Let's Make a Sketchbook! Easy, Beginner Coptic Stitch Tutorial

  • This project makes perfect use of 2 sheets of 22"x30" watercolor paper but you can use any paper you want and make it any size you like using this tutorial. Using 2 large sheets of quality watercolor paper will give you a sketchbook that's better than anyone you can buy and you can even use a mix of papers if you like. You can probably scrounge up tools from your home to make this project but I have a supply list below if you need anything. If you are new a basic bookbinding kit will be the most economical. Let's get started!
Supplies (affiliate links to Blick and Amazon provided)
    Paper (22"x30" 100% cotton 140# is my choice) shrsl.com/4mi9u
Bookboard or Mat board: amzn.to/3LGSUxE (you can glue together a couple of cereal boxes instead of buying this, just be sure to cover them with an acid-free paper and glue to buffer them.
This tool kit contains the tools and thread you need: amzn.to/4d4kUHJ
OR you can buy things individually
    Waxed thread: amzn.to/4c4oYGk
    Bone Folder: amzn.to/3ykRjuq
    Embroidery Needles: amzn.to/3WndFDr
    Awl (pokey tool) amzn.to/3SrfPRr
Optional: A heavy Duty hole punch is wonderful for covers: amzn.to/4fly7xj
Craft knife and cutting mat: amzn.to/3WwZ3BM
    Scissors
    Metal ruler: amzn.to/4foxXoH
    Scrapbook paper (optional)
    Band-aids LOL!
Permanent glue stick (if you are covering your book boards) amzn.to/3SppibS OR you can use acid free glue and a brush
    optional cover tool I mentioned;
    amzn.to/4d34BL1

I've watched a few coptic stitching tutorials, and my eyes always end up glazing over during the actual stitching portions. A key difference here is that your video isn't silent - so it's a ton easier for me to wrap my head around the in-and-out required as opposed to just seeing the needle vanish and reappear. So thank you for that.

Same. I've been wanting to do this style for awhile, but I always get a little confused with the other tutorials.
I completely understand this and it's so easy to make!
      Thanks!

If you're wondering why people want a tutorial from you, it's because you show the struggles you have with your work, it's not a perfect, "look at how easy this is" video. It's down to earth and relatable, as you have always been, and that's one of the things that make you succesful. Also just commenting for the algorithm. Loved this project ❤

I learned to curve my own needle with a candlelight and two pliers. I made 3 sketchbooks with the DIY needle, and it works miracles. I also like to use clips wrapped in paper to keep the signatures in place when stitching. Great demonstration, thank you

    1) I now use a curved needle for book binding. I didn't use a curved one for the first book, but then I did for the second and it was a hallelujah experience. 2) I also have bled onto my books, but thankfully didn't for the few I gave as gifts!! 3) for My Friends Sketchbook I ran out of thread right before the last stitch attaching the cover. I was so annoyed.😂

Yaaayyy!!! I've been waiting for this video! I know there are others on YT, but I didn't want to watch theirs. I wanted to watch yours 😊 You break things down so that it becomes manageable, and there aren't a million complicated/expensive and specialized tools. It's just enjoyable to watch, regardless. (Thank you for making and posting this video. No need to worry so much about this and that. There will always be complainers. But there's also a ton of people who appreciate the stuff you make. Like me!)

Good rule of thumb for thread; a length the height of your signatures x the number of signatures plus two covers and a little extra to tie off knots. Have never run out of thread using this method. You did great!

But I wanted to learn how to make one of these that lay flat. Thank you so much for showing us how to do this and for including the struggles because we are real people.

I have to say, having watched a lot of tutorials on making painting sketch books I have always thought no chance… my left had was damaged in an accident so I don’t have a lot of feeling in my fingers so I struggle holding things down.
Your tutorial has made me smile a lot as I have a lot of large watercolour/ mixed media paper in large sizes and I can never get it right with a paper trimmer etc… not only have you shown me the easiest way for tearing you have shown me the best way a of backing a book, plus waxed thread I never would have thought of that!
Thanks again Lindsey another brilliant tutorial.❤

Just completed my first sketchbook! Your instructions were so helpful, especially all the comments about what could go wrong and how to fix it! Mine has several errors but it has good tension and it's so cool looking. I used 1 and 2/3 9x12" pads I had on hand, and used the backer boards for my covers. Not the most economical, but they were purchased I I the good ole days of 40% off coupons so not as expensive as it might have been and they were already in my stash. I'll use the big sheets next time. I even made a pocket and tucked my piercing template in for next time! Thanks again!

Wow, this is a great tutorial! I watched it twice so I could make a sketchbook of my own. I love the binding. I might have missed it but, just in case you didn't mention it ... if you are using watercolor paper that has a different surface on each side, I found that you need to flip one page of each signature so that the like textures face each other. I hope that makes sense. That way if you are doing a two page spread then you have the same texture on each page. It's easy, you just change the crease in one sheet of the signature before sandwiching it with the other page (so like textures are facing each other) and then sew them in. 🙂 Thank you for everything you share with us. ❤

PAPER TEARING TIP: when you crease (and use the bone folder) wet your fingertip and smear on some water ONLY on the crease edge. When you flip the paper and crease the other side, do the same thing. Wait a few seconds to let the water soak in, and THEN tear the paper. You’ll make a softly deckled edge that’s cleaner and less likely to get libits
Also, I have one of those rulers that you are using. It’s excellent!

