@1990turboDSM the "record" still gets degraded after the first cut though lol. It doesn't matter what you can sharpen it to off the bat, it's how well it STAYS sharpened while you do you work. And that's a quality of the steel on not technically the person sharpening it....
The 940 is thicker behind the edge than both the Delica and Elementum and an overall thicker edge geometry. I have all three in my collection and the Delica and Elementum cut far better with less effort than the 940, especially through materials like cardboard. This wire test is only measuring the acute portion of the edge but overall blade grind thickness and edge geometry is more important for actually separating matter.
Even still, I do not believe for a moment that the Benchmade was in ANY way more sharp than the Spyderco. Benchmade factory edges are the second worst I’ve seen right in front of Case.
@@Jake-bt3fc that's not exactly true depending on what you want to cut. For splitting wood, geometry is more important, but for soft things the actual edge is quite essential of course. That being said, a good knife needs both geometry and edge
@@jeanladoire4141 There is a big difference between cutting wood and splitting wood. Try to do a cross cut with a blunt maul. It would take all day long, lol. Doesn't matter if the blade has a belly, a straight edge, or a recurve, if it's not sharp it's literally worthless as a cutting tool.
@@Jake-bt3fc except that's not totally exact, some edges are better off blunt, like cleavers. That's pretty surprising, but i now work in a butchery, you can run your finger across the cleavers, and they chop carcasses fine. Most of the really low scores are from people using the sharpness tester wrong lmao, if you just press hard enough fast enough it’ll break way before you can add enough pressure with the blade to actually cut the wire instead of breaking it
i have a civivi knife and honestly the craftsmanship put into it, the effortless way it opens with just the slightest flick, the overall weight of the blade. it’s a quality piece and so far i would have to recommend the brand.
I want to try this with my knives. They are always shaving sharp, but once you get to 'shaving sharp' it's really hard to decide how much sharper it is without science.
I own an Osborn and I gotta say it's the best EDC knife on the market, in my opinion of course. Everyone has their favorite and to each their own but man I tell you. I've been carrying this knife for 3 years using it daily for opening boxes, cutting them up. Opening packages for the kiddo and cutting clothes tags for the missus. Using it for mechanics work as well and it only recently started getting dull after 3 years of abuse. I think its subjective, I've used mine hard over 3 years and it's honestly incredible how amazing it's been. Other people havent had the best experiences. Personally I'm definitely getting another 940 Osborn because I'm completely sold.
Probably a regular whetstone tbh. Pull thrus are no good, and ones where you set the angle don't work well with all sizes (at least mine doesn't, I have the lansky). Not sure about electric and other sharpeners. Whet stones can be hard to learn tho.
Don't listen to the Andrew guy. Just buy some kind of a jig and it'll keep a perfect angle which no human ever will. People spend years trying to master holding a perfect angle when it's plainly obvious that a jig like my lansky is just the way to go. Not worth your the time or the learning curve. Just spend a little more money and do a tenth the work to get a sharper knife.
I have carried and abused Spyderco’s for many years, my dad has carried them for 20 years before me They will cut anything and sharpen up just fine, sharpening is 5 bucks for 3 knives at once you just mail em to the colorado factory and they do one hell of a job, you could cut concrete with it My dad has broken one tip in 20 years
My Spiderco walked away with the victory because it's the best Knifes that I have ever owned I can't complain about how well it made and how well it handles and how sharp the blade as held up for 35 years. GOD-BLESS.
I have a black multitool, and the knife is my favorite thing with the entire tool. It has a smooth front end, and a sharp pointed end, and it serrated teeth in the back of the knife end. It is amazing for opening packages in my opinion, and it comes its own carrying case.
That’s impressive for M4, I make the steel for most of these knife companies so I always go with S30V, the high chrome and vanadium makes the edge retention great, just a pain in the ass to sharpen
So it’s kind of funny but I have discovered on most new knives that if you take it out of the package and do a little stropping it goes a long way. I have a nice dual sided leather strop with 1 micron gunny juice on it and it does wonders for a new blade. I’m not trying to be mean but most of the new knives I get the edge is still carrying a pretty substantial burr. This is just the result of the manufacturer using a belt based power grinder to set the edge. You can see a bit of convexity under the microscope. I have taken new Benchmades and Spydercos and spent just 5-10 minutes stropping them and the end result is sharpness under 100 on the Bess scale. I invested in a Bess scale about a year ago when I started getting so many request to sharpen knives that it actually became a task that I had to dedicate time to multiple days a week!! I have a Precision Adjust Professional, TSPROF, and my most recent acquisition was the Wicked Edge Gen4 Pro.
I can tell you that the cvivi(sp) elementum knife holds its edge really well. I skinned a whole hog with mine and it still cut paper with ease, great EDC pocket knife
I had a smaller Spyerderco knife, and I really liked the thing too. It was super useful. Then I randomly lost it one day at work and haven't seen it. I don't remember loaing it out or leaving it anywhere, just vanished on me. Shame to being it was a gift from my brother
Kershaw and zt knives are the best I worked in the warehouse with my mom for a while after I turned 15 last year the quality on them is superb they’ll last you a life time if you take care of them properly and they keep their edge amazingly
That Spyderco has CPM-M4 as well. If it didn't you got the wrong one. I just got the mint FRN with titanium carbonitride coated M4 blade. It looks better than the non-coated Delica.
That’s funny because my BHQ Exclusive M4 Osborne had a TERRIBLE edge. It couldn’t cut paper, but the worst was how uneven the grinds were. The bevel on one side was literally twice as wide (2mm) as the other at the tip and the other was wider at the heel. I had to remove a lot of metal to fix it. Way more than I wanted to on a brand new knife.
Imo, edge geometry, edge retention, and intended use are more important. Coarse edge all day for a heavy use knife. Coarse edge will generally last longer. Pro tip from William Collins.
