I still think of her housekeeping book and the advice to start cleaning in a different room each week or “…eventually you’ll just have to saw that back bedroom off the house.” And to do the first 5 minutes of several chores then you’ll be motivated to finish them all. And Sweep Steak. Loved her books. Going to re-read them this winter.
Oh wow, I was so excited to see this video. This was my mom’s cooking Bible! If she misplaced the cookbook, she would make everyone help look for it. I have her copy and she’s worn the binding out. It’s falling apart and she’s written notes on recipes. I’m so glad to have it. My parents got married in 1963. I will share this video with her. I appreciate your rant. People need to hear that having certain established practices in behavior are important. Etiquette is important. I still set a proper table anytime I have a guest. I still remember in my 20s when I was going to make dinner for the interior designers I was working for my mom ask what I plan to use for silverware and when I mention my mismatch stainless steel she offered to loan me some of my grandmother’s silver to use. She gave me a very interesting look and said you can’t have guest over and serve them with mismatched silver! And I think she’s right!
Hi John - I'm glad that you kept your mom's copy! This book would have still been pretty popular when your parents got married. Your mom knew the importance of setting a nice table for company! Thanks for sharing that story!
I loved to cook, but this was one of my favorites. We all had those busy days when we felt a bit under the weather. On those days this book was a lifesaver for great easy ideas. I still have my original hardback copy from 1960. It never had a dust jacket as far as I know. I’m disabled and 78 now. It still comes in handy when I want to have some close friends over for a meal. I can fix something tasty but easy. I’d never part with this book.
I came across the I Hate to Cook Book about 15 years ago in a thrift store. I bought it because I don't enjoy cooking and thought perhaps it would help me. It did!! The humor in this wonderful book helped me accomplish more in the kitchen. I still don't live up to my mom or grandmother, but Peg Bracken is my guardian angel. Thanks for this video!!
I agree with your rant about phones - I hate going out to a restaurant and watching the table engrossed with their phones and not talking to each other. Loved Erma Bombeck. Agree about etiquette - nice to have some order. So many today just do not cook. Will definitely check out Peg Bracken's books. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Christine - like you, I often see families at a restaurant and every one of them is just looking into their phones. No one says a word. If you run across a Peg Bracken book pick it up! Thanks!
I'm so happy to listen to every tangent you go on! Please don't apologize. I love all your channels and inevitably end up thinking of my grandmother who was all about etiquette and had a rose bud she grew herself on every table she set.
Hi Kevin, This was a great video. I have this book and really enjoy her writing style. It makes for a fun relaxing read. I will be reading it again soon. Thanks for presenting it.
This sounds like my kind of cookbook. It's depressing to be out & see people buried in their smartphone screens, seemingly oblivious to the real world around them. About two months ago, I bought a large pile of LIfe Magazines (1961-1972) for twenty bucks at an estate sale. I picked a random one out of the pile & thumbed through it & marveled at how engaging it was. In one article, there were three or four words & had to look up in the dictionary. The ads were like dessert. Have a great day.
Hi junqeboi - what fun you must have had with that pile of old Life magazines! The ads were wonderful - such great artwork and photography. The articles were well written and not dumbed down. This is how we learned words and expanded our vocabularies - by looking up words we weren't familiar with. Enjoy those wonderful old magazines!
The perfect complement to this book is "Real Men Don't Eat Quiche" by Bruce Feirstein published in 1982. When my buddy got divorced, he was lost in the kitchen and no meal delivery services back then, I gave him this book. It got him off the mac & cheese and ramen noodles diet.
Kevin, your rant is my rant. My cell phone sits in a bowl in my kitchen, waiting to be taken with me in the car for emergencies. Occasionally it gets used because my landline is down and I have to report it. Peg Bracken sounds like a hoot. I always liked reading Erma Bombeck's column in the paper and seeing her on the Tonight Show. We could all use more humor in our lives these days. Your Cavalcade videos have lots of humor and I appreciate that.
