If you're not motivated for school but you can get up for entrepreneurship and work your butt off, that might be a sign to look more into entrepreneurship. Don't ignore your energy.

But if you’re not motivated for school you won’t be motivated for entrepreneurship. Being motivated for school is doing the nitty gritty, boring work that is required when starting a business.
People like to work hard to be an entrepreneur because it sounds sexy, until they quit after they face their first problem
@@benjaminsibson8760 Replying to my original comment and yours after a year or so of more experience. I still stand by the original statement, however, you do have a fair point. So here's how I would word it differently:
If you're not motivated for school (because you know you're not developing the skills and self-awareness needed for entrepreneurship) but you can get up -for entrepreneurship- (to learn and improve on the side), that might be a sign to look more into entrepreneurship. Don't ignore your energy. (Furthermore, if you're only in it to make money, get out of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is NOT easy. I repeat, NOT easy. You will feel like you're grinding yourself to death at certain times. If you want to just make a lot of money, get into computer science or medical, etc. A profession that can make you a lot of money. I'm telling you right now, since the roadmap to becoming an engineer or doctor is already mapped out and clear, you just have to hit your goals.)
Basically, if you're trying to flex: stop. Entrepreneurship is not for you. Get a nice job and learn how to invest in a smart manner (not get rich quick) and you'll have your money. But yes, to your point Benjamin, the title "entrepreneur" or "CEO" has been glorified much like "being a rapper".

To add to this, I would say that if you do end up taking the entrepreneurship route, get ready to get out of your comfort zone and do things that make you EXTREMELY uncomfortable. You will face problems that you will find impossible to crack until you actually crack them. You will question yourself and your faith in yourself nearly every day. Like I said, it's not easy.

I'd say schools are implementing communism-enforced capitalism.
No free market, you HAVE to buy exactly those books for those courses, AND we'll maximize our profits out of the books we're forcing you to buy. No free choice like in capitalism, no low prices / redistributed wealth like ideal communism. The worst of both worlds, monopoly of the market.
Capitalism shouldn't be in school. All those supplies, books and activities should be funded by the school which got it's funds from the government or some other governmental entity.
@Jason Bourne I didn't even mention communism? I just said there should be government funded programs for children and school which cannot afford school supplies and something similar. That is not communism or socialism, it's a human right.
The US has a compulsory 12 year education that has degraded because too many underperforming 1:53 students stay in it. It would be better for the non academics oriented students to go to trade schools, work or the military.

As a 25-year-old. I completely agree with everything you've said. I figured all of this out after a couple years in college. Since I switched from Chemistry to Business major, I wish I could of dropped out, parents wouldn't allow me to though. In my senior year finally after wasting so much time going part-time and working. Finally actually taking classes that do anything with business. They don't even let you take classes to do with your major until you're half way through your junior year because they know they're a waste, and they just want to take your money.
in my country university is either free or not more than $1k a year and the only thing you learn that has "nothing to do" with your major is english

I'm just like you! But stay in school. Like the video says, if your lazy, stay in school. Develop that mental strength where you can dominate that "emotionally dragging studying" because that'll probably help you in the future.
Learning how to get it done despite the emotional drag... Might just be the best thing college could teach you.
If you like to do it, its not discipline. Discipline is doing what you need to do even though you don't want to do it.
As a high school student, I have the same feelings as you do. I would stay in university to develop that self-discipline if I were you, especially since all of your money and time would be wasted if you do drop out since you wouldn't get that piece of paper by dropping out. As others have already said, self-discipline is about finishing seemingly-daunting tasks that require effort and pain to finish without procrastinating, even though you don't want to do it. I suggest for you to find reasons that are bigger than excuses if you're a procrastinator.
And to think these numbers are outdated and it’s only gotten worse in 2023

"Who said you need to go to college from 18 to 22?" I am so glad that I didn't enter college right away. I had some money saved up and decided to travel since I didn't yet know what I wanted. In that year of travel, I learned a second language, met amazing new people and landed a job as a translator. I wouldn't have had those experiences had I went straight into university.
S B In my 2nd year of college and feel like I’m getting nowhere. The classes I have to take are useless. One class is internet tools, another is abnormal psychology. These classes have nothing to do with my degree.

