  • This film is probably one of the best I have ever watched when it comes to being action packed. I immediately felt the urge to do something badaxx after watching this lol.. As I observed how just 300 men were demolishing 100's upon 100's of army's like ants. As the thirst for battle and blood coursed through their vain's like a thirst they could never quench. They embraced death like it were a breath of fresh air. Leonidas the bravest of them all, leading his 300 men into the epic battle of the God King Xerxes. No surrender and No retreat was the Spartans way, the was law.

At the end when Leonidas told Ephialtes "May you live forever," it was probably a two fold jape. Spartan wives telling their soldier husbands "Come back with your shield, or on it" was legit. You could lose your own armor pieces, but if a Spartan lost his shield he was disgraced. Because the shield was the armor that protected your brothers, in the phalanx. When soldiers die they are carried on their own shields by their brothers. So she's saying, "come back with your shield, or die."
You're right that woman were still treated bad back then, but it's suspected Spartan women in particular were pretty highly honored compared to other nations, like being able to own property. Bearing children was just as important as serving as a soldier.
Not a whole lot of historical accuracy, but just enough to be one badass movie lol

Women weren't treated poorly then or any other time. That's a myth. there were times/areas where all people were treated poorly, or all poor were treated better, but women were never disproportionately mistreated. They were given no voice because they did not earn their voice. disgusting the 1st wave bytches who were whining for "equal rights" while telling men to go die in trenches in WW1 while they stayed home and enjoyed the niceties of the remaining societies. Indeed, they even shamed men who dared act like a woman and try to avoid going to his death into the war. now that's some gall. You are too big of a useless coward to go die in the war, but you are willing to go and shame any man who was too afraid to die for you. Meanwhile, while they're literally in the trenches and dying by the thousands daily, you have the gall to whine about not having an equal say in when society goes to war or not even though you don't go to war. Right. To this day, womyn are cowards who have been given, not earned, equal rights, and that is why they're mostly unappreciated children whining about every discomfort and entitlement. Rights are earned by paying their costs, but today only half the population pays that cost, and womyn are still fighting/resisting this obligation (to this same year, womyn are fighting against the supreme court/military from finally requiring both men and women to sign up for the draft at 18 instead of just men. They still want the entitlement without paying the cost.
Universal Suffrage was the biggest mistake of everyone democracy. People are born equal, but they never remain equal. Some are lazy losers. Some are selfish pricks. Some are slow. Some are strong. some are heroes. Some rise as they age, others barely thrive as they age. rights should only be equal among those who equally contribute to society. Unniversal Suffrage, sadly, was just the communist version of democacy, essentially welfare voting. Original suffrage was intended only for those who invest into the society, only those who contribute should have a voice, not everyone whose an anchor and just takes .

I have really mixed feelings about this movie. As a historian, I cannot help but point out the severe inaccuracies. But as a casual viewer I get really pumped and I love the nod to Ancient Greek art depicting the heroes in little to no armor. What I want to see is a movie of the Battle of Thermopylae from the 700 Thespians who refused to retreat with the rest of the Greeks and chose to die alongside the Spartans. These weren't professional warriors, they were common men like you and me who volunteered to come fight for the Persians and made the ultimate sacrifice. Also, I highly recommend the book The Hot Gates. It's an extremely realistic historical fiction book about the battle.

I think a lot of people miss the point. The man narrarating is the one Leonidas sent back to Sparta with his final message to the people. The message was the story itself. What we are viewing is an over exaggerated retelling of the events that took place intended to boost the peoples moral and pride and encourage them to fight. Thats why we see "black magic" and "colossal war beasts" we know what it really is but the people hearing the story back in sparta do not. So the depictions of everything is oversized and over exaggerated.
Its actually a really interesting way to tell a familiar story. But I definitely agree. A realistic movie would be awesome too. Or even better a long series.

Spartans, as part of their training, practices pushing down full trees with their shields. It would prepare them for potential charges like in 11:20
It wasn’t shown very well here, but in their phalanx you couldn’t escape being hit. One would aim their spear low and have their shield high, the one next to him would have his shield low and his spear high. If you blocked a spear another would hit your unprotected side. It was ingenious, especially in a tight corridor like that. There’s so much more that can be analyzed but I’ll leave it at that for now : )

Immortals were a thing, and they generally put their enemies at unease. In war, you give war cries, you grunt, you make noises of effort, you yell. Immortals were completely silent, unnerving.

Another I learned about this movie: The narrator was a spartan called Aristodemus. Him and another spartan called Eurytus were suffering from "eye disease" and were excused from the fight and sent home by Leonidas. Eurytus who was now blind, put his armor back on and demanded that he be lead back into battle by a helot where he died in combat. Aristodemus on the other hand was deemed a coward and was constantly humiliated (probably because a blind spartan chose to die in combat, while he still went home). At the Battle of Plataea, Aristodemus broke formation and fought like a suicidal berserker. He died having redeemed his name.

@Devin G In Ancient Sparta the women were actually really well respected for the most part because they were the mothers of the warriors, so even though they weren't seen as the same as men they were definitely treated with respect , especially the queen would've been seen as an equal :) A lot of the things Gorgo says in this movie (or in general the Spartans) are actually quotes from primary sources like Herodotus or Plutarch :p

what you were talking around the 25:05 marker it's historically accurate imo. The real Leonidas decided to stay behind with his hoplites to protect the other greek's retreat at the "Hot Gates". I once heard or read (can't remember exactly where) that the decision Leonidas made to sacrifice themselves for the other Greeks ended up molding our whole western life. Greek nations didn't fall to Persia. they won the war, ended up gathering and Democracy was born in the resulting civilization...all that thanks to Leonidas' 300 Hoplites sacrifice in the battle of Thermopylae.
    *edit:
I meant that Leonidas must have been someone who actually thought about a greater good for his people even if "his people" were other greek city-states
