    We're renting these speakers for an upcoming gig, and we were able to take them home ahead of time. So, we did some tests with them!
    To be clear, we're not comparing the 35Ps to the ZLX 12Ps to determine which of the two is better. Yes, we know the 35Ps are going to sound better. Yes, we know the 35Ps cost over three time as much. The reason we're comparing the two speakers is because the ZLX 12P is a very popular speaker which a lot of people have heard and are familiar with the sound. Therefore, the ZLX is being used as a reference point so that people can get an idea of what the 35P sounds like based on how different it sounds to the ZLX.
    As usual, we don't take credit for any of the songs heard in this video. All rights for all songs go to their respective owners.

    So you guys never answered, how hard was it to get them into clipping at the gig?

    • @SLMEntertainment

      They ended up being in limit pretty much the entire time during the rave, and we didn't realize it until we saw the footage from the gig. They're really not all that loud, but if we had to buy loudspeakers in this range we'd probably pick these over QSC/JBL equivalents.

      SLM Entertainment JBL SRX835p is sound bit smoother and better in my opinion but not much. Ev is my second choice.

      @@soundfreak8892 I never had those problems after using it over 5 years. I do EQ those speakers like any other speakers depends how venue/ room sounds. The SRX speakers was one of those need minimal tweaks to sound good in the same class/price range in my opinion.

      @@SLMEntertainment the ETX line has pre-anticipation limiters as apart of their DSP. If the limiter kicks on on loud peaks, you do have more in the amp. As long as the limit indicator isn’t solid or showing it’s “temp” message, you’re fine. I had to turn off my LED limit indicator and just use my ears. I was much happier then. 😊

    The ETX is the flag ship series for EV on the powered speakers. As you start to push them- you will only hear them sound better. Try pairing the ETX 35sp with the 18SP powered subs. It will blow you away- a full 4 way system!

    I love the sound of EV, especially these. On the other hand, the only thing I hate about them is that the horizontal dispersion is only 60 degrees. You have to add another one to each of them should your audience is spread wide.

    The first time I heard the 35p's I honestly thought I was hearing a small RCF line array. The mid range is so punchy and powerful, It smashes allot of it's competition including the 153's from QSC. One more thing, the 35p's are incredibly loud (although not the stated 136db) they offer ample headroom and have great throw. You can't go wrong with these speakers. I wish I could say the same for the QSC counterparts.

      ***** I haven't heard them but i can say from physics alone that they won't sound half as good as the 35P's as the 35P's have their oew dedicated mid range driver which means that it's mid range sounds much better especially in the case of the 35P. I can't say what the volume difference would be like but I can say that the 35P would sound much better.

    I'll give you some setup advice so you get the cleanest sound without distortion or limiting. First turn down the master and input level on the back of the speaker to mute. Next play something on your mixer. Get your levels right and then turn your mixer master level to unity or max you will be using it at. Next turn up the input level only on the back of the speaker until you see it reach -0 dbu. This will be your cleanest input level. Now that your input level set to 0 turn up the master level on the back of the speaker back to 0db. Now anything you play thru the mixer won't go over the threshold and your sound will be good all night long. Basically with anything you plug into the ETX speaker, wether its a microphone or DJ mixer make sure you set your input level correctly before you start playing. Don't just leave it at zero and crank up the DJ mixer. You will go over the threshold and your sound will sound stressed or even limit if your don't set it up first.

    • @jambitch
      @jambitch 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Getting back to what I was saying earlier about setting proper input gain, the ETX manual even states to start with the input level at infinity/mute and then turn it up to the proper level. This is the biggest mistake I see when people post opinions or reviews about the ETX. They have no clue of how to set the proper input gain. These are not your old school blinking dot level speakers. You can visually see your input gain on the back of them. Pretty soon that will be standard on all speakers.

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dj Jest Jamm This approach is completely irrelevant for this video. This was not a test to see how loud the speakers could get. This was a test to see how good the speakers sounded. Nothing in the chain was clipping, not at the mixer nor at the speaker. I had the speakers set to -20db master so that I could have the speaker inputs set to unity, and be able to have more than 1/32" of volume knob rotation on the mixer to reach the desired volume (70db), which is nowhere near either of the speakers maximum output. I honestly I have no idea what prompted this long speech on proper gain structure. It's like if you had a video on your channel showcasing your brand new "X" speaker in your living room and I wrote up a long response talking about proper speaker placement in a room. It would be completely irrelevant.
      Also, I almost never take this approach in setting speaker volumes at gigs. The first thing I do is set all the speakers to unity. Then I turn up the source audio channel on our mixer to unity, or beneath it. Then I turn up the master volume knob until I reach a desired volume level. This ensures that no clipping occurs anywhere, and the speakers are almost always never limiting or experiencing unnecessary stress. If I do put the speakers into limit, it's because I need more volume out of them, not because I set the gain structure wrong.
      Next time, please ask us something like "did you set the gain structure right?" as opposed to trying to educate us on a subject that we're already well versed. We appreciate your trying to help, but it's unnecessary and feels like you're implying that we have no idea what we're doing.