I’ve been talking about a gap year with my parents for a few years now and I only have a few months left before I decide to go to college or take a gap year. I know with confidence that I would be happier on a gap year and that I need some time to mature and reflect on life. However, here in Ireland you can’t defer scholarships, so I’d be losing out on €20,000 if I took a gap year. I personally would rather go without the money, but my parents are mostly paying for uni and they want the money so I get called selfish for talking about gap years.
I couldn't agree more. I am 21 years old with no college degree. I do however own and operate my own business, I have 1 employee, am currently studying to get my real estate license, I regularly invest in myself, and I take care of my 86 year old grandmother that raised me. I made my choice to become an entrepreneur because I had a reoccurring problem; I couldn't hold a job. This wasn't because I didn't have good work ethic, it was because there was a limit to how much I could earn every hour/week. I am the type of person that needs to be compensated based on the amount of effort I put forth. If I make nothing then it is because I am not doing something correctly. The opposite is also true; if I am successful, it is because of my effort, ambition, and ability to learn from others mistakes, not because of a college degree. I advocate education; whether that is in the form of a degree or not should be based on your personal circumstances and characteristics.

I dropped out of college after the first semester when I was 17 years old. I had graduated high school half a year early. when I turned 18, I began investing money in businesses. Several crashed businesses, many mentors, lots of books, and even 90 hour work weeks, have finally found a model which works best for me. by March 2017 the anticipated profits on my end will be 4500 United States dollars per month. Also, I will be able to run the business anywhere in the world. I will be able to travel the world and not even work so much. After getting my fill of travel, likely sometime in November December, I will be scaling the business up and the anticipated profits will be six figures by March 2018.
I'm not saying this to brag. My point is that I knew what I wanted in life and I took a step back and realize that college was a great hindrance to what I wanted. Figure out what you want, and then go for it. More times than not, college is absolutely not the answer. my education will never end though.

What you were saying about the peer pressure from parents is totally true. I have been going to schools which are seen as schools for generally wealthier people, and the amount of pressure most parents in these type of schools put on their kids to go to universities or colleges "that have a good name" is insane. The funny thing is most of the pressure is not even about the learning environment or the standard of education that those colleges or universities have, but the parents trying to boast about how intelligent their kids are and how prestigious the schools are that they attend.
It's almost like a competition where the parent which has their kids in the best school wins all the respect. It is really sad that most wealthier parents don't even recognize the damage this does to their kids as their kids don't even persuade careers they want, solely because of the parents sense of self-importance.

Luckily, I did not experience that. I've dropped my Electrical Engineering program before the finals of my first semester because of extremely unmotivated unlike on my High School days before. Now, I would go back to school to study Mechanical Engineering and I preferably to study on an average school WITH quality education. And my parents would let me do that.

Idk what you want to do with your life, but my number one advice to you is find someone who has what you want and either buy their course, or be their mentee. I'm literally sitting here crying, because I'm apparently stressed out and didn't even realize it until now. I have to work because I have no family or friends, mother's dead. I'm not making as much money as I want/need to even get an apartment for myself so I'm forced to go to college just to have somewhere to stay. But I'm literally about to fail an entire semester of college because I just can't focus on anything and I've gotten so behind that I can't even catch up and nothing makes sense. I just submitted an exam blank. I just couldn't do it. I just gave up. Just locked up and said, "I can't even B.S. this." I don't even know why I'm in college anymore. I don't know. I'm just here. I'm just taking this major because I knew I didn't want the career I intended on doing. But then these people have invested so much money on me just to survive during the times I had no where to live, and want me to finish college.. But I can't finish college if I can't even pass them due to falling behind and getting lost. College is not paying my bills right now, my job is. Therefore I probably have been 100% more focused on how to make more money than I have, how to pass this class that's putting me into more debt.
I would drop out, get a nice tiny apartment right next to your job, keep it really clean, organized, and bright. Make some vision boards for the walls as well. Create daily routines and schedules, that will lower your stress a lot. Then make it a goal to be really good at your job, to love it, make it a game and aim for a promotion. In your off time, start learning on your own, gain skills, make learning goals, achieve them and make more. It's kind of a wordy read but a book called Flow teaches how to find happiness in anything you do; you need that skill the most in tough times

Stay in college. If your mom died and you are actually on your own, apply as an independent and you’ll get a full ride (if you’re in the states at least idk about anywhere else). Then get a higher paying job. If you can’t pass your classes it’s unlikely you’ll make it as an entrepreneur to be honest with ya. But if it’s more of a mental health thing then get that straightened out first and foremost brother 👍. Best of luck

