  • As it was difficult to determine the value vs the performance online from reviews, I bought two of the subwoofers and not only tested them but upgraded the drivers as well. EV Electro Voice ZLX-15P PA tops, Seismic Audio New Madrid 18" Drivers ETX 18SP Subwoofers. Used for South Chicagoland DJanotomus.COM mobile events.
Video Corrections: I meant 8 driver fasteners, not 18
Total swap time was 20 minutes per subwoofer enclosure.
There are three Phillips wood screws on either side of the grill and it comes right off.
There are two square-shaped metal bars, etched into the front of the box which pull right off. No tools needed.
There are then 8 Phillips Machine Screws holding the EV Driver in place.
Last, there are two wires in a push to release configuration (very easy) to disconnect the driver.
Should you pull out the wire harness clip that connects on the amp, it is the left two of the four pins. The right two pins do not produce sound in my test.
Reverse procedure to assemble! Enjoy. I will be making a walkthrough or video with more pictures to help in the very near future so stay tuned! Thank you for watching and or reading!

Ever consider the fact that maybe the EV woofers needed some break in time? I mean...what do you know that the engineers at EV don’t....

  • @djcheko3108

I own a pair of EV ETX 18 my fríen owns the same subs unfortunately he blow out one of his subs so I came across this video and decided to replace the damaged woofer for this seismic audio woofer the same exact the new Madrid and it was so disappointing this sound can’t even compare to the electro voice not even close. The reason we didn’t get the original speaker is because there were none on stock anywhere online

You should check out the B&C 18TBW100 subwoofer drivers. I think you will be very impressed. They are definitely more powerful than the seismic (respectively) and made in Italy.

I bought one 3 years ago and the driver blew up at the third event. They sent me a replacement speaker but I bought a Peavey Lo-Max woofer and put that in instead. No problems ever since, the only issue is that the cabinet weighs 15lbs more. I personally will never risk using anything from seismic.

The Driver that comes in the etx 18sp is junk! I upgraded to LAVOCE SAF184-03 night and day difference! I can't stop laughing !

I replaced it with the new madrid 18 and it does jot sound as load as with the original woofer. Have 2 etx 18sp and had same signal going to them side my side and compare them one at a time. The original woofer hit way harder and there was a noticeable difference in pressure between them

The low end on your subs sounds fantastic in this video! I'm in the same situation but with EV's lighter EKX18SP subwoofer. I need more bass extension as well. All of the drivers I've looked at have a lower sensitivity rating. I don't know if that would give me less overall volume or not. What is the BEST driver that you would suggest I upgrade it with. Doesn't have to be a budget driver, looking for the best options.

Thanks Douglas for the suggestion. I replaced the woofers with the same SA subs and sounds so much better. Only downside is the grey cone and SA dust cover.

So I finally got a chance to air my upgraded subs out, I used 4 tops and two subs and still had to turn the subs down, my tops are crossed over @ 100hz and so are the subs, man this upgrade is the bomb. My go to tops are the zlx 15p bt and rcf hd 12 As' the 12 A is a sleeper I like sound quality and coupled with the zlx that can be a little harsh on the upper treble the rcf s' can smooth the frequency out once you get the right blend between the two pairs. Most happy with the butter smooth bass at any level now with no clipping. I can't thank you enough for the idea. Bless you bro. DJ Marvell

UPDATE! Used the setup for two outdoor events since the build, each one over 8 hours of continuous high level (but not unrealistic) use and they performed extremely well. I received many compliments on how crisp, clear, loud and deep they are. No issues with power, clipping, protection mode, hookup, rattling, port noise, nada. Amps are cool to the touch even playing dubstep and riddim at 80%+ volume for hours on end (ZLX-15Ps were much warmer but did not overload or have any issues as well). Very happy with the EV products and driver upgrade with Seismic Audio. I am still recommending it personally if it fits your needs etc.

Hey Doug, I just purchased 2 of the ETX 18SP subs last week. You are right, the boxes they come in are definitely made of some heavy duty cardboard and had to use a razor knife to get mine open too, lol. After getting them unboxed and set up, I used the two QSC k12 tops I have here at the house, (The rest of my QSC speakers are in storage) for my first quick test with both of the ETX18SP hooked up. I Gotta say, for a very brief test (Did not want to bother either of my neighbors for very long) I was impressed with the power they produce. Never turned em up past +10 db, but Man they can pump out some serious Thump! However, I can appreciate this video and your recommended Subwoofer upgrade, Cuz I too, Was a bit skeptical of the many reviews mentioning the speakers shutting down after extensive use at higher volume. I'll take a look at Seismic Audio New Madrid 18" drivers, That is definitely an upgrade I will consider. You seem very confident with your experience at large events that demand extended periods at high volumes, and I can appreciate that too. After seeing the magnet on these stock EV speakers in this video, I gotta say they do look thin and weak compared to other Subs I have seen. As for the pair of QSC KW181 Subs I use now, Those are fantastic subs that have truly stood the test of time and are stock from the factory. My entire PA system is active QSC speakers and subs. However, I was looking into expanding the bottom end of my PA system for the bigger outdoor events that seem to really soak up the low frequencies very quickly yand these EV subs caught my attention with the advertised 1800 watt I was presented with a great deal on a new set of these ETX18SP subs I just couldn't turn down. Only paid $2350 for a brand new set with full warranty, and also have an opportunity to purchase two more of these subs and 4 fitted covers for $2496 from the same seller. I think that is a good price considering I see them on Ebay for $1499 each, and the covers are $69 each. The invoice is for 2of the ETX18SP subs for $1150 each and 4 of the ETX18SP covers for $49 each, All brand new with free shipping and full warranty. I can't pass that kinda deal up. I don't like mismatching anything that goes up front for my PA system, but with an 1800 watt rating I can throw a black sheet over them. I'm gonna subscribe to your channel and keep an ear out for any more suggestions you might have. Thanks for the helpful information, I'm always digging around looking for ways to maximize my equipment to get the most out of it that I can

Good video have 4 of these subs used 3 times a week for 6 hours. Finally had a driver give out on my box that's 7 years old. Drivers are definitely not the best. My older subs had to re glue them years ago. But ordered 2 eminence drivers curious to test the difference

Finding this has really saved me some money. I blew 2 of my drivers on my ETX. Replacement cost around $346 but I live in Hawaii so shipping can only be sent Fedex 2 days at $375. Seismic saved me some money on the speaker but shipping is still $181 per speaker. So hopefully the $200 savings per speaker is worth it.

Hey man. I have 2 elx35p powered 3 way speakers and I feel the same way you do with the bass...i tried to find the seismic audio Madrid you suggested but in 15" size and couldn't they only come in 18. May i ask if you know if the Madrids come in 15" or only 18? Your description is very convincing and I really want to wake these guys up. Thank you in advance for your time.

I just bought one of these subs, trying to put together a bootleg movie theater for the family when i'm not working in the warehouse. 80' x 25' x 16' H I feel like the larger space requires more woofers or lower frequencies... What do you recommend?

anyone have the specs for the actual speaker in the ETX sub? The OEM? i want to compare as we plan to replace without having to cut into the cabinet.

Bro I agree the drivers in the ETX and the EKX models aren't very good for the quality of amps that come with these subs, the amps are underrated, I have the EKX 18 SP's and upgraded my drivers to the Lavoce' SAN 184.50 drivers and the sound is amazing bro. After the break in period the amps in these really shine and the bass is super punchy and lower being set at 100hz as well. I used the neodymium version of the Lavoces' and basically got the same result, a monster potable sub that I can use just about anywhere, anytime. Thanks for the info. Sincerely: DJ Marvell