    I have had these since November 2016 I bought the 12p ETX, I bought these and I'm having problems with them clipping already ? I'm a soloist singer, I've only ever set them up on ODB same on my mixer, I don't drive them at all, I even have a BBE Sonic Maximiser, I use DYNACORD mixer newest model unpowered version, yet my EV ETX 12p have been clipping I'm very disappointed after spending over £2000 on these, I used to have EV ZX5 15" powered with Crown XTX 4000 amp lovely sound flawless never missed a beat in 9 years, wish I'd kept them, only reason I changed was carrying to much for a soloist, will be contacting EV really disappointed.
    Brilliant review though.

      Well, I had a really old EV P600 power amp and the bloody thing had blew up, so I emailed EV directly and it took them a while to get back and, it wasn't very helpful...not only that, I once used a pair of ELX15 powered cabs, merely running vocals for a small acoustic event, one started sounding a bit crackly and eventually bit the dust...LOL, neither of them were being pushed nor limiting at all, and the temperature was fine. I checked all connections and the power was running very stable, we ran off the other though, went fine other than the people at the sides couldn't hear vocals. I don't hate them though, I really love using their mics though, had good luck in that area. :P

      tadhg sweeney So the only time you had an issue with their warranty department is when you tried to claim the warranty on a really old amplifier? If that's the case then I don't think we'll be too worried about it.

      @tadhgsweeney9241 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, no. I had an issue with a ELX 15 active cab, that was the only thing I tried to claim warranty on. The old amp was a tinkering project for me to practice soldering on. Camp Hill gig was kinda weak.... not your fault tho.
    Get QSC gear! EV is OK but it doesn't hold a candle to QSC trust me I've had EV and they were good but when they started acting up I sold them . The ETX line would be just as good as the KW line from QSC but its quite a bit more money,when those sub's start smelling like the voice coil glue is coming to it's boiling point is not a good sign, sell while you can . keep up the good work.

    • @dougberry4674
      @dougberry4674 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      QSC gear actually kinda sucks. Even with our ETXs being not quite to our expectations, they still destroy our friends kw181s. Also, our ZLXs destroy their k10s.
      This of course is just my opinion though.

    Would you recommend a speaker stack such as you have with the EVS or a line array system. I am upgrading as i have started doing 3 day festivals (100-500 people). budget is like 8-10k :( we are a growing small business

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I would honestly recommend neither. First, with that budget you couldn't afford even the smallest of line arrays. I would recommend investing in a Danley Sound Labs system. Specifically, the SM80 and TH-118 boxes. The SM80 is basically a replacement for a 4-6 box line array hang (while being 400 watts continuous), and the TH-118 is about as loud as two average dual 18's, while needing about the same amount of power as a single dual 18. All of this at the same time as sounding way better than any line array. The way line arrays achieve their goals also creates lots of audio problems, and you don't get that from point source boxes.
      SM80: www.danleysoundlabs.com/products/loud-speakers/molded-synergy-horns/sm80/
      TH-118: www.danleysoundlabs.com/products/subwoofers/tapped-horns/th118/

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yea, apart from how bad those might end up sounding, or even worse their reliability, they're not gonna be very loud. One of the Danley TH-118s would be about as loud, if not louder than all of the subs combined in that listing, as well as two SM80's would be way louder than the tops. You could get 2 SM80's and one TH-118 including amplification and processing to fit within your budget. The Danley system would give you lots of room to grow (as it really takes 2-3 TH-118's to keep up with a single SM80 depending on your tastes), while being much more cost effective and sounding much, much better. Also you have to keep in mind you'd have to buy processing and amplification for that line array stack, which is a decent amount of more cash that you may not have accounted for.

