    Nice video! I recently returned from 9 days in Japan and loved it. Looking back, I wish I didn't worry so much prior to the trip. Although the train system is extremely extensive and can be confusing, I found Japan to be a fairly easy country to travel through because there is good (English) signage everywhere. We also found most people we interacted with could speak enough English to help us, plus they were friendly and willing to help. In fact, there was never even a situation where we had to speak any Japanese. The stations themselves are amazing and have everything like bakeries, grocery stores, etc. I am already looking forward to another future trip, though hopefully longer this next time

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was exactly the same! Before you go, you don't know what to expect so it can be nerve-wracking. We're so lucky as english speakers that there are so many english signs! Now you're addicted to going to Japan too :-)

      - Keisei Skyliner (quickest, get a pass for foreigners before you go to Japan: www.keisei.co.jp/keisei/tetudou/skyliner/e-ticket/en/ )
      - Narita Express (Buy at the airport, if you take it to Shinjuku you'll only have to take one subway line to Roppongi, to avoid changing trains with your suitcases too much) www.jreast.co.jp/e/nex/
      - There are cheaper options too, which take longer or involve more changes: www.japan-guide.com/e/e2027.html

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Lots of guides say you need to take the bus in Kyoto. Personally I didn't want to (because I worry about being able to tell when to get off!). There's a small metro with 2 lines, and there are JR lines too - you can use your Suica. Some of it is walkable (we stayed near the main station & walked from there to Southern Higashiyama & Gion, which is one of the main areas for old streets & things to see). For me, the highlights were Fushimi Inari and the day trip to Miyajima - and Kinkakuji was stunning, even though I wasn't that bothered about seeing it beforehand!

      The looped nature of the city means there's no real "central" hub. There are 6 main hubs on the Yamanote Loop Line each with positives and negatives. And a few other decent places not on JR such as Kanda and Asakusa.
      Although Shinjuku is perhaps the biggest hub, with significant night life, I will add a couple caveats.
      1) It's trial by fire. You're situating yourself on one of the most difficult stations. And because so many different train companies are there, and most are above ground, the stations are often in your way as one company won't let you walk across their stuff to get to another company. So even if you're "close" to a lot of different stations and lines, because the station complex is so large and crowded it can take longer to actually get on a train than other places.
      2) The largest red light district is there. And while fairly safe and relatively tame, some of the bigger hotels are just straight up in the red light district and may be an uncomfortable, if probably safe, walk later at night. Just worth knowing when you choose your lodging.
      Overall, you'll need to be taking a train most days so being close to a (useful) station is most important. As for what's important to have around your home station, that depends on what you're looking for. If you want to stay out past 12;30 AM or so drinking then you need to be on one of a few certain hubs where enough people are planing to stay out until the trains start again in the morning.

    It's actually cheaper to get the 3 day pass for the Metro/Subway if you're going to do a lot of running around the city in a 3 days period. Ends up being a big discount than paying full price and the Metro and Subway pretty much all over Tokyo with only having to jump on either a JR or one of the other private lines on occasion. Getting the SUICA card is great for not having to stop and get a ticket every time, but in the end, you end up paying full price. The Tokyo Subway 72 Hour Ticket really is a money saver specially when planing to visit several locations in a 3 day period (I plan accordingly). Easily picked up in the Tourist Information area at Haneda International Terminal and can renew it in several locations throughout Tokyo if need be.

    Your videos always help me so much! I was going to buy JR for 21 days since my trip is of 22 days, but I went to HYPERDIA to do the math and it really wouldn’t be good for me. It’s U$589 and the most expensive shinkansen I’ll take is about U$100 and the others are around U$50, so I would actually be expending more if I hadn’t stopped to do the math :O!
    Do you know if icoca card (from Osaka) works in Tokyo, and if I can recharge it there? Or only pasmo and suica?
    Thanks so much for your incredible channel! :3

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much - that's great to hear you'll save some (a lot of!) money! The 21 day pass is very pricey. For my next trip I'm getting a 7 day pass which is shorter than the trip but I'll only need it for the middle section. Yes, the IC cards work in different areas, so you can use your Icoca just the same as a Suica, in Tokyo and any other areas you go to. :-)

    Such a helpful video, loving your channel! I'm going to Tokyo later this year, and I'm wondering if I'm best off having a small shoulder bag to carry my phone, charger, cash etc. or am I better off with a backpack so I can put any purchases in there? 😊

