Zarathustra" was first performed in 1896, the same year that also saw the first performance of Puccini's operatic masterwork, "La Boheme ". Bernstein performed and recorded "Boheme " in his later years.
His Young People’s Concert could only be enjoyed by musicians or music majors. I’ve taught Elementary Music Education for 40 years and no way could my students compare what he’s talking about.
@RatnipTX I am a young music ed major so take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but I think you need to do them in order of appearance and give some explainations along the way.

As much as I liked Mr Bernstein, I am so glad that I never had to sit through one of chatty concerts. Love the music. Love the Orchestra.

The idea of ending a work in two keys had been borrowed from Strauss to end a famous musical based on Romeo and Juliet.
Is this for Young People ?
They was the target audience but it was designed specifically so that people of any background and musical education could enjoy it