      Elisha Soussan Thanks! Although for one thing, neither of those speakers are even close to being in the same league as the ETX-35P. The only other speakers I've heard that sound as good as the 35P are $5k a box line array cabinets. As for another thing, the B1800HP has identical specs to the B1800D-PRO, which we own two of and had used for years. It's a fantastic sub for the money, but doesn't even come close to comparing to the ETX sub in terms of output.

      dmiraie1 Yea no that noise you're hearing is the noise floor of the preamp inside of our camera. The noise floor of either of these speakers (ETX or ZLX) is very low. It's only noticeable with 0 music playing and your ear right up against the grill.

    • @Dantallica1
      @Dantallica1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roger that, thanks! How would you say these sound for rock rhythm guitar- lower mids, etc?

    • @SLMEntertainment
      @SLMEntertainment  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      dmiraie1 Honestly, specifically for rhythm guitar I would have no idea. We haven't played any rock music through them and wouldn't have any previous experience to compare them to. We are almost entirely EDM DJ's, so sorry that we couldn't be more help!
      However, I can say that the ETX's have some of the best midrange we've heard to date. It has incredible punch and intelligibility. Overall, these speakers just have fantastic sound quality. That should translate over into being able to reproduce all genre's of music well. Any speaker that's only good for one genre, isn't a very good speaker.

    Would you reccomend the ETX35p's over the QSC KW153's?

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brian Diener That's a really difficult question to answer, and honestly I can't really answer it. When I'm comparing two speakers, I look at a few key things to differentiate the two.
      1) How do their max volumes compare
      2) How good do they sound at and beneath max volume
      3) How reliable are they
      Starting with the first point, I can't answer that. I do have experience with both speakers, but I've never had both side by side to compare them or measured both of them to get a definitive answer. They"re both very loud though, and are good for like 400 person shows or so, depending on the desired average SPL and coverage area. I've also measured the 35P to do around 118dB A weighted at 1 meter distance on axis once it"s just barely started to flicker into peak limit.
      As for sound quality, the ETX definitely wins. It has fantastic, almost perfect "Hi-Fi" sound quality right out of the box, and with some minor tweaking sounds impeccable. Sound quality is really good all the way up to limit, especially considering the price. As for the KW153, it by no means sounds bad, but doesn't compare to the 35P. Out of the box it sounds harsh and painful, even not at max volume. Though with a good system tech and a lot of EQing, you can get a really really good sound out of it. However, and this seems to be a trend with all MI grade QSC gear, the more you turn it up the worse it sounds. I know this is applicable with pretty much every speaker in existence, but with the 153 you can't really get the most out of it because this flaw is so exaggerated. You start to run into a lot of distortion, harshness and painfulness if you go beyond this threshold of distortion, so you can't really put the box into limit without a lot of sound quality degradation. The opposite is true with the 35P. It sounds amazing at lower levels, and sound quality absolutely goes away some when you approach max volume, but it still sounds plenty good and totally usable at max volume. You can easily put this box into limit without knowing it because it doesn't really sound like you're stressing it. The 35P is DEFINITELY much easier to get a much better sound out of.
      And now onto reliability. AFAIK, QSC K series and KW series gear is some of the most reliable stuff in the MI market. You can stress the crap out of them night after night and they'll keep on going. Although, not having any long term experience with the KW gear I can't confirm this personally, but a local wedding DJ company we work with sometimes (Klock Entertainment) has an inventory of around 26 K12's, 2 KW153's and 4 KW181's and I don't think they've had much, if any problems at all. As for the 35P, close to the shipping launch of the ETX line I'd heard of some people having their 35P drivers dying when not being stressed, and just being not very reliable in general. Combine that with our terrible experience with the ETX-18SP (shitty sound quality and blown driver after not much use) and EV's god awful warranty and customer service, and that doesn't leave me with much good I can say about the reliability of the 35P. Although, it's totally possible that you could get a pair and never have a single problem with them for 5 years. I don't have nearly enough long term experience with the 35P to be able to say anything definitive about its reliability.
      So, when it comes down to it, if I had to chose one or the other, which would I chose? Honestly, I have no idea. If I was renting a pair for a show I would hands down pick the 35P. It sounds way better than the 153, its SPL capability is comparable to the KW153, and since I'm only renting it reliability isn't a concern for me. But if I had to pick one to purchase right now, I wouldn't. I don't have nearly enough experience with either speaker to make a definitive call. With the 153 you'll probably get better reliability, but you might find out after buying it that it can't go as loud as you thought or wanted it to go due to it getting too distorted at high volumes. Or you could get it and think it's perfect for what you need to use it for. I've used it for larger proms and it's performed totally up to my standards for those events. The proms I'm talking about we actually have gig logs of, and are the Central Dauphin HS Prom 2015 gig log and the Elizabethtown Prom 2015 gig log.
      The one thing that I can say for certain, though, is that if you have the extra money or can wait to save up the extra money, buy a pair of Danley Sound Labs SM80's with a Crown XLS1000 instead. This combo should end up costing less than 4 of either the KW153 or ETX-35P, but ends up being worth more than 8 of either of the speakers. The SM80 is just one hell of a beast of a speaker, and outperforms both the KW153 and 35P in every category (ESPECIALLY regarding the SPL capabilities). Even though the XLS1000 is way underpowered for the SM80, that amp can still push the SM80 to levels way beyond what either the 153 or 35P are capable of.
      Sorry if this response isn't what you were expecting, but I don't have nearly enough experience with either speaker to definitively say to buy one over the other.

