The guy in mint green shirt is so fun to watch. Him describing the Filipino food and fruits is so entertaining.
When you're a Filipino and you're so used to eating bananas, pinya, rambutan, mangga, langka, you don't really give it so much appreciation anymore. Hearing these foreigners speaking so passionately and enthusiastically about the foods and fruits here in the Philippines is really so humbling.

My friend is Filipino on her mom's side and I am with her family now in the Philippines. I knew to expect rice for every meal but my friend's boyfriend did not and he turned it down most of the time and he couldn't figure out why people reacted strangely. Then my friend's Filipino cousin said, "Here if you don't eat rice you will die." Meaning, it's a staple food and important for survival and stuff. I understood that. But we took them out to eat at an Americanized restaurant that served ribs and mashed potatoes and corn on the cob and things like that and I thought it was funny that they still ordered rice with their meal even though they didn't have to. And they thought it was strange when we told them Americans don't usually eat that much rice. And my friend's cousin also had a hard time wrapping her head around the fact that there is absolutely no rice at our McDonald's. My friend's mom has been living in the U.S. for almost 30 years now and has adjusted well and was telling them what Americans usually eat for breakfast. She has adjusted to not eating rice every day and only makes a small batch of rice every few days and cooks and eats a lot of American food now. She decided to make an American meal for them to try. She made fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, and fried green tomatoes. They still made a batch of rice to go with it. Lol.

There are so many foods back in the Philippines. Each culture (82 dialects?) has their own ways of cooking foods. Good example that I did not hear (here) are snacks like tupig, calamay, tinubong. This are sweet foods made of different kind of rice (flour of sticky kind of rice) cooked inside a bamboo, wrap with banana leaves, or coconut/palm leaves. These are good snacks and they only make it during Christmas season.

Filipinos eat rice every meal because we often have a tedious work. Rice gives energy because it is the primary source of carbohydrates, so we have to work full time, and along with that, is a full stomach. you must probably know that. Thanks

    Nice collection!
    (1) He he, when Sumner said "mongoose", I said, "What, we have that HERE???" Turned out he meant munggo (singular verb only in Filipino). LOL!!!
    (2) Mang Inasal should definitely thank missionaries for spreading the word (about them!) for free, he he...
    (3) Ulam = it's a viand that we usually eat together with rice.
    (4) Don't worry, guys. Eating balut is an acquired taste. I don't really eat it. Well, I do sometimes, but I take the chick out of it (I try not to look, ha ha!). I've only tried the chick once in my whole life, when I was a kid and my father tried to teach me. One bite and I spewed it out in disgust, HA HA HAAA!!! So you see, not all Pinoys like it. Even the viand dinuguan, which is pork cooked in pig's blood (that one I eat). If it's all red and such, I probably wouldn't. It's black -- yes, weird, but it takes your mind off the blood.
    (5) We do know what peaches are, but we don't -- CAN'T -- grow them. We know them from canned fruits, ha ha. To add info on what we can't grow here: www.pepper.ph/fruits-veggies-cant-grow-philippines/
    (6) In the Philippines. McDo tries to keep up with Jollibee so they offer rice meals, too. (I wonder if they do that as well in other Asian countries that eat rice, though...?). Even with commercials. When Jollibee began creating sentimental, family-centric commercials in the late '80s or early '90s, the resto's popularity skyrocketed. McDo followed suit years after, changing their marketing strategy.
These two do compete a lot that they copy off each other's menus. One creates something that becomes a hit somewhat, the other creates a similar product.
    (6) While it would be nice to claim it, durian isn't really just unique here. Some other Asian countries have that, too.
    (7) Starting at 42:05,... Not sure why he said vegetables were rare (unless it was where he stayed at). We have lots of vegetables. We have lots of tomatoes and potatoes, though they both cost much these days. We do tend to just buy tomato ketchup or paste when we cook. Pinoys usually love potatoes. He also said he didn't encounter beans. A lot of our vegetables are legumes, in fact, when I was young and not fond of veggies yet, the ones I liked to eat were legumes. Anyway, maybe he was referring to specific kinds of beans, I dunno. He called sari-sari stores as tiangges, but I can see why since there is a similarity.
    (8) Majority of Pinoys frown at eating dogs. Not just frown, abhorr the idea!!!...Just had to get this out there.

We Filipinos eat a lot of rice because aside from it is abundant in the Philippines, it is also very filling. It is important for Filipinos to eat rice specially to the poor people in the Philippines because we don't know when the next meal will be served. So we need to be full for a longer time to keep us going.
