Alonne set, llewellyn set, mad warrior set, burnt ivory king set, black drakeblood set, black dragon set, loyce set, charred loyce set, etc, etc. Are insane armors that they should put in DS3, maybe DS2 aint the best of the three, but basically is the dark souls with the best armors of the dark souls series.......
the armour of thorns is obtained by going into the cathedral of the deep while embered and being invaded by Kirk. upon killing him you get his weapon and shield, make your way to the shortcut and go up the elevator to the top of the cathedral drop down on a ledge and find rosarias bed chamber his armour is found here only after defeating him. (note do NOT kill the deacons boss first or he won't spawn)
So part of that outfit you can buy mid-game after getting the ash I believe and then once you kill Leonhard and revive Rosaria you will get his mask which is the headgear on the outfit. Fortunately I made a video that walks you through the process to killing Leonhard so you don't mess up :)