      @cakeswithfaces  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much, so glad you're finding my videos helpful! I usually take my usual small shoulder bag as it's good not having to carry too much around. However this time I wore a backpack most of the time and it was convenient being able to put a drink and hoodie, etc in there. So they're both good - I usually take both just in case, and switch to my backpack if we're going on a day trip out of the city - of maybe if you're planning on buying a lot that day! Enjoy your Japlanning! :-D

      I actually haven't! My tips are:
      - If you're allowed two suitcases, pack a medium-sized one inside a larger one, then your stuff inside that, so you have an extra case if you want to buy lots of things. Or take an empty holdall or sports bag.
      - Pack your toiletries in bags in case they leak.
      - Wear your bulkiest clothes and shoes on the plane (as long as they're comfortable)!
      - Take some spare plastic bags - they're always useful - especially for dirty washing, etc.
      Hope that helps! :-)

      It seems that if you want to take your bike on trains, you have to either fold it or dismantle it in some way, and it has to be in a bag, box or be covered: hokkaidowilds.org/traveling-with-a-tern-folding-bike-on-the-train-in-japan
      Also be aware that getting to the platform and transferring lines often involves walking long distances through tunnels, and it can be very crowded/hectic in some places.

    Thank you SO much for your videos! We're (hopefully) be going in September to Japan and your videos are SO helpful! We have a huge question, hope you can help us.. we will have a JR Pass and we will activate it as soon as we arrive.
    We planned to buy the 72 hours day ticket, however if we can use the JR Yamanote Line, then the trains we will need to take outside of those lines wouldn't be many, would there? So maybe a Suica Card would be better? I also saw your other video where you spend around 3,000 Yen in trains in 3 days, that is why I'm not so sure. What would you recommend? Thank you!

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much, so glad you've been enjoying my videos! :-) With your JR Pass you'll be able to go on the Yamanote Line and the Chuo and Sobu lines in Tokyo. The Chuo and Sobu lines are easily missed on the map - they're thin lines that run across the middle, so they're really useful, and they're a much faster way to get across the city than the metro.
      Really it depends on your plans and where you're staying, but you can get to to a lot of the main places on these lines. You'll probably do a few metro trips as well. In my other video I didn't have a JR Pass so I was paying for JR lines as well.
      If you get a Suica, you'll be able to use it in other areas of Japan too - there'll probably be some other local trains you'll need that aren't JR. Personally I think a Suica is easier and more flexible than working out which metro pass is best - and if you do end up spending more than the 72 hour ticket, it won't be a huge amount more. Hope that helps!

    If I start my trip in Osaka, from there to Kyoto, and then to Tokyo (possibly with a day trip to Mt. Fuji from Tokyo, pending on the weather) - is it better to get any of the JR Rail passes, or just buy specific tickets? thanks!

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If none of them are return trips, the individual tickets would work out about £50 less than the rail pass (but do check that yourself - you can see tickets prices on Hyperdia and Japan-Guide.com). You can get a Hakone free pass for the Mount Fuji trip. So it depends if your other trips on JR lines will add up to more than £50.
      You can easily travel between Osaka and Kyoto in half an hour (15 mins on the bullet train) as a day trip so you don't have to change hotels and stay in both - unless you want to :-)

      If you'll be returning to Tokyo to fly home, the JR Pass will definitely be worth it (it costs about the same as a return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka). Still unsure if we should get the suica or just Jr.
    We are going for 3 weeks. Tokyo, mt fuji, karuizawa, kyoto, osaka,hakone - back to tokyo.
    How much roughly is each fare?
    Like say if we were going from shibuya-disneyland or
    Tokyo-Mt Fuji.
    Just so unsure if we should get both?! And only use the suica for inner city trains and then Jr everywhere else?!
    How much is a single fare roughly tokyo-kyoto using the suica without purchasing the 7/14/21 day Jr pass. (One way)
    Any answers will be appreciated!!! 💗💗💗

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Nicki, so glad you like my videos! I'd get both - JR Pass and a Suica card. The JR Pass costs roughly the same as a return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto, so you'll be saving money as it'll include your other JR trains and shinkansen as well. Shinkansen tickets tend to be expensive, which is what makes the pass good value. And you can use the Suica for everything else (Tokyo metro, non-JR trains in Osaka/Kyoto, etc).
      You can check fares on www.hyperdia.com/
      If you plan carefully you might be able to get the 14 day JR Pass to save money. You won't use the pass much while you're in Tokyo, so if you're in Tokyo for the start and end of your trip, you only need the pass while you're travelling around the rest of Japan.
      Take a look at the JR Tokyo Wide Pass: www.jreast.co.jp/e/tokyowidepass/
      It covers Tokyo to Hakone and Karuizawa. Depending on your plans, you might also be able to save money by getting that for 3 days while you visit those places, then getting a shorter JR Pass (7 or 14 days) for your trip to Kyoto & Osaka.
      Hope that helps! :-)