Hi Jonathan - one of the Detroit newpapers used to carry Erma Bombeck's column and we'd all read it and get a good laugh! Humor is important. You'd enjoy the Peg Bracken books. Thanks!
I remember Peg Bracken (and Erma Bombeck, for that matter!)-she was a hoot! I vaguely recall that she did some TV commercials for some food company...I want to say Birdseye?
Hi kvcooks - I don't recall the Peg Bracken commercials, but it would make sense that a company - especially one that made easy to prepare foods - would have her as the spokesperson! Thanks!
@@kvcooks814 hi KV cooks. You are correct it was Birdseye. I read your comment and typed in “Peg Bracken commercials” into TH-cam search. About the fourth one down was the actual commercial. She’s a hoot!
Haha! My mom had this cookbook. She was a teacher and worked when all the neighbors were stay at home moms. Cooking was not her favorite. She was too busy. However, my dad learned to cook from his mom and grandmother. He always helped with the recipes, and did spend some time cooking too. As a latch key kid that babysat my sister and brother it was my job to get diner started so we would be able to eat at a reasonable hour. I made dinner alot growing up! Then I have cooked for 50 years. Sometimes you just are not feeling it! I get inspired by reading my cookbooks. I hope that you have a good weekend. I love your videos!!
Hi Terry Sue! Thanks for sharing your story! I remember friends who had working moms and there was just no time to prepare a large meal from scratch every day. Sounds like you got your kitchen experience early in life. And I know how you feel - sometimes I just say "let's go out to eat" because I'm just not in the mood. Thanks!
Admittedly, I had that first "The I Hate To Cook Book" book. (See how I did that? ha) I love to cook, but don't like very involved, multistep recipes. Cooking from scratch is a lot of creative fun. Thanks for the memories, Kevin. All my best to you and the gang!
Hi Valli! Seems like this little cookbook really was popular! I'm with you - I don't like overly complicated recipes. We can cook great food without all the fuss. Hope all is well with you!!
Kevin, I do remember those cookbooks, but knew nothing about the author. She introduced those books into a market ready for a simpler way of life. Love the humor & straight forward approach.
Hi, Kevin! Ranting is okay by me. Do as much of it as you like. Most people don't read at all. It doesn't seem to be fashionable to read so I feel like I'm in the minority most of the time. I'd rather read then eat, which is saying a lot!! I remember my mother reading Erma Bombeck books, but she loved to cook, so that might be why I didn't grow up with the Peg Bracken books. Thanks for the video. I hope everyone who watches is encouraged to read something today!
Oh Kevin, it was about doing it all....as it is and has always been. Julia was a different person x Love these special books Kevin and team. Thankyou so much xxx

A great review. Thanks for the video. Your cookbook collection is really growing. Do you collect other books as well, like old classic literature? I love books and I collect mostly very old books both classics and cookbooks. I tried reading books on a tablet and a Kindle but they were not as enjoyable as actually holding a real printed book. Not to mention that books are much better for your eyes.
Hi JWimpy - I do have some other books but most of my collection is cookbooks. I agree - holding an actual paper book is much easier to read than a screen. Thanks!
I wish I didn't have to rely so much on my smartphone, but I would have never found "The Cavalcade of Food". Maybe someone would have gave you a 30 minute spot once a week on some random UHF station, and would have been seen by only a handful of people.
Hi Lauren! Yes, phones are allowed in class because every person has one. However the phones are not to be seen or heard while class is in session. Period.
Well, I'm not old and you're right. Smartphones are dumb phones. And also, guess what! Books are making a comeback. I just joined a book club myself. Real paper. Real words. Real people to talk about it with. And, I have Peg Bracken's book.

In my area, holding doors and carrying packages for seniors is making a comeback!
And who was tasked with teaching today's youth these important life lessons? 🤔
Hi Loretta! Some schools called it etiquette and some called them manners. We learned these things at home and they were reinforced in school. Thanks!