Hi, i have a big question. People go to universities, high school etc, because they are principaly afraid of doing no money or not good money without a degree. And they think that to get a good job that gives good money, you need a degree. In this world today, can every drop out or most of them find a good well paying job ( even with promotion and time, a good career without a degree ) ?
I'm not talking about entrepreneurship cause it depends if you start from zero or a job or other case.
That's why personnally, i continue to going to college to study digital marketing ( And for the 1 year of entrepreneurship what i wanted to make, i think i can succeed maybe without it but i will see).
Because i can't see myself have a good job, or good career without a degree and so without good money, even in sales and commission. And if i need some money before starting a compagny. (Here in france, only sales jobs earn good in commission, not real estate agents. And in the top of that, business owners commission like Trivago can do a lot of money but it's for entrepreneurs).
And yes, this side of the world is not shared at school because they want your money and school is made by entrepreneurs i agree.
AND i want to notice that in France, studies cost for me NOTHING compared to the debt poor US and others countries students have to PAY for. I pay my university only 164 per YEAR. And the only universities that cost a lot are the best. Commerce universities are costing a bit more but compared to US that's actually nothing.
I'm from France and asked this question that every day goes to my brain. I wanted to make know you the situation in France that schools CAN make less but when DONT WANT specially in US. It depends of the owner.

My path in few words :
(4 YEARS more of studies before beginning job+ 1 YEAR of master enterpreneurship), i'm actually 19.
= Digital marketer, minimum 3k/month - max 10k / month
+ if i can transit to entrepreneurship via a compagny created or if a owner ask me to manage for him.
+ Investing in real estate and pay 0 tax if I can (Even Amazon do it cause it's legal)
But if I drop out, can I or other one find a good job career without degree, so i can be more sure that doing entrepreneurship (to save some money before create it) and investing in real estate would be possible ?
I ask this question to for the drop outs and my friend. Big big thanks to you.
PS : Maybe one day, someone will do like Uber have done, make a university, more effective and cheap but it's profitable for them and everyone will be happy.

I think this is one of the most valuable videos on TH-cam this time, I'm from India and people in my country have wrong attitude or wrong approach towards education and learning as most of them either under peer pressure or under the influence of parents end up in engineering,medical colleges without knowing the actual reason why they are really there apart from the reason of playing a role of engineer in their jobs which most of them are not capable of not because of the education system but because of their attitude towards choosing such a course . I think Mr Patrick has done a wonderful job doing this video and I really appreciate that it will help us and future generations to come .
yes. i myself just started my path as an entrepreneur this year. I just dropped out of Marquette University because I realized I did it simply as a robot and out of peer pressure so yeah. I have always questioned the system even as a str8 A student. Then after reading a few books, I came across the cashflow queadrant and realized I did not want to make money just from the E quadrant, but from the B and I quadrant
Keep questioning it. And remember that being an entrepreneur isn't as flashy and exciting as people make it out to be. It's all about an absolute obsession to work hard while constantly looking for the optimal solution to any challenge you come across in business.

Well, in IT experience and certificates are king and queen in that expertise. I plan, after graduating with a BS in IT, to be a network administrator. Later in life, I also plan to be a network architect.

Dropout here as well, after paying myself a few years of university, and when finally gave up the idea of paying further, in favor of leaving the country to follow my dreams in a different country, having bought a plane ticket(one way only) with money borrowed from friends(because I was bankrupt at that moment).
how did it work out?
It worked out decently. I have my own business(a creative agency) after 3 years in the UK(while working for other people), employing a few people so far(after 2 years more, since I started).

I did finish and went on for a MBA, but I felt exactly the same while my family absolutely did not! I must say that watching your videos I find it fascinating how much honest, realistic, and positive you are as a person. I came from the rock bottom in a small country and everyone in my environment were so judgmental towards rich and successful people. Constantly saying how they are all crooks and bad people and that they've accomplished everything with frauds, and criminal, which is often case over here. But I always wanted to be successful and maintain my honesty and values and even though everyone told me it's impossible I kept going, and right now I work for an amazing agency and my CEO told me to watch your videos to educate myself, and I am more than grateful both to him and to you. I see you as a role model and a living proof that you can be successful and well situated without being pure evil on two legs. So thank you. :)

I just started my sophomore year of college and I’m really starting to make a plan to drop out. This video has really helped me and I am definitely going to use it as a way to explain myself to my parents and others, so they have the same resources in their own arguments as why I should stay. At this moment I just feel like I’m waisting my time and my parents money because I really don’t know what I want to do, and I feel like I’m too young to really understand the true value that college can have on my life. I dropped out and then went back. In the 1st year I was not getting into my major. I then did something else and later went back t school. I wanted courses that could get me a job if I had to drop out again. I saw people with a biology degree that could not find a job. I got information.

