- Jason Kidd further added to his legacy as the greatest defensive PG of his era and the 2nd best defensive PG of all-time after Gary Payton with a phenomenal defensive performance on Kobe in the 2011 WCSF.
He legitimately locked down Kobe in the 4th quarter of Game 1 and slowed him down in Game 2 as well. In Game 3, Kobe had more success against Kidd compared to the first 2 games. Kobe got off to a hot start on Kidd in Game 4, but the Lakers were quickly blown out so it didn't matter - กีฬา
& what a lot of people need to understand is Jason Kidd is one of the best defenders at the PG position of all time, he's from the same city as Gary Payton & learned so much from him when he was younger

Kidd cannot block Kobe's shot at all, but he blocks his eyesight to the rim. What a smart player. And he is strong enough to Box Kobe out to ineffective area. Great and smart defender.

Great vid. I'm a Kobe fan. But I do remember how Jason Kidd's defense stunned me in 2011. That two-round playoff run was full of disappointment. In my memory, I remembered how the Hornets and the Mavericks torn the Lakers apart with pick-and-roll. That was the first time I've seen kobe showing vulnerability since I became a fan in 2005. I was actually really pleased to at least seeing some of the tough shots kobe was able to make in the video, because I remember I was super mad about the Lakers defense and didn't pay much attention the their offense.
You also gotta remember kobe was playing on that severely sprained ankle he injured vs the hornets in the first round that required him to wear a boot and use crutches . He wasn't healthy in this series at all.

kidd on one on one man to man chest to chest defense bothered guys and barea on offense with his penetration really messed up kobe Brandon roy LeBron and kd and westbrook on both ends during the 2011 playoffs and it was just amazing to watch....the 2 shortest whitest guys on the court caused the most damage on both ends vs these taller darker more talented players...shame they couldn't keep barea or chandler ...they had an awesome starting 5 and great 6 man rotation ...losing role guys like haywod peja and deshawn hurts but you could always replace them...barea and chandler were irreplaceable key guys to a title team who brought something to each end of the floor no one else could...

kidd did such an effective job of defending kobe that the mavs never had the need to do double team... kobe's shooting is his own worst enemy. this is why jordan is greater than kobe.
when jordan's jump shot was not falling down he would find other ways to score. drive to the basket or get fouled for free throws....when kobe's shot doesnt fall down he just keeps chucking up jump shots and 3pts lol. even in his wizards days jordan was able to find more ways to score than just jump shooting or 3s.

There were a few shots i felt like Kobe makes routinely but just missed em.
I think he was having a bad series in general, as well as the entire Lakers squad, but coming off of 3 straight Finals, your team will wear down soon enough.
Nevertheless Kidd's physical defense is criminally underrated and that Maverick defense was absolutely amazing and if it weren't for that kind of physical defense, Kobe probably would have exploded on someone like Terry even if the Lakers as a whole were underperforming.

it's too early to say he'll be the best ever if he keeps this up like magic said. He needs to win a bunch of rings before he's in that discussion and that's no guarantee.
He might be having the best scoring season ever but I don't know about the best overall season ever. Including playoffs I'd take a lot of prime Jordan's seasons over him because of his defense, and Hakeem and Duncan too.
Mainly because of his lack of defense, I don't see Curry carrying a team like the 2003 Spurs to the title. Or the 1994 rockets when Hakeem had to lead them in 5/5 for the whole playoffs which has never happened on a title team.
I'd even take 1997 playoffs Jordan at age 34 over him, he led the Bulls in 5/5 for the last 3 rounds and beat 3 56+ win teams and 2 60+ win teams. I can't see curry carrying that load against that level of teams.
But he has a lot of years ahead of him, and if he gets even better, it might come to the point where his offense is so good that his bad defense won't matter.

Yeah it's like magic. He's the best ever at making his teammates better offensively and best passer so that made up for a lot of his bad defense. And like curry he got a lot of steals but was still never a great defender.
Also yeah Shaq and Lebron were better in those years. Id take 00-02 Shaq over him too. Kobe also went crazy in the 2001 playoffs and played great defense - while having to share the ball with Shaq which makes his numbers more impressive. I'd take Kobe from the 2001 playoffs over curry as well.
But curry has a lot of years left and I can definitely see him crack the top 10, and maybe the top 5 if he wins a lot when his career is over.

as tough as Kidd was on defense he could not keep Bryant from getting a good look. Bryant just missed a lot.
He was constantly in good positions and blocked his sight to the basket, making it harder for him to score period. He knows he couldn't block his shot, you don't always have to block the shot to be annoyingly effective.
Why do you feel we got swept
Lakers choked and blew leads in the 4th quarters of Games 1 and 3 which were close games. If they hung on down the stretch of either Game 1 or 3 they might have had a shot in this series but they choked both times.
Their defense was also poor, and they let the Mavs kill them from 3-pointers. and at the same time everyone on the Lakers struggled offensively. Lastly the Mavs bench was way better than the Lakers bench

This is the series that made me doubt Kobe's Greatness. I dont care what anyone says, if your the defending Champions you dont get swept in the Playoffs. Kobe got outplayed and Phil Jackson got out Coached. Kobe had a great run in his career but this was embarrassing

He had surgery later after getting swept, which made him look younger the following season which was a lockout, and worked out great for him because it gave him more time to recover. You can't doubt someone's greatness when the man is all banged up and hurt. The one player to look at from this series was Gasol, who seem like he forgot how to play.

Not to disrespect a deceased man, but Jason Kidd was a better defensive guard than Kobe yet Kobe got more All Defensive Team selections.
Not to say Kidd did a poor job guarding Kobe but a lot of these I wouldn't consider great defense and I'm sure Kobe expected to make them. A lot of this footage was pretty routine defense for anyone, especially where Kobe passed it. The help defense was honestly more impressive than Kidd's individual defense. And 3:45 for anyone who says hand checking doesn't happen in todays game, especially the playoffs. Plus Kobe was injured this series and I remember Gasol was playing like absolute ass and the whole lakers were trying to get him involved all playoffs and it probably disrupted their rhythm.