      +Alex Berry Thanks for the response, exactly what I wanted to know. I'm a QSC guy and looking to upgrade my K series tops to 153's but I I like that the 35p's are 2000 watts. I'm mainly concerned with being able to fill a gym for the types of events I'm doing. I borrowed some 153's for my last event to try out and used them with my KW181 subs. The sound quality at high volume seemed consistent so I'm not worried about that, but they were clipping throughout the night, and the perfect volume was only when they were at their limit. I need volume to fill these big rooms so I guess I'm wondering are the 35p's that noticeably louder or should I stick with QSC?

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Diener If the only way you can get the SPL you desire is by clipping and/or limiting the 153, then you're gonna need something much louder than either the 153 or the 35P. They're in the same category when it comes to output, so the 35P might be a little louder or quieter in comparison, but there's not gonna be any big difference between the two in terms of output. Also, the advertised "2000 watt" rating of the EV box is just marketing fairy dust. When crossed over for use with subs it pulls around 100 watts from the wall while limiting. Never use the wattage of a speaker to try to gauge how loud it is. Sensitivity + wattage is what you want to look at to get an idea of how loud something is. Wattage by itself means absolutely nothing.
      It sounds to me like the already mentioned Danley SM80 will be the perfect speaker for you. It's WAY louder than either the 35P or the 153, lighter, smaller, sounds WAY better (especially compared to the 153 in limit, IMO it's useless at that volume due to pain and distortion) and is way more cost effective. For comparison, I've measured the 35P to do 118db just barely at limit (not even close to its advertised 136db), and the SM80 can easily do what its spec states (128db continuous, 134db peak). At 400 watts input the SM80 is 10db louder than the 35P at limit. That means if speakers coupled perfectly in the real world, you'd need 10 35P's to keep up with 1 SM80. The only thing that I didn't mention previously about this speaker is that it is not a full range speaker, as it really can't go beneath 110hz. So subs need to be used with the SM80. Other than that, I can't think of a single bad thing about it. The fact that it isn't a powered speaker could be considered a con, but I actually consider it a pro when doing bigger shows. It's much easier to just get a single cable to the speaker on a bigger rig than it is to try to get signal AND power to it.

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Antonio arrieta 3 way will always win over 2 way. There's also 3 way systems and 3 way speakers. For instance, a 3 way system would consist of a 2 way speaker and a sub together. Running a 3 way speaker like the 35P in combination with subs will then end you up with having a 4 way system, which in turn beats a 3 way system every time. Yet while a 4 way system will always sound better than a 3 way system, it's not always the most practical. As well as there are definitely 2 way speakers that sound better than some 3 way speakers. There's a million different variables that go into how good a speaker sounds, but generally a 3 way speaker will sound better than a 2 way speaker.

    The speakers both sound really distorted and the mids don't sound that good. Do they sound better in the room?

    • @SLMEntertainment
      @SLMEntertainment  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. The video doesn't do them justice. But the thing is, on the speakers we use for editing videos (KRK Rokit 5 studio monitors) and Alex's hifi speakers (Klipsch Forte's) neither of them sound distorted at all during the testing portion of the video. Except for the 35P's during Gnar. They have so much midrange punch that the snare in that song coming from the 35P's distorts the mic. You may want to listen to the source tracks and see if you're hearing the same type of distortion.

    • @dougberry4674
      @dougberry4674 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Video also sounded fine on my laptop speakers and Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro headphones. Still, they both sound amazing in person. You should definitely go hear a pair of either of these speakers in person, then come back and watch the video again.
      Edit: Maybe you're hearing the distortion of the songs and thinking it's speaker distortion?