My daughter is now 15, and soon...she will be coming to that point in her life...to go, or not to go to college. Your argument is spot on. I am a retired veteran finishing my degree and starting my own business at the same time. I also work in the department creating and teaching a field of study that is directly related to my business. As part of the development, I have convinced the "higher ups" that a course in Entrepreneurship is a must have for a person to succeed in this field upon graduating. I have had the privilege of speaking with a Senator who visited my "class" and we spoke of student success in this field. Again....a course in Entrepreneurship will help solidify a person in making something of their degree....instead of accepting a "safe" mediocre job, making someone else rich. Instead of accepting a job outside of their degree field due to the job market being flooded with too many graduates applying to that position. "Give a man a fish...." Entrepreneurship will teach a man (or woman) "to fish".

I retired from US Air Force after 25 years. This video is fantastic. My daughter received a 4 year ROTC scholarship from FSU. She dropped out after first year. Why? She lacked the ability to organize her thoughts and put pen to paper. She now works for a union that does movie and TV sets. She loves it!!!! College was not her thing.

I completely agree with this Patrick. Thanks for this video and for all the others you make. I wish I watched this before I went and got a degree. What a waste of time and money. Work ethic is the most important thing for success for sure. I have a successful business of my own now that I am very grateful for but It has nothing to do with a degree and everything to do with discipline and work ethic. Watching a video from the late great Jim Rohn changed the way I looked at life. Jim Rohn youtube videos were way more valuable to me then a four year college degree. I realized everything that he is saying back then in the 1990's when I was in high-school I avoided all of the collage crap and became a full time custodian in a public school on longisland New York. I have no debt and I'm making awesome money.

Learnt more in my first week of attempting to go out into the industry I was studying than 18 months of university. Things they never taught me how to do that are vital capabilities to survive let alone succeed in that industry.
I learnt more in the sales jobs I had for 6 years as well.
this video made me take a more mature vision of my current situation, I really appreciated it. In Chile we are taught to go to college 'cause our parents couldn't afford it. In the 60~80's you would have amazing job opportunities with really good incomes, but not anymore. Nowadays it's all about privates schools which offer the same careers and you don't even need good grades ,it's obiously more expensive but so is the public one ( my career costs around 4k per year, and here the minimun wage is only $500 USD) I would love my parents could change their minds, 'cause I think if you are happy with what you are doing, and you can survive with that income, nothing else should matters.

Like you said so well, college is still needed for careers like mine-anesthesia...but I do think recruiters can sign up students and pay them stipends during school or hospitals can reimburse anesthetists for contracting with them for a period of time- Neither of my parents graduated HIGH SCHOOL and I paid for my own school and worked whenever I could. Make the kid pay and they will do better and finish school in time because it’s THEIR MONEY.

Pat, I'm pumped, left school recently, was studying design at a community college in KC. Stayed in touch with an instructor and he sent a job to me. Took me 10 hrs and I only made $50 - however, I was more excited about getting paid to learn vs the opposite at school. The commute to school alone came to 30hrs a semester. The youtube videos I took advantage of there covered more in those hrs. than a whole semester at school. Thanks for being a virtual mentor.

totally agree. I did a whole documentary about alternative education, and self directed learning. I got involved in alternative education, and began teaching blogging and community building. I studied neuromarketing and advertising as well as film on my own. I've had so many adventures and became a digital nomad. Learning every day and I'm teaching others to do the same :)

i kinda disagree on the engineering part i am studying mechanical engineering for 3 years now and it really disappoints me that iam not learning anything in university even in my classes almost all students are either sleeping or playing on their phones even one of my friends told me that you only apply 15% at the most of what you learned in collage the exam system is also unfair like you can not study at all and u still get a good grade if you manged to cheat it is not about learning it is about getting the good grades which is either memorizing or cheating
Where are you from? Studying engineering in Germany is a 40-60h job to get the Bachelor Degree, it`s really tough, getting the Master Degree only 10-20h a week, because you specialise in things you already know.

