Hastings Pier was nearly destroyed by fire a few years ago! Just saved some of it. Now it is not too bad! St Leonards had a pier which was cut in half in the war to stop the Germans from landing !! I just remember it when I was little before they got rid of it .

Often a view - of one wh devoutly considers himself as a Sussex Man (having been born in a Sussex Village, lived for parts of my life in said village, I am humbled by rour research and insight - this latter only available to those who are not "locals". Accordingly I an indebted to you Kind Sir for your researches showing details not readily available elsewhere.
My family came across from The Continent eith a load of French persons who did much to subdue tle locals - however time has a habit of smoothing out ancestries and who later become 'natives'.
Your videos have helped me to understand moure of the counties that I love, thus I am grateful to you!

The river Ouse at York was pronounced Ou-sa by the Vikings. Jorvik was an international port the warehouses and a couple of viking cargo longships were found when a large factory was demolished in the noughties. There has been Roman warehouses, jetties and ships found on the Foss as well. But this site has been standing for decades protecting the finds. Now years after there are many blocks of flats next to the river next to Foss Island. Apart from Sussex the other Ouses are all in the Danelaw.

Fascinating and informative videos, thank you. I have just finished watching them with my family (Grandparents, parents, siblings and myself) who were all but one born and raised in Sussex. We have all learned a lot! My grandfather was a professor at the University of Sussex so it was interesting to hear of your connection.

That series was absolutely brilliant, thanks. Even having lived in shoreham all my life there was plenty of history and facts you presented that I'd never heard before... I'm gonna bookmark this and watch it again with my nephew 👍🏻

I've just had your channel come up in my suggestions, now subscribed. I can't believe you didn't mention the most famous photograph of the third HMS Sussex, taken a few weeks before she sailed into Singapore. The perfect imprint of a kamikaze plane that bounced off her armour belt and sank.

Ah, that would have been excellent if that had turned up in my research, but alas it did not! Thanks for bringing it up!
And wow! I just googled it -- OMG! That's quite a mark! I wonder if the ship's captain took it as a shoot-down credit?

The Home of Cricket is at Halfpenny Down, on the South Downs to the west of Sussex, but that`s in Hampshire.

England used to have cities in the American sense until 1974, only they weren't called cities, they were called county boroughs.

    • @tobeytransport2802
      @tobeytransport2802 ปีที่แล้ว +1

And now we have unitary authorities... one of which is Bristol which is considered a city and ceremonial county!
Most however are simply districts within a ceremonial county that have assumed the powers of a county council because the area is pretty urban, in Sussex one of those is the City of Brighton and Hove which is a District within East Sussex that just happens to have a city charter that also just happens to have assumed the powers of a county council and removed itself from East Sussex County Council due to its larger population and more efficiently running itself.
These are similar to county boroughs I suppose.
The other example of Unitary Authorities are completely new and started to be used in the early 2000s and it is when a county is so rural that having the county council run everything is the best system, for example Rutland, the Isle of Wight, and Somerset (except bath which is its own district unitary authority as in the example above.
You just gotta love english local government... 😂

Why, so I did! Astonishing, but at the time I made the video I didn't know it had one. Later I visited Hastings and saw the pier, but failed to notice my earlier glaring omission! Thanks for making me aware!

In terms of music, why leave out the beautiful Sussex Carol? The first line is: "On Christmas night all Christians sing.." th-cam.com/video/wxaLyJ5G4zM/w-d-xo.html

Thanks very much! I'm still catching up on local pronunciation. For example, when I first saw the town name "Lewes", I wanted to say "Looz". Didn't know it was 2 syllables until the wife corrected me. Much later I discovered that the original pronunciation was in fact "Looz" (see my video about the Rivers of Sussex for an explanation), but that had changed in the meantime!