  • @jonnyweston
    @jonnyweston 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    In seriousness though - y'all keep referring to the ZLX vs the ETX.
    Realistically are these fair comparative statements to make - given that the ZLX is priced 2 price ranges away from the ETX (ZLX,ELX, EKX then ETX)? Its like comparing a Ford fiesta to a Ferrari in some ways.

    • @dougberry4674
      @dougberry4674 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jonnyweston That's true, but what's really interesting here in my opinion is that the ZLX is still really really good, even when compared to something that costs 3.75 times more than it. But of course, the ETX still wins in terms of volume and sound quality.

    • @SLMEntertainment
      @SLMEntertainment  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That wasn't really the point. The point was to try to give the viewer an idea of what the ETX sounds like if they've already heard what a ZLX sounds like. Not to say purely that the ETX is better than a ZLX. That's obvious.

    • @jonnyweston
      @jonnyweston 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doug Berry
      Yes indeed - I have now 12 ZLX12p on inventory and they are a great box for the money - there is no doubt on that.
      I now also have 4 x ETX18sp plus 4 ETX15sp. I have actually sold all my Passive Martin Audio Gear and am using these rigs for my regular band gigs - I might actually aim at getting another pair of the subs and the ETX35p also now too.
      2 subs per side is a great option and really makes quite a difference, more than you'd think for it really only being one single sub more per side.
      The difference between the ETX35 and the ETX15 is quite remarkable actually - nothing sounds forced in the mids, as you would expect from a 3 way box. Great systems.

  • @gaffle-411
    @gaffle-411 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This comparison is majorly flawed. I get your comparison "to give someone who hasn't heard the 35P..." point but you need to at least have both speakers on an equal plane (ie: both in the air OR both on the floor). Besides the obvious size, amp and driver quality differences, your ETX35P's will have MUCH MORE bass presence due to them being coupled to the floor and your ZLX's are essentially in the air, lending to less low end.

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DJ GaFFLe Wrong about two things.
      One, this is NOT a comparison in the sense that we were trying to figure out which was better. We were using the ZLX as a reference for someone that has heard it, but hasn't heard the ETX.
      Two, the ZLX's are essentially NOT in the air. They need to be like 20 feet or so away from any surface in order to be even close to be considered in free space. Being 3 feet off the ground, they still couple pretty damn well. They were definitely not in free space, but that's not the point is it? Because we weren't comparing the ZLX to the ETX to try to figure out which was better.

    • @gaffle-411
      @gaffle-411 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Any speaker off the floor that high is NOT coupled. It doesn't take "20 feet or so" to notice a drop in bass response. My point is, your reference is skewed and they should both be either on the floor or elevated, THEN go back and forth between them with your "reference" test.
      Take a pair of like ZLX'S (apples-to-apples) with one on the floor and the other 40" off the ground; even there, the one on the ground will have more bass response than the other, thus skewing the test.

    • @alexberry3833
      @alexberry3833 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DJ GaFFLe You cannot achieve free space conditions in a small indoor room. It's just not possible. But, regardless, lets move on.
      Bass response was my lowest priority when listening to these speakers. We basically never run a system without using subs, so in this instance, I was listening to everything else. The midrange, the treble, impulse response, clarity, etc. Not how much bass the cabs put out, because not only could I care less, but the ZLX on paper can't even compare. Also, common sense would dictate that the 15" driver in the much bigger and wooden cabinet would produce more bass. I decided to not run HPFs on the speakers because not cutting the bass made the music more interesting, and why not. It wasn't a concern, so who cares.
      Also, this wasn't meant to be a super detailed or scientific test/comparison/whatever you want to call it. It's just a simple demonstration to hopefully help some people get a slightly better idea of what the ETX's sound like. Not offer any definitive answers.
      Bottom line, you can't achieve free space conditions in a house, and bass was not a concern.
      *Edited for spacing*

      DJ GaFFLe Free space acoustically is not going to be an issue because
      A. Thats a small room. There’s no way in hell they are getting that problem there.
      B. They are 3 ft off the floor. My 12p’s can couple when they are 8+ feet off the ground. There is no chance of them NOT coupling.

      Jorge Ardon That wasn't the point of this video. The point of this video was to give someone who hasn't heard the 35P, but has heard the ZLX-12P, an idea of what the 35P sounds like by comparing it to the ZLX. It wasn't a head to head showdown against the ZLX, the 35P obviously comes out on top. The ZLX was being used as a reference.