essennagerry nah, 10-15% is right, especially in engineering. for example: you have to do the courses math 1-3, but for 99% of all the work you do in real life, normal integrals are enough, which you learn in math 1 heck what you even learn in school. you dont need integrals in multiple dimensions from math 2 and 3. but you might need it for a phd. that is what people dont seem to understand. you go to university to learn academic work, you dont learn practical things. that is not the point. i dont know when people started to think that academic work = practical work.

I watched your video Stay in School or Drop Out video and I have to let you know how much I appreciate this video because it has been a gripe of mine for a long time and these are things I wish I knew earlier. I dropped out of college after nearly 2 years because I still wasn't sure on my degree path so I found myself taking multiple paths simultaneously anticipating a decision. Then I found myself in the security field. I found something I enjoy, that I'm good at, something I enjoy getting up every day and doing. I wish I hadn't accumulated the debt in college and instead spent that same time and energy doing what I enjoy. I went from working as an unarmed guard at some apartment to a team leader on a diplomat protection detail to now running a company of about 50 professionals in security and law enforcement where we specialize in criminal intervention and surveillance. I am now a certified instructor for my state where I teach things I've done over the years such as investigations, law enforcement firearms, defensive tactics, etc. Its only been about 4 years since I started in that run down apartment but it seems like I've been doing it all my life because of the fact that I spent so much time and energy and money on becoming better at what I do. I trained constantly while starving for food at times but it was worth it. I'm far from done. I have major investors in the area approaching me to start a business because they see how passionate and knowledgeable I am and that I have so many ideas to take it to the next level. This isn't a success story because I'm at the very beginning of what I feel will be success in my career and its about to take off. I couldn't imagine just a few years ago being in the situation I'm in now. All that time and money spent on college could've gone to something so much better and useful.
It was peer pressure mostly. Having an Iranian father, you could imagine what I was pressured to do.
I still think about my first security course I took while still in college. That same teacher has been begging me to come teach for him. Refused of course but extremely humbled.
Some really great points were made in this video. I couldn't agree more with it. I fit the description of reasons not to go to college. I wasted 3+ years on college and learned nothing from it. because I was doing the wrong thing. I had no business being there. If you don't plan on being a doctor or something related, college is Incredibly stupid. If you're an entrepreneur at
heart (as much as that word is overused) then college will only slow you down.
And one more thing.... If what you're studying or are considering studying can be learned much faster without college, at your pace, then you'd only waste your time attending.
I have been listening to the guy for years and he makes sense from A to Z. Please run for a governors office and make one state great so all other states can look and learn and mimic it.
I am tired seeing failed states and cities all around.

I have mixed feelings about this. When I first came to University, I hated it. I thought it was useless, and coming into college I thought it wouldn’t teach me what I needed to know on how to run a business (I’m a business major). Although I almost dropped out I decided to stay because I had a full tuition scholarship and even had my rent paid for. But as I began networking I met people who were getting great jobs after college and it open my eyes to the opportunities that are available. I have seen people get six figure salaries right out of college. And for being 21 or 22 that is amazing. You always here the bad stories from people going to college but never the good ones. If you network and put in the work you can get amazing jobs.
I am 21 and I just graduated from college two weeks ago and will be starting my new full-time job as a Project Manager in June making $78k my first year. That is in the state of North Carolina which is very good for a new grad! There are so many good roles out there that people are not aware of and if you the right people I think it’s a great option.
P.S. I am a first generation Latino college grad!

Loved this. I tried college 3 times, but was taking classed my dad forced me to take. I never had a chance in high school to take auto, home building, I had enough I went into the army jan 1982. Half of my platoon was kicked out . The army could be picky. Half of my platoon had 4 year college degrees, but could not find a job. Dave Ramsey has some courses that are in some high schools, about credit, retirement , insurance ect. Also Robert Kiyosaki has great ideas also. He talks about school and how he struggled with it. School at Weber State in Ogden Utah in 1981 was 189.00 a quarter. Now it is close to 3500.00 a Semester. Books in college are such a crok. Some are 300-450 each. Thanks for all your ideas and putting these videos together.