      Suica cards are for trains within Tokyo, and the JR Pass is for travelling long distance around Japan. There's more about both in my Getting Around Tokyo video: th-cam.com/video/rvqitrtmziY/w-d-xo.html

    Mystay Haneda (hotel pickup)
    D2 & D3
    Euno,Akasuka,Akihabara,Shibuya,Shinjuku & (Disneyland-tentative)
    D4
    Tokyo - Odawara - Hakone (Hakone 2 Days Pass)
    D5
    Hakone - Odawara - Osaka (Shinkanzen)
    D6 & D7
    Osaka (Osaka Amazing Pass)
    D8

      If you were doing a return trip between Tokyo and Osaka, a JR Pass would definitely be worth it. However, as you're just going one way, there's a chance it'd be cheaper to buy a single shinkansen ticket. You can price it up on www.hyperdia.com and work out which would be cheaper. The JR Pass would give you free travel on JR railways lines so would cover many of your other trips too (it doesn't include the Tokyo metro or non-JR lines).
      As you're travelling around Tokyo a lot on days 2 and 3, the 48 hour pass would probably be worth it. Just don't put too much money on your Suica card because you might not use that much for the rest of the time. You can get individual train tickets instead, but a Suica is easier.

    • @excape79
      @excape79 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. I made some change on our itinerary where we cancelling Hakone. So we will be at staying 3 night each at Tokyo & Osaka. I will be getting Suica card, 48 hours Tokyo metro pass & Shinkansen one way ticket to Osaka. At Osaka we will be using OAP & Suica. I still have mixed feeling about how much credit should i put for Suica? Understand that Suica will have 1500Y when we purchase, do you think another 3000Y will do to cover the total train cost?

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might not be using it that much - so I'd just use the credit that's on it to start with and see how it goes - you can top it up at any time. Remember you'll need cash to top it up. If it runs out and you're almost done, just buy the cheapest single ticket from the machine, then top it up at the Fare Adjustment machine when you get to the destination. That way you won't lose any money on your Suica.

    Hey, I'm going to Japan for 10 days. 6 days in Tokyo, 2 days in Kyoto and 2 days in Osaka. Would you recommend the JR pass or Suica card?

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you'll be doing a return trip between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka, a JR Pass will definitely save you money (the JR Pass costs the same as the return trip. You'll only really need the JR Pass when you leave Tokyo. If it's just a one-way trip, it might be cheaper to get individual shinkansen tickets, depending on how many other JR trains you'll be using in your itinerary. I'd recommend getting a Suica card anyway in both cases, to use for the metro and non-JR trains.

    • @justderay
      @justderay 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cakeswithfaces Thanks for the response. So in order; 4 days in Tokyo, 2 days in Kyoto then 2 days in Osaka (from Kyoto) and then finally 2 days back in Tokyo. Is the suica card valid for travelling to Kyoto and Osaka?

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the JR Pass will be worth it for your trip; get the 7 day pass & activate it the day you’re leaving Tokyo. Use the JR Pass for the shinkansen to/from Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka, and any JR lines you go on. Use the Suica for everything else, it’s valid everywhere in Japan. Hope that helps!

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ollieflp That's an ideal location for Tokyo Disney, but it's a little away from the rest of the city so I wouldn't really recommend it if you want to be near Tokyo Station. To get into the city you'd need to take the Disney monorail (which you have to pay for), then another train line for 15-20 minutes.
      The area around Ginza / Shimbashi / Shiodome is close to Tokyo Station and has lots of hotels. It's not really quiet but it's definitely quieter than the really busy central areas like Shibuya. There are lots of places to eat for the evening. Ginza is a shopping district with lots of designer shops, and not so much on the nightlife side so it's quieter in the evenings, and if you're close to Ginza station, Tokyo Station's only one stop away on the metro.
      Definitely pick somewhere on the east side of the city as it can take a while to get across it on the train. I always like to pick somewhere close to a station - and check which subway lines the station's on, for access to Tokyo Station as it can take time to change lines.
      Odaiba is a lot more chilled and spacious than central Tokyo. I don't usually recommend staying there as it takes a little longer to get to the rest of the city (and Tokyo Station), and the train there is slightly pricier than the other lines, so the fares could add up for a family.
      Hope that helps!