Anyway, I don't have those large sheets of watercolor paper, I'm going to attempt to make a landscape style from a 9"x12" watercolor paper pad I have (will be 4 & 1/2"x6" when folded). Of course, I could easily make a 6"x 9" too. Thank you again for doing this 😁. You look so very beautiful today, but then again you always do. Take care and God bless you and yours. A good way to make your own watercolor sketchbook, if you have hand pain like me, is to use Vicky Papaioannou’s method of the happy planner disks and punch. The punch is strong enough to punch through 1 sheet of 90 to 140 lb watercolor paper.

If you don't have foam of any kind, an old magazine (or old phone book) works. I do recommend a teflon bone folder. Well worth the cost. I just love mine. I like to pinch/tuck the very little bit of the corner where it overlaps by using my fingernail. Works great. Lindsay, you did great with your instructions. There are many ways to accomplish the same end. The more different people you watch, sometimes the more confused one gets. We each find what works best for us. I have found with the final cover, if you grab a curved needle it slips up and around the stitch easily. My final stitch is a surgeon's knot to finish.

I was thinking about using a couple of layers of corrugated cardboard, like from an Amazon box. It seems like it would be easier to go through than a phone book. ❤ I'm also wondering if I could use my scoring tool because it does have those grooves in it. ❤

@@windywednesday4166 absolutely use what you have. I tend to punch my signatures in a little different manner and I happen to use an old, small book because I use a template into each signature. Yes, a scoring tool will work. I only shared about the teflon bonefolder is because when I make cards, it doesn't leave a shine or mark on the paper. It is totally not necessary. Have fun making yours.

When I was doing more art collage & art journaling, I used the NORI brand of rice paste for a lot of my work. I loved the texture and pleasant light fragrance of it. I got it at my local fine art supply store, but Michael's may carry it too. I've also used white PVA liquid glue (polyvinyl alcohol, a synthetic polymer) highly recommended for book binding...but it's not so environmentally friendly as it is made from petro-chemicals like all plastics. I think YES paste is made from wheat. I didn't know that Elmers and most other white liquid adhesives are also made from PVA The white glue sold as "PVA" (Lineco is one brand) is supposed to be a higher quality product than the regular Elmers and others for paper crating and book binding. So many choices. 🧐

I'm so sorry you stabbed your finger for us😢. I just thought 🤔🤔 I'll use the back chipboard of the watercolor paper pad to make my sketchbook cover and cover that with some of my special (liked very much) scrapbook pages, then I'll have a unique to my likings sketchbook 😊. Thanks for shedding blood 🤢 for us, LoL. Hope it wasn't too painful. I agree that adding your extra thread on the inside makes more sense than on the outside. And yeah me, I've actually got a curved needle just for this process. God bless you for doing this. Love and hugs 🤗. Becky B

Yay bookbinding! There are enough different kinds of bindings, you could do a different bookbinding video every week for years and still not run out of new ones. Love this kind of thing.
Lindsay, I recently had to resupply my YES! paste and couldn't believe how expensive it had gotten. I looked around for a replacement paste and found "Grandmother Stover's," a "stikflat" glue (it's a paste, but that's what the label says). Works great and it's acid free which was important to me.
Another one I found, and loved, was one called Nori Paste. For those sensitive to fragrance, this one has a lovely (at first) light floral scent -- ended up having to find it a new home. Still and all, it is a good product -- also acid free.
Both of these are running just a bit over $12 at the moment, while the YES! paste is running over $28 (boooo!)

@@thefrugalcrafter Seriously! Same here -- this was at Amazon, so maybe it was just one of those wonky 'take advantage of y'all' deals. I think I did shop around at the time (a few months ago, but had to finally give up the search -- that's when I ran across the other two. The Stover is most like the original YES! paste and works great. The Nori is really nice paste as well, but has a lighter "dreamier" feel to it -- I would likely have gone with that just because it felt so nice to use. That scent, tho .... I am over-the-top sensitive to fragrance.

@madhabitz it's mad expensive. I dropped down the rabbit hole one day looking for alternatives. I ended with extra wide double sided tape by elizabeth craft designs. (still stupid expensive, but really quick and clean to use if you don't care about the odd line) bookbinding is so addictive! ❤❤❤ there are videos floating about on youtube that show you how to make your own wheat paste but I'm not that patient!

I can see what you meant about having the cover a little bigger, but it will be perfect for inktober this year. I used Bristol and the back of the pad cut in half for my first attempt. May up my game on next one and use a decorated cover. Thanks again.

@thefrugalcrafter It was fun. I cut some copy paper into thirds and folded it over into bundles. Stapling them made the holes, so I didn't have to really measure. I used an empty tissue box for the cover and papered it with the craft papper filling Amazon is using now instead of plastic. Lol, it's definitely a different look than what you're doing, but it works. ❤️
